If you're just winging spending $$$ on a super premium wettie is a waste. That $$$ is for stretch which is a big deal prone or surf but for winging isn't really necessary.

You clearly never tried high-quality wetsuits out of the "big names".

My Yamamoto and Yulex wetsuits are actually less stretchable than, say, my Rip Curls.

But this means they do not stretch in a wipeout and let water in by ballooning under pressure. They just fit to you.

And they are warmer, since stretching makes the neoprene thinner, less warm, plus the open cells in the regular neoprene lose their air and thus their insulation, and gain water, thus weight. Yamamoto is closed cells. I now use a 3/2 Isurus instead of my Rip Curl E-Bomb 4/3: Yamamoto #40 for the shoulders (flexier), but #39 for the body (warmer).

And their lightness when wet would be important for winging. The first time I climbed back up on my board with one, I though I had floaters, kind of propelled out of the water!

Yep, 100%. Try this familybrand. Yamamoto 40 in the arms and shoulders and Yamamoto 39 in the arms. Direct sales so no shops and wholesale profits. May be too expensive for Australia, just contact them.

Air can be 4C

You are pulling my (wetsuit) leg...
I had sessions with 17C water / 4C air before sunrise without problems with a (good) shorty.

Ever since I tried one of their custom wetsuits, I want nothing else but their wetsuit.

Expensive but worth every cent on 4th custom wetsuit over the last 13 years ( have both 4/3 and 2/3 shorty Max suits at the moment)

Yeah I have been tempted to get one in the past but couldn't get past the price.

I have a size/weight that isn't very standard (1m89 and 110kg) and since I tried the Seventh Waves custom, I want nothing else!! I've never felt as good as in their wetsuits, the Yamamoto neoprene is quite flexible, warm and dries super fast.
In addition, on my winter wetsuit (3/3) I have the removable hood depending on the winter period and that's really great!!!

Also, custom wetsuits last longer for us with non-standard sizes, as no parts are not overly stretched.

PS: The wetsuit repair shop next to my home has decided to make custom wetsuits, too bad they only use Yulex for now.
Regular neoprene absorbs 10 to 30% water, Yamamoto less than 0,3%, Yulex 2 to 5%
