Howdy. Don't want to hijack the thread but the relevant thread is no longer taking replies, due to time since last post, so I feel this is my best bet. Happy to receive a PM to keep thread clean.
I have a quick question for the more experienced. I'm a beginner and have only used a fairly bagged out, older model, Naish 6m wing so far. I'm only just starting to lift out of the water (for like a second before falling) but feel like my wing is making life more difficult than it needs to be for lack of power. I can get a new 2020 6m (only size available) Duotone Echo for just under $400 AUD. Do you think that's a worthwhile purchase at the price? I realise it's old tech but I figure people were using it successfully back then so should do the job now? ... Alternatively, I stick with my current wing for a while yet before investing in a newer model (possibly 5m Gong or similar) down the track. I don't really have the money to invest in the more expensive gear.
Any advice appreciated. Cheers
Hi, keep in mind that wing foiling is a "new" sport and the improvement from one year to another in terms of wing design is huge.
The difference between a model of any brand compared to the previous generation of the same model and brand is very noticeable
, in most cases night and day noticeable. As a general suggestion, try to get the latest wings of any brand.

Newer wings are much better. That's where most of progress is year-on-year. 2020 is positively ancient.
Here's video of the Unit v3 in action at home to start the year. super happy with the new version great upgrades on last year ??

Thanks Lee. What are the main differences to last year's version? Can you feel the weight increase in onshore wind & waves that the wing has more tendency to dip its tail when riding towards it?

This year I have gone 0.5 m smaller so 2.5 instead of 3, 3.5 instead of 4 & 4.5 instead of 5. this years seem to have same power as last years sizes but are lighter and more manoeuvrable as smaller. on the wave flagged out they are much more stable and fly perfectly off the front le handle ![]()
How is the mod3 after all this time? On the latest generic podcast the Ozone guy was discussing different materials and justifying why they landed on standard materials and i feel he described the canopy coatings making a difference as abit of pipe dream with the conditions they are subjected to.
Also on another post in the forum the idea of permanent canopy deformation being the cause of what we know as bagging, was challenged. He found the canopy dimensions for bagged wing was the same as fresh wing, indicating it was the loss of stiffness in the struts that leads to the bagged look
The mod3 is not just a coating it's a different weight cloth. I think it is the canopy material that stretches otherwise how can dinghy sails bag out when they are rigged on a stayed mast ? these people telling you otherwise about materials are probably just trying to sell their standard cloth wings ![]()
I have 3 MOD3 Units and the material is thicker as Lee pointed out. None have bagged at all in the time I've owned them (since initial release).
I have not done any scientific comparison, but the previous wings I've owned definitely bagged out and began to flutter at normal riding speeds - especially during tight upwind legs.
I have an older UNIT it is a formidable wing, very light, very balanced and has tons of power for the size and weight BUT that airport valve is in my opinion a load of rubbish as is the one pump system, I guess everyone else likes it or it's cost effective, the valve leaks around where it glues to the bladder, the silicon flap fails to seal and the deflate tab breaks off!![]()
Are we on the cusp of a new model unit, have any details leaked? When did the 2023 launch?
New one coming September I will do a review soon as I get them
