Hoop is 0.6mm thick.
Gestalt, where do you get your 0.6mm veneer and carbon tape from?
carbon tape was from sanded. can highly recommend those guys.
veneer comes from Top Veneer in Townsville.
you could also try Bamboo Australia in Eumundi for bamboo veneer.
Today I did a test run with a tinted resin pour. First attempt didn't work as I was hoping. 2nd attempt is more what im chasing but a bit too candy striped.
I was hoping the colours would pop more.
The resin tint is not easy to do. Might try acrylic before taking things further.

Latest update.
I've ordered a bunch of different coloured green paints from mtn.
I think the issue with the test graphics are a combination of the white sealed substrate and open weave volan. Both leaving the greens looking washed out and pastel.
With tints on surfboards the resin soaks into the foam which makes the colours pop more. The qcels means that's not possible with an eps board. Next time I try this I'll try a more sympathetic colour tint with the q cel coat to see what happens.
to test changing the substrate colour I'm going to do another 3 or 4 test panels over different coloured substrates and see what that looks like. if it doesn't work the I'll just spray the board and move on.
just buy some epoxy resin pigments and laminate with them. Make up a bunch of colours and go.
No you have sealed the blank with Qcel, the paints will just weaken the bond and the deck will delam more easily. Also many paint brands have chemicals which react with epoxy. It isnt worth it.
yeah i agree and tried that.
i wasn't happy with what the tint looked like.

This is a paint squeegee i did a in 2015 on the deck, and did just tints on the bottom. it was poly tho. u need to use white paint where u want white bits on the board.
Look at Mark Richards instagram from some time ago for lots of paint squeegee stuff.

thx bertie. look great.
that's the idea i was going for. inspired by the mark richards stuff and also van straalen.
i was hoping to do it with tinted resin but the colours are significantly different. i am guessing because the foam is sealed and i sealed it with white tinted qcel. on unsealed foam i get the bold colours.
the example above i used 3 greens and a white and poured it onto the glass then squeegeed. the colours look pastel. the darker green for example in the pot is very very dark.
i'm going to give the resin tint one more go. feel like maybe i just need to tweak the technique.
Yeah resin tints and pigments need a bit of practice to work. generally you will want the pigments to get the opaque deep colours. tints are just too see through and light.
Some extra paint arrived during the week so I tested different green backgrounds to the coloured resins.
Think I am good to go..

What else is going on the rail ?
on your veneer, did you use any special epoxy or extra coating
I have added veneer on the nose and have plans for several other areas.
from here there will be 2 layers 6oz on the deck and 1 layer on the bottom.
i used normal epoxy for everything so far. qcel, carbon & veneer. strength to cost veneer is pretty hard to beat. just hard to use near rails without vac bag.
Got the tail painted white and the bottom fluoro green. But I ran out of green so need to order more.

yup. looking forward to it. a couple of weeks to go. almost there. ordering footstraps and stuff at the moment and have another fin coming
I'm wondering how the board compares to a 135L hypernut (4 in 1), for rocker etc.
Impressive effort by the way.

Hey I missed your post.
I'm going to do a 4in1 board for sure. This board was a test to see how big a waveboard could be and still feel like a short board. I kept it narrower. But I have no real issue with width in wave boards. My sups are all wider.
I've got a fanatic prowave I'll be testing this board against. slightly less volume but a lot more width. Once I finish this board I've got 2 more lined up then I'll do a 4in1. By then I should have some hours on this board so will be more informed.
Also wanted to say. I can't sup an 135lt board. It's too small for my weight which is why this is a windsurfer. When I do a 4in1 it will be bigger.
Gestalt, I'm thinking about something basically identical to this idea, but didnt realise local shapers still made sailboards.
Could I trouble you to connect me to your shaper friend?

hi Matt,
i sent you a pm. you are more than welcome to try my board as well. i was going to see if the rocker works then get some other people to have a go.
a bit of an update.
bottom layer of glass is laminated.
my head almost exploded doing the resin job. initially was going to do an inlay deck so taped up the board for cut lap rails. i struggled with the rails. the cloth started to fall apart and i couldn;t get the resin all the way around easily. add to that 2 colours of resin.
i mixed up both batches of coloured resin and only added the hardener when ready to laminate. really happy it's done and liking how it turned out. tonight i'll cut the laps.

time for an update.
have been on holidays for the last few days so churning through the board build.
have finished the bottom layup which ended up being 6oz volan + 4oz glass. i tried to get away with just the volan but it felt a little spongey.
deck layup is currently 6oz over 6oz patches to the nose, feet and mast track. i have one more layer of 6oz to do tonight and will decide after that if i'll finish with a layer of 4oz to the feet/mast area.
should have eva pads and footstraps in the post soon.
today am off to to pick up 2 pac and intergrip for the finish coats.
Great to make progress.
So keen to see how it works, to plane, catch waves and most importantly to wave riding ability in a range of conditions.

Yeah. Im keen to find out too. ![]()
Cut fin boxes this morning and sanded rail laps from 4oz. All sanding on the board has been done by hand.
Also went to shapers yesterday to pickup a set of dvs sidebites for the board.

so i'm on the phone to a mate working out the next meet up and i notice smoke billowing out of my garage window.....
oh... the left over pot of resin is in melt down..... ![]()
garage is ok thankfully.
i managed to get it outside and under a hose.
