WINTER SERIES RACING ON THIS SUNDAY 7 June

With the easing of COVID19 restrictions, MBSC management has approved reopening of the bar and sailing.

This Sunday 07/06/20 we will be holding the scheduled Winter Series 1-3 (3 short races) and planning to kick of at 13:30. Rig up on the Club lawn from 12pm, please avoid parking in turning circle near boat ramp

The bar can serve a maximum of 100 people, light winds forecast but I hope to see some LT sailors on the startline. Probably will be too light to foil so the LT is the go...

Just after the start with Bjorn (169) in a good position

MBSC Winter Series #2 Results
Three short-course windward-leeward races were competed last Sunday after a bit of a wait for the breeze to kick in. For a long time early in the afternoon it looked like the only that would be moving on the water would be the juniors on the club LTs with paddles, but patience paid off and the first race in 3-8 knots started at about 2:30pm.

There were some challenges on the course, with a tightly packed cruising yacht fleet causing some interesting crosses and brave calls. The wind also constantly clocked around to the north-west during the afternoon, leaving those that went long left on the beat sometimes regretting it. Similarly those that didn't wear a wetsuit might also have regretted their decision by the end of the day.

The starts were tight and the highly favored boat end caused a few bumps and pushing between the fleet of seven sailors. Pumping was also essential to keep position on the downwind legs and Bjorn's vocal encouragement and audible flapping of his sail only drove others to pump harder!

Results:

Race 1
1. Mark 2. Michael 3. Bjorn
Race 2
1. Mark 2. Bjorn 3. Michael
Race 3
1. Michael 2. Bjorn 3. Mark

Well done to Sam, David, David and Noel for getting out on the course, and Greg for moral support from the upstairs bar. Unfortunately the foilers didn't have enough wind to get out on the course.

Editors comment: "Foiling is not proving the light wind panacea that it is being promoted as, unfortunately, maybe the technology is needing more development by innovative board/foil designers and sailmakers. Foiling is superb and tops however, sadly, the foilers seem to spend a lot of time rigging/tuning (like foiling Moth racers) and less sailing on any given race regatta day. Will this years race gear be superseded soon for the new light wind machines being developed ? Lets see what the new foiling gear for 2022 brings !"

Thankyou also to the MBSC volunteers on the start and rescue boat.

The next MBSC winter series race is scheduled for the 30th August. This is preceded by the club AGM, so please turn up early (11:30) and support the management of your club.Heading up the first beat in Winters Series #2, Race 3

Great to see the LTs having a great time out there during the winter series Richard. It's certainly the forte of the LT to be able to race in sub 8 knots.

yes, windfoiling does require a certain amount of wind to get up and foiling. We can indeed float around the course in sub 8 knots as the LTs do, albeit a little slower, but it's not really what we're about.

With a lot of promising youngsters getting into windfoiling, the WA race foilers are looking forward to a great and progressive season, hopefully with plenty of racing at MBSC and at other venues around the state. Looking forward to the next winter series race, hopefully with a bit more wind.
See you out there.

Yes wishing you more wind for next time. I actually did not sail as I had other commitments that day so well done if you did. See you out there next time and with more wind and more foilers for sure.

Clive Swanson shows textbook light wind footwork at the start

MBSC Winter Series Results 30th August
Seven competitors took to the water in very light conditions. The 1st race was technically won by Greg Willmott as the first three rounded the top mark to starboard whereas Greg rounded it to port as required. HOWEVER - Greg politely declined to lodge a formal protest and had to settle with a moral victory. He decided not to protest as it would not have changed overall results particularly as he came 7th in the last race. Bjorn had an interesting start in the second race as he was about 10m over the line with a puzzled look when hooter sounded for the start. Bjorn "was it me"?

Well done to David Green (1st), Clive Swanson (2nd) and Bjorn Hagen (3rd). Also completing were Sam, David, Greg and Noel.

Cheryl Draper has four new windsurfer learners coming through the club's "Learn to Windsurf" course, who we hope to see out racing before too long. If you know of anyone who wants to learn to windsurf, please direct them to have a look at the courses available here. WINDSURFER WORLDS and WA State Titles UPDATE

This is the thrill of one design racing but nevertheless hearkening to the sensations, excitement and drama of the MBSC LT racing in the summer seabreezes.
The Windsurfer WA States will quite possibly be like this.

MBSC WINDSURFER LT CREW - LAST BUSY-BEE DATE IS THIS SUNDAY
SUNDAY 20th SEPT 8am - 12pm

The first weekend busy-bee has been and gone, and being a Saturday it wasn't a huge turnout. We did get a lot done but there is still a huge list to work through. If you can spare some time this Sunday morning, please come down to the club and pick something from Fiona's task list to work on. The free beer afterwards always tastes better when you've put in the hard yards! FOILERS WELCOME TOO !

With Opening Day only weeks away the Management Committee are hoping for solid turn outs of all fleets over the 2 scheduled days so that we can catch up on where things were left prior to the premature ending of our summer season and also give the Club a little bit of sparkle for the new season 2021.

We have a range of tasks both on water with marks, on the pen complex and finger jetty and also across our grounds and buildings.

As per last year a list of jobs will be available for you upon arrival to individually select so that each members skill set can be best utilised and accommodated.

Those with green thumbs are encouraged to bring their gardening equipment/ brooms, chainsaws to help speed up the process of tidying the greenery around the club.

Attendance at one of these sessions for the entire 8am - 12 noon shift ensures that your volunteer levy for the coming season will be automatically released prior to season 2021 commencing. For those members who are still wishing to complete their volunteering contribution for release of their 2020 levy, we are also offering an amnesty to take part in one of these busy bee's which aligns with our extension of the club cards being active up to the start of the season.

As always the Bay will be putting on a sausage sizzle and beverages at 12 noon sharp to show our appreciation to all those committed to doing their bit to keep our Club looking sharp for Summer 2021!!!

On behalf of the management committee we look forward to seeing you on either of the days listed or if those dates don't suit you can always contact the office after the busy-bee's have been held as a list will be available of items requiring attention that can be done adhoc at your convenience to give you the sign off you need to be eligible for the release of the volunteer levy.

Best regards and we look forward to hosting successful Busy Bee's with you all in light of the huge achievements accomplished last year with the fabulous turn-out of The Bay members!!!

Cheers

MBSC WINTER SERIES - FINAL DAY THIS SUNDAY

Hi everyone, this Sunday is the final race-day in the MBSC winter series for 2020. The Class Captain won't be able to make it, but it looks like it will be a good breeze for the short-course races. A westerly breeze will give very flat water and a few new challenges as the usual patterns of a favored side might not be there.

Briefing at 1pm as always. Can someone please email the Class Captain (michaelingram71@gmail.com) a summary of who wins this month's sheep-station and any commentary on the shenanigans out on the water? Pics or it didn't happen.

(Apologies for the lack of pictures and colour, but it's been a busy week and the Class Captain has run out of time!)

MBSC Opening Day Results
(by Class Captain, Michael Ingram)
Welcome to what will hopefully be a COVID-free summer of consistent sea-breezes!
Mounts Bay Sailing Club's opening day race (Basil Wright Memorial Trophy) was a bit of a shock to the system, with a cold and strong southerly building through the afternoon to a consistent 20 knots, gusting to 25.

The Club's new rescue boat was put to work bringing a few tired and cold sailors back to shore, and keeping a close eye on some visiting Cherubs and Javelins which seemed to be more comfortable lying on their side in the river as obstacles for the Windsurfer fleet.

15 names went onto the sign-on sheet, but only 9 completed the course for a score. The usual strong wind specialists led the fleet and I think almost everyone opted for reaching on the downwind legs as a dead-downwind run was a bit crazy. My own best speed for the day was 20.5 knots on one of those reaches down to Quarry.

Well done to everyone who persevered around the course, and to the wind-foilers who probably regretted rigging anything larger than a 5m sail.

This Sunday is looking to be a bit more controlled, with breeze in the mid-low teens.

Results;
1. Kelvin Ussher 2. Gordon Salvage 3. Ian Lane

MBSC results will from now on also be posted here

topyacht.net.au/results/mbsc/2020/otb/index.htm

There are a few glitches in this first results posting - we'll get them fixed!

MBSC Club Championship Race 1 ResultsJust like the weekend before, a fresh sea-breeze went a bit nuclear just after the start! 10 sailors came off the start line and it was a reasonably competitive beat up to the first mark before a quick reach across to Addison on the South Perth side of the river. That's where it all got a bit crazy as the next beat up to Robins spread out the fleet. The wind was 20+ knots and a steep chop was a challenge for many.

The next legs were a downwind reaching blast, across to Nedlands, then Anderson, and then Quarry. Greg was having too much fun and decided to go all the way into Pelican Point carpark to show off his carve gybing skills on the LT, whilst the rest of us got some air-time over power-boat wakes on some scary-fast (for a Wally) long broad reaches back down the river. Footstraps - who needs them......

By the this time there were quite a few retirements and the course was shortened with the hope of getting some more finishers for the handicap results. Well done to David Green who popped back in to the beach at MBSC to check on which mark he should be sailing to next, and then re-launching to finish the race, and Noel Lacey who just kept on going and going. Heading off the wind in 22 knots isn't so much of a problem for Noel now!

The outcome from a downwind start, before the Bear attacked

MBSC Short-course races 1-3
Sunday was a flukey day, with a forecast light seabreeze flipping around to the North-East, and swinging to North-west for short periods. Race 1 was a bit of a lottery with the breeze, but Richard seemed to like it and was up with the front of the fleet of 10 for the top mark, led by Peter. Mark and Michael managed to pump their way energetically neck and neck all the way down the run to the finish for a dead-even first place finish. Both were so tired that a gentleman's agreement was implemented for the next race - no aggressive pumping!

Race 2 was started through a downwind start line as the southerly sea-breeze arrived just in time. This made for the most compressed first mark rounding we've had for a long time, followed by a really nice beat to the finish in moderate breeze and very flat water. Mark was feeling the pressure and gave up second place to Peter with only 20m to go.

Race 3's run down to the first mark was quite eventful, with Don't Poke The Bear (Dave Mann's Sharpie) creating havoc as they came up through the fleet of windsurfers. Dave was in a bearish mood, and this time he was doing the poking. He did have right of way and maybe we'll have a racing rules of sailing day as a theme one afternoon? Fortunately no harm done.....
Clive won that race by gambling and going west into the bay, taking everyone else by surprise when he crossed ahead of second place by 30m.

Overall results: 1. Michael Ingram, 2. Mark Taylor, 3. Clive Swanson

Thankyou also to East Fremantle Yacht Club for hosting an Windsurfer LT invitation race series on Saturday afternoon. 10 sailors competed in three short races, which like Sunday had a first race lottery followed by two more with a steady sea-breeze. The outgoing current made for a new challenge, but Blackwall Reach was good fun to sail in and the racing was competitive.Noel looking pretty happy to be just ahead of StephenSneaky Pete pinching up to cross the finish line, whilst meanwhile somewhere out of frame, Mark quietly curses2020 Windsurfer LT sail colours now available from Surf Sail Australia. Fast improving Noel Lacey is starting to hit his LT straps

What looked like a good solid southwesterly turned into a light and flukey race for the 13 LT starters. Welcome back to the fleet Carl Neirynck after a long absence in Europe. Carl is back here in training for the States is showing a lot of class and near light speed with his excellent technique which leaves others well behind. He used to give tips and advice to many back in the day including Tom Luedecke and Anders Bringdal. Carl is the professor as he came 7th in the Light Heavies in the 1984 Perth worlds, (Bruce Wylie won, Bobby Wilmot second, Anders Bringdal third Patrick Troell 4th..Matt Schweitzer 5th..). He has gazelle like style and brilliant speed on the board which is a joy to behold.

Carl destroyed the fleet and led by a long way but unfortunately went the wrong wrong way (twice!) and ended up with a DSQ. Phil "Bugs" Smith also sailed well but made the mistake of following Carl and also scored a DSQ

The eventual winner was foiling moth gun Lloyd Edmunds followed closely by Bjorn and Clive. We are seeing many foiling moth sailors making the move to the Windsurfer Class which is really encouraging and exciting.

Bjorn now holds a slim lead at the top of the leaderboard in the race for the 2020/2021 MBSC Windsurfer LT Championships

Thanks to the volunteer MBSC starter and rescue teams

Briefing 1pm, starts 2pmRESULTS FOR CLUB RACE SUNDAY 6 December

A red hot 20-23 knot southwester greeted the 13 strong fleet on Sunday for the club race. After a false start general recall the fleet spread out around the course struggling at times with the solid SW bullets. Mark and Clive battled it out at the front of the pack while the others searched for Foam (55). Mark eventually prevailed to take the winners pennant and ring the bell in the bar.
