Thanks to everyone who came down for the AGM. The was some great discussion on the future of WWA and how we can better engage with everyone in the windsurfing community and not just the competitive windsurfers. Minutes will be posted once they are available.
The key focus points for the coming season are:
- Juniors
- Non Competitive windsurfers
- Female Windsurfers
- Continuing to run great events
Last season we did not many events run in the Perth area. If you have an idea for an event, be it competitive or just a social windsurfing, please drop us a line and we will see how we can assist your dream to become a reality.
I have always thought a downwind race from point walter to the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club (PDSC) on Hacket Drive could be fun. :)

Can you do 500 stretchy? make it 600 for a record. Katy could come over and laugh or join in.
Get a day going to see how far we can all sail in total, raise some money , awareness about windsurfing. Paper, TV, FB, Twitter etc.

Put some bouys out, couple of km apart.
Ive got an idea.... Drag racing!!! on any gear, one on one two guys beach start, race 500m to between 2 bouys get timed, then the next two go and so on. Best time of the day wins, challenge a mate or nemesis to a run. I want starting lights
not flags

I meant the usual gps style, but set up a special event hosted on KA72. Best 500m time over the weekend at that spot wins.

I recall WWA ran an hour of power a couple of years ago down in Mandurah. That was a great event.
All good ideas and I was always a fan for the marathon out to the scientific platform and back.
If you are able to get together a team of keen like-minded souls together there is a good chance your idea could become an event. That said the calendar is getting full so you need to get in quick. Drop an email to info@windsurfingwa.org.au
The Bridge to Bridge windsurfing race on the river was fun. It would certainly showcase windsurfing. Primarily a longboard race (Windsurfer LT, Raceboard, Div 1, Div 2, SUPs with sails as well) but now maybe foils could also sail the course navigating as needed from Freo (or vice versa depending on wind direction) to the finish in Perth. No kites allowed. This would be a great event for all entrants (family and junior participation would be great: when I sailed it last in 1983 I was 18) and you could even have a SUP paddle event as well. It might have the effect of creating a market for some of the older 1980s long boards.
I like the idea of a GPS event but handicapped to encourage the use of vintage boards. Maybe an hour of power event at Coodanup but you get an extra knot for every 5 years of board age.
Yes we did some formula racing there in the past.
But it is quite shallow 70-80cm many places. The muddy bottom was good if the 70cm formula fins was hitting.
Think we went out from that beach where the small sailing cats renting out from.
I can't exactly remember the wind direction. But do remember it was ok, might even had been easterly wind?
Not sure how good it would be in a normal sea breeze direction though
We've sailed there on slalom gear when its been easterly and its been quite good. We rigged right next to the catamarans. There wouldnt be a lot of room to park and rig for a full fleet of racers though i dont think.
It would be a good spectacle though, and would be a good way to promote windsurfing in WA as there are usually a lot of people walking or eating in the area. :)
Definitely the Bridge to Bridge sounds like a brilliant idea
Appealing to Sups, foils, long boards, formula and maybe possible on big slalom gear on the right day
Big thumbs up from me, would be very keen to have a crack at it on the foil

this is one of the plans for the coming summer. If you want to really push your racing skills, RPYC is running training over winter for their Bic Techno juniors who are planning to go to Nationals in Hobart over summer (December I think).

This is always a tricky one. What should be the delineator between Pros, Open and everyone else? As we are all getting old and there are many super skilled masters and grandmasters, age brackets don't really work. The aim of the weekend warrior fleet is to have a fleet of intermediate sailors which covers older sailors and middle of road sailors - C Grade I guess.
I know its very tricky. I feel your pain there...
The trouble is, people entered who had been competing for many years, and they entered open, masters and 'weekend warrior'
The vibe should be for those who have 'never entered anything of significance more than twice' (?)
eg: if you have done the triple crown, no. You've entered 3 State rounds just last year.
if you entered LOC waves in Open and did top 10, no way.
If you are in top 10 in GPSTC, well hmmmmmm
I think it should comedown to organisers deciding who has 'too much experience' and their decision is final. I know thats not definitive, but its to encourage those who are sh!t enough to be bit scared of looking dumb. There is many of us hahahaa
But if organisers bumped me out of 'weekend warrior' despite my crap sailing, well too bad for me and now I have to go open. Take it as a compliment.

We already have an awesome inclusive event for all skill levels that is very well run in the Simmer Slalom Series. If you are a weekend warrior you will be in the 2nd or 3rd race with all the other weekend warriors after the first placing race. If you think you don't you have the skill level for this competiton you are wrong, come down for an AWESOME day of fun social racing with people of all skill levels, genders and ages. Great job WWA, Stu and the Safety Bay Yacht Club crew.

Have to agree the Simmer Slalom series this season was a fantastic event for windsurfers of all levels!
As a weekend warrior (at best!) who recently returned to windsurfing after a long break I had a great time mixing it with other windsurfers at a similar level.
It is a great series that caters for and welcomes everyone. Thanks to the organisers a great event, looking forward to next season
Bridge to bridge, point Walter downwind race, Busso marathon, Busso to Perth marathon. All great ideas, sign me up!
maybe have a "keyboard warriors" class at all events.
no experience required. In fact you dont even have to sail in the event or bring any gear.
A computer , mouse and keyboard can be hired on the day.
pete can sail but he worries about his tinfoil hat blowing off in strong winds.

So do WWA have any interest in doing it again? As far as I can tell, there is no need for any on-site organisation, the event just needs to be set up on KA72. Wouldn't necessarily need to be 1hr either, could also be 500m, Nautical Mile or something else.
I think doing it over a weekend within a locality (rather that over a month Aus wide) would improve the social element to the event. Maybe its possible to incorporate both.
Plus: No boats, marker buoys, on site registration, sail numbers required.
Minus: internet setup required, need a GPS, need shallow water weed fins, not everyone's cup of tea
