Why all the thumbs down for the Hardster?

I can guess where it was. If I am wrong I'd not be far off

Plenty of good spots out there but I won't share the love.

Here's a photo from Thursday @ one of my secret spots.

This photo doesn't do the epicness of the day any justice.

went there exactly a year ago... conditions were very similar. Sadly couldn't make it this year... but I am hoping to be back next year...

BTW... this place ain't so secret anymore. There is a multi page article in the October edition of Surfer magazine. It features Ocky and a bunch of mates. Apparently they went there to shoot a Billabong video...

I was relatively unknown overseas as far as surfing is concerned. Even in windsurfing there are still plenty of people that don't know about it.

are you for real! what about the billabong pro movie made around 96/97

everyone thats interested in serious wave riding knows about it
its more than a coincidence that after school hols 80% of sailer's there are euro's
.
Its the location, isolation and fear of sharks that keep most away plus most shots are when its mast high and smoking.

Considering most people in Europe overseas and over east(didnt need to but thought i would slip that in) only get to sail half mast waves breaking over a nice soft sandy bottom Gnaraloo is quite a intimidating place, thats what keeps the crowd down

A lot of people want a holiday with better accommodation and a place to escape from the wind after sailing
stick a hotel there and then tell me nobody knows about it!

I just spent two weeks up there, untill the school hols.On the way back i saw three cars loaded with gear at the servo in canarvon. Then i saw at least twenty cars with windsurf kit between there and Gero.
With those sorts of crowds you need a card system or something
Great place, great wave but it's f@#ked with more than 15 on the water.

You think this year is bad. Just found out Jem Hall is doing an "Extreme" Wave clinic up there next year (Oct 2010).

Amen to that!

Keep in mind that this photo was from a day being touted as "swell of the year". The sort of day that had Scotty McKercher drove up for the day to experience. Some calling it the best in the last 6 years.

It's rare to get a swell that big and the necessary wind. The planets aligned for a couple of days, and it was on.

Rest of the time the wave has a sloppy shoulder, maybe a few head high sets, closes out, and sometimes no waves at all. And when that happens there's not enough waves to go around ... folks start dropping in etc etc.

It's a hardcore place with almost guaranteed equipment & body damage on reefs & rocks. Due to the low tides, probably more board fins than reef on the ocean floor!

No offence... but I think running a wave clinic there is probably the dumbest idea I have ever heard off.

The place is overcrowded as it is... the last thing it needs is a wave clinic.

I actually wonder what they will do for safety? The nearest hospital is Carnarvon and last I checked they don't have a rescue chopper. It's an ambulance that will come out there...

I remember last year someone getting bitten by a brown snake and driving himself to the hospital...

Sorry Wrong Guy. It is actually Guy Cribb not Jem Hall. This was in the INtuition Windsurfing Newsletter September 09:

So let me get this right;

The modestly named "Extreme Surf Gods" are going to teach punters how to be "totally safe in radical conditions".

Maybe the guy in Laurie's post "Guess the damage" should have signed up with the Gods!

I think the ambulance from Carnarvon will only come part way (until the road is too rough for them) so someone has to talke the injured/deceased person to meet the ambo.

Not a place for learning ;-) IMHO

I'm guessing it would not be for pure wave newbies,it would be an advanced cinic. I still disagree with it, aussies will book different weeks so it will make it crowded for more than just the week in question.

who's for a petition?

I just got back from Gnaraloo after my first visit for 22 years! Great sailing, sets up to 3/4 mast and wind every day. It really is a super wave but the number of sails / kites is going to be an issue in to the future. Depending on respect, behaviour, number of sets etc, between 10 and 20 seemed good, but some times there were 25 and up out and behavior went to poop and it was not so much fun.

Talking to a guy who is providing consulting to the station owners there is an interest in going upmarket with accomodation options at 3 mile (which would be good for me as a family guy) , but my feeling was they dont really value there core market of surf lovers, and havnt thought about the problem of crowding at peak times.

I would have thought surf clinics etc are a good idea to do at the quiet times when both the break and site are under utilised.

I had a ball and thought that the owners are generally doing a pretty damm good job

Yeah but u can't run a windsurf clinic when it is quiet: it is quiet because there is no wind. There is 2 months up there when it goes off, and they are running it right then... right when a lot of ppl will want to be there
