Just spoke to someone in Pozo. Apparrently it's looking pretty grim. Dead flat, no wind.

Not surprisingly, my predictions were off the ball. Anyone claiming the predictions win?
I was away Fri-Sun, so guess the wind picked up as Campello got a 10 for a 2F.

Back to the weather, I guess that low was sitting further south at the start of the competition and that created the easterly wind off Africa bring the heat and haze.
I didnt realise the trade winds only blew at low altitude, below 500/1000m. I'm aware the wind generally blows different strengths and directions with height, but didnt realise the trades were so low.
So you can have a NE trade at Pozo and E wind higher up.
The Canaries sit in the Atlantic which is 20-22c, keeping the temperature at a steady temperature. Compare to the same latitude in Africa, 40c+.
If there is a hot easterly, then that would stop the warm rising off the Canaries I would guess, so at sea level the temperature goes up more than usual.

Africa is 140 miles away, but the easterly winds keep their heat for some distance.
Screenshot from when there is a low to the south east of the CI, where that low pressure might have been at the start of the competition. Its only a data model, but they must get their data to model from somewhere.

Camp got a 10 for a PF. What was the wind over the days of the competition? Poor waves it seemed.
Glad they were able to compete over so many days and really enjoyed the show.
Nice to see women doing nice late forwards!

I watched most of it and the waves were best when the tide was on the push. There did have a small ground swell early in the week and then again at the end. But the Pozo wave size is also wind-dependent and the hot weather held back the 'normal' nukin wind strength on several days.

On the least-windy day, Koster was seen on his 5.3m rig, but most sailors only had 4.7 as their biggest, and there were plenty of 4.5s and 4.2s on show for the 'light wind' days.
Yesterday, Sunday, sail sizes were as small as 3.0 but with big guys on 4m rigs. The waves look OK on the PWA site pictures, but it was a jump event more than a wave riding one. Short-period wind swell.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Any idea on actual wind speed and wind meter history by chance?

Also, jump height seemed odd to inaccurate? Koster's seemed higher and yet others went over 8m??

You can scroll left to get previous days.

ps. Probably meaningless if the anemometer is on top of Cutre's shop in town.

From the webcam today I guess they are on 4.5/5m sails, maybe smaller. When the anemometer says 17knots and they wobble out to past centre screen then get planing. All seem to be planing on the outside. 21 knots they get planing a little sooner.
Maybe the meter isnt reflective of wind on the actual water, like a lot arent.

From the webcam, 10:15 this morning it was 19 knots and NE 36 degrees. Now, 14:25, still 19 knots and the direction is NE 44 degrees. They start planing a lot sooner. Either that or the 'B' sailed this morning and now its the 'A' team.
