Dear Surf-Community!

I'm a 24 years old Austrian girl coming in few weeks to Adelaide and I have a few questions - hoping to get some answers.

First of all: used surfstuff

I will not take my surfstuff from europe to australia. Further on I have to look for stuff in SA. Where to buy best used stuff (cheap and it has not to be the newest one!). I have already seen there are a few offers at ebay.
Does there exists other ways to get used stuff? I'm not sure if it is better to rent stuff?? (Because of the difficulties to get a long stay visa I'll stay firstly only 3 months at my uncles house in Adelaide)

Next: surfspots in/around Adelaide

How is about surfspots IN and AROUND adelaide? Because I will not have money to buy a car/camper I have to look how far it is to the next possible position to surf and how to come there. Also an interest of me: does there exists schools to store stuff?

Further on: wind conditions

In Austria we look for wind forecasts under www.windfinder.com Is that page a relevant page for you in Australia or does there exists better resources?
How often is there wind >4 Beaufort?

Also: waves
Because I'm not used to the waves (Austria = an inland = no ocean = no waves where are beginners spots to start with waves?
I have already surfed (windsurfing) with 0,5 meters high waves in Italy and started surfing (surfing) last year in Brazil with 0,5-1 meters high waves.

Last question:
Possible to surf (only surfing) in Adelaide-town?

So much questions.. I know, but I want to surf in SA -> so help me please!!!!!!! :-)

Kind regards from Austria and hang loose, Luise

Luise,

Adelaide is a great place to windsurf and Surf, but a car wold be a good thing to have as some of the spots are 50-60kms apart.

We have a few bits and pieces you could use, Boom, some spare SDM masts etc, maybe even a board or two, we could even give you a lift down the coast every now and again depending on where you liv in Adelaide

Adelaide has a very active windsurfing community, about 30 - 40 strong, with wave sailing, bump and jump and slalom being the most popular forms. We sail in the sea at places like Seaford Reef, Sellicks beach Middletone beach (day st) Hindmarsh Island and Seacliff (google map it) - There are also other spots around the state such as Robe and Beachport, we are spoilt for choice really.

To get an idea of the best wind forcasts before you arrive check out www.bom.gov.au , click on SA and coastal farecasts, usually a good gauge of the wind conditions.

We only have one retail outlet in SA, www.onboard.com.au but there is a group that have an online shop, www.boardonline.com.au

Look me up when you get in and we can try and hook you up with some gear and go for a sail.

PS: There is a demo day coming up early December that most of the SA crew will be attending, not sure of venue, but could be Goolwa lake, keep an eye out for that one, lots of new stuff to try out :)

Have I missed anything guys?

Do they still run the "Summer Surf Bus" to the south coast? That could be an answer for the surfing (as opposed to windsurfing) side of it if lack of car is an issue.

Hi Luise,
Depending on how much you expect to windsurf, you may find it cost effective to hire some gear.
If you're planning on sailing fairly frequently then you'd be better to buy something on the second hand market and sell it when you're leaving.

What gear do you use back in Austria? Are you looking for something similar?

Hello everybody!

Thanks a lot for your replies! :-)

First of all:
Yes, I'm a windsurfer! But I also want to start surfing. (I just tried last year in Brazil). In English it's a little bit confusing with the word "surfing" (In German you have two words so you can differentiate it better.) How do you differentiate it? WINDsurfing and surfing ...Difficult

@sharkbiscuit (cool nick :-D)
I will need both: windsurfing and surfing stuff. The last is easier to find and buy. So thats not the big problem. But getting the hole equipment for windsurfing...

@Boardonline

Of course I'm planning to surf as most as possible, because in Austria - in my homecity Graz I couldn't surf a lot in the last few years (next "good" surfspot is two hours by car and I didn't have one) and now I want to get better and to surf so much until I don't have any more power.
My stuff in Austria consists of F2 style 260 with 109 liters (2004) and JP Freestyle-Wave with 82 liters(2001). But mostly I surfed the bigger one. Now I have sold it, because I want to start with little boards and because I'm not in Austria for 6-12 months.
And sails I have mostly used my Neilpryde Raf Jet with 5,9m² and NP Zone with 5,0m², rarely my NP zone with 4,1m².
I'm thinking over it to take my sails (5,0 and 4,1) and maybe my boom to Australia - but firstly I have to check how much that would cost with Air New Zealand.

My problem will be - how to come to the beaches!? I don't know if I can use my uncles car - I rarely know him at the moment.
Actually I wanted to work in Australia and then it wouldn't be a problem to buy stuff and a car! But because of the difficulties to get a longstay visa and further on a job or working experience I just can visit Australia and New Zealand and look there hopefully for a job through working experiences.

@tonto

"Summer Surf Bus" - does it exists? Where could I find them? It sounds good. Is it only for surfers or also for windsurfers?

And last but not least @divaldo

THANKS a lot for your good tipps! That helps me a lot!
That would be very great and nice from you if you can take me to the spots!! Naturally I will share the fare with you!
I don't know if it helps you. I'll live in "Klemzig" directly in Adelaide. At this moment I don't have a "feeling" for the size of Adelaide (or Australia). But I have heard and read a few thinks that it should be very big and long distances (Not like in Austria were you can drive through the country in 8 hours by car ). So I hope it is possible to get around in Adelaide in one/two hours?!

Your windsurfing community in Adelaide is closed? Are you meeting together or other things? Because of the unpopularity of windsurfing in Austria we have not really such a community! :-( What a pity!

I'm arriving on 5th of November then I will look for you and further on for surf trips! :-)

Thank you guys!

Hang loose, Luise

Hopefully to meet some of you!

I can't believe no-one tried to hit on you with an opening line like that!

(although Divaldo's offers seem a bit 'friendly')

Hi Luise

Klemzig is a nice central suburb. It is connected via the "O-bahn", which gets you into the city in 10 minutes. From the city, you catch other buses that get you to the beaches. For timetables, study this website:

www.adelaidemetro.com.au/

timetables.adelaidemetro.com.au/ttsearch.php?action=search&searchtext=klemzig&js=1

Don't get a car if you are only staying here three months (save your money).

The closet surfing would be "North Haven". It is about 30 minutes by bus from Klemzig.

It's only small surf (0,3 to 1 metre.. 2 metre in winter), but it's in the city, and would be perfect at your level.

Since you are catching buses, you might like to try Kitesurfing. The metro beaches have perfect conditions for this sport (choppy water), the people who do it are your age (20's), and you can transport your kite stuff via the bus.

You remind me of me when I was 24. I came to Adelaide with no money and toured the southern Australia using coasts and public transport. So I relate to your excitement of discovering a new land :). Good luck, I reckon you are going to have a ball. It's summer time now and Adelaide becomes laid back.

Just remember to carry lots of water with you, as our summers get very hot (+40C) and the hot days can make things very unpleasant if you are not used to it and you have to catch the bus.

Thanks a lot for the informations! So there does exists something like a municipal transport service! I have read that it shouldn't be fully developed and it's better to go by car. (A bicycle should also not be so good. I was used to drive by bike to the university/work. )

@sailhack
My opening line "I'm a 24 years old Austrian girl coming in few weeks to Adelaide" I just used that you know to whom you are talking and to show you that I don't know Australia - so I'm a Newbie and need some informations and of course to get contact to other surfers (that would be great).
The offer from Divaldo I find it great. In addition I would do it in the same way if an Australian comes to my city and asks about windsurfing. There are a few reasons for doing that.
It is more fun to go surfing with someone else and not on my on. You have cultural exchange of course. And also because you have fun on the way to the beach and back and last you can divide fares.

@sharkbiscuit
Thanks for your tip "carrying lots of water with me" - at this point I have another question:

shorty or longy? which wetsuit do you use from Nov-Jan and maybe after May?

At the moment I'm just interested in windsurfing/surfing and not kitesurfing. I do a lot of sports and I really have no more time nor money for a new sport. Although kitesurfing would be easier in transportation. If I'm a kitesurfer I would take my own stuff from Austria but windsurfing stuff costs a lot of money to take to AUS. So at the moment I just want to windsurf and surf!

I have looked for surfing stuff in "ebay" but there is rarely stuff! And if.. from QL - to far away to pick up.
At "onboard" there is just new stuff - not possible for me to buy. After 3 months in ADL I'm going to NZ and maybe come back to AUS. So there is no way for new stuff because of lack of money.

Before I buy a car I firstly need surf stuff and to come to SA!

But... in a few days I' ll be in Adelaide! *yahoo*

THANKS guys! Where are the surfergirls? (I'm missing them in Austria - so I hope to get in contact to some surfergirls in AUS!

ciao luise

Hi L

There is a lot of support on this site, and you'll be able to either borrow stuff or buy cheap stuff (I have a bouyancy vest you can borrow if you need it). This is my 2nd season of windsurfing now, and I've only ever needed a rash vest December to March. For winter period (May) I use a 2mm Titanium which is okay, however next winter i'll get something a bit better.

Good luck :)

Hi luise
I first learnt to windsurf in Austria 27 years ago. There are at least 5 windsurf women who are regularly in the sea. Welcome and looking forward to sailing with you (oh and brushing up on my dialekt - Tirolerish aber hoffentlich verstehe Ich Graz dialekt auch!
Looking forward to meeting you.

Hallo Luise,

...not so much laughed as today! (travel preparation takes so much time and I'm running out of energy - but this answers are really amusing!

Je sais francais un peu aussi et io so un po l'italiano e eu falo um pouquinho portuguese und Deutsch kann ich sowieso and English I think I know it too.

I'm very pleased to see that there are a few surfer girls! :-) [and for the boys: no worries I'm NOT homosexual! ]

So let's go for a surf after the 5th of November (date of arrival)!

So long...

Best wishes from Austria and hang loose,
Luise

P.S.I So in fact I don't need a wetsuit?
P.S.II: If you find any typos, keep them! My English needs to be improved of course! Sorry!

wetsuit is always good. Unless you don't fall off.
In saying that, a summer wetsuit can be ok, and sometimes just a bikini on the hot days, but it can get cool when its windy, I prefer my long wetty so I dont get so many bruises.
