Ive sold the kids to get a quiver of NP V8.
Best feeride sail I have ever used.
Because there are almost no reviews of this sail , who has one and what do you think.
I used to rate the V8's highly and I had a few V8's back in the early 2000's. Then I up graded to the H2 and never really liked them so glad to hear the classic V8 is back in town.
I've also used a h2 in a large size and found it to be powerful and top heavy. This is good for a large sail looking for wind. In stronger wind it was a workout. Having said that , it was fast in a backhand type of way.
The new V8 seem all too easy , lots of grunt for my podgy body yet twisty in the gusts. Not as top speedy as the H2 but not bad.
For a heavy guy , perfect ![]()
It seems that NP love to change names of sails for a fresh look.
The H2 changed to a hornet but still the same kind of sail ( great for a dedicated sailer , or stance for the hornet , so they say ) , meaning if you can crank the backhand hard enough and the fin is big enough and the back leg strong enough it goes really fast.
The new V8 is different , mabee like the old V8 which I've never tried.?
They are just two camber less then the Evo's . awesome sails from what l have read from the reviews.![]()
they are a race sail with a slightly smaller luff & one less batten.
Ok , so I'm the only one with this sail ?
I'm your Huckleberry. I'm the one who has been keen on the NP 2 cam freeride sails over the last 10 years. Yeah the experts will tell you they're overpriced and they're difficult to rig and they crinkle and all sorts of crap but against all the odds I have have managed to get a lot of satisfaction, value for money and huge grins on the water from these sails. Yes, Neil has played around with the names and changed the number of battens from year to year. I first had 2008ish V6's, they were 7 batten. Then when I wore them out I got 2013 Hornets which I'm still using, they're 6 batten. The 2017 V8's are 7 batten. The extra batten adds extra weight and extra power. To me, the extra batten adds the power of an extra 0.5 sq mtr. So, I reckon a 7 batten 6.7 mtr has the same power and attributes as a 6 batten 7.2.
Have you seen the colours of the 2018 V8? I've just got to have a green one ![]()

The green ones are nice looking. As far as I can tell the 2017 and 2018 are the same sail and color. 2018 only comes in green and not the orange option.
ps, don't try the V8 or you'll want a set.
pps, my name is Imax1 and I'm a V8 addict.![]()

Don't get caught hooning with your v8's,
You could get them impounded! ![]()
It seems I'm the only one in the world that has bought them , am I a lepper ?![]()
What sizes do you have. What conditions do you use the sizes in. Running adj out haul?
im after a larg sail for my RB. I'll look ata V8 or Hornet. Depends what's available.
Or even and old V8

9.4 ,8.2 , 7.2 and waiting on 6.2
no adjustable outhaul , don't have one.
There are none left in Aus ,new ones in a couple months.
Rough bay blasting for a heavy me.
9.4 ,0-18 kts 8.2 ,16-20 kts 7.2, 17-25 kts and the 6.2 that I'm waiting for ... when I'm crying for mamma.
If it's a real 30 kts and the sand is hurting my ankles I'll stay on the beach ![]()
With my old H2 8.7 I definitely could have used an adjustable outhaul or even better , downhaul, but even the bigger V8 9.4 just sat there easier. Haven't used it yet in over gusty conditions but I think it would be ok.

I'm pretty sure WSP has adj NP out hauls.
What boom do you use? NP masts, SDM or RDM.

Ok , so I went out today in gusty straight onshore 12 - 20 kts.
Started with a 8.2 and was underpowered in the lulls ( I'm 115 kg ) ![]()
Rigged the 9.4 , power galore , definitely no floating about. This is a grunty sail.
This is what I felt :
In the lulls chase a wave down wind , no problem.
13 - 17 kts absolute bliss,
17-20 kts a bit overpowered feeling and a bit of work but not too bad , easier than a overpowered H2,
I pulled more down haul when the wind picked up and it still had a lot of curve in the front and loosened the leech a lot which kept most of the power when I needed it and made the sail feel less catapulty and shorter feeling in the gusts.
The smaller cams are waaaaaay better than those over complex fragile cams with strings and all the fanfair NP used to use. ( they feel the same in use which seem good as any ).
I don't think they are overly fast ( slower than a H2 or my old Slalum mk 3 and way off aNorth Warp ) but a nice light easy grunty feeling. They don't seem to push as hard on the board ( good early planing ) but don't seem that slippery. Having said that it was rough onshore and it wasn't pinning it down conditions ( not for me anyway ).
Easy to rigg , less down haul pull needed than the H2 . Sets a deeper draught while having a looser leech.
When using the 8.2 on a smaller boom 180-230 the sail was toutching the boom more than what I'm used to , neutral out haul , ( they do have a deep draught , more than a Warp ). I didn't increase out haul because I was already underpowered.
The nice yellow luff pocket gets dirty easy and I don't know where from.
I love this sail , it's great for me ,
Great for easy everyday blasting in choppy conditions .
I haven't given the smaller sizes a go yet. I'm keen to see how fast a smaller powered up one will be.
ps: I'm heavy and of average skill , a lighter better sailer may think different.
I have the 6.7 and 7.7 Hornets and have had them for over a year. I've had to take both of them into a sail repairer because the bottom section of the sail near the foot has pulled out on me during use. Granted I was adding a few cms extra down haul on one of them but the other did the same when only 2cm past spec.
I added the extra down haul because I race with them and found they kept wanting to pick me up in gusts and pull me out of my stance when hit by a gust. I only weigh 70kgs so the extra down haul helped to release more breeze in the gusts and give more acceleration.
I love the look of the sails but was disappointed how easy they damaged. I've since got some older race sails (RS Racing Evo's) and much prefer the stability and acceleration of them in a gust. I must say though the shop I bought them from and NP were great on warranty claims, so I'm grateful for that.

Ouch , I better watch that.
Although I have V8s not Hornets it is a worry. My older H2 which is kind of the same as the Hornets and V8 has had a lot of use and hasn't this type of damage. Maximum down haul i do is 2/3 crease to mast. I don't go to specs and use the crease method , I would hope this is not too much.
Does anyone or know anyone who owns a V8 ?
Im all alone , so lonely.![]()

Ive just purchased a 2016 Hornet 8.2 and will be being very careful with it. First outing today on the Swan with it & my Mistral EQ2. Not overly windy but went well. Looking forward to getting some k's on the clock with it this week.

The 7.7 was only 2cm past spec so that was a bit of a worry. Hopefully the V8's will be better as i've had two warranty claims with NP over this, so hopefully they're aware and made the V8's a little stronger.

They are beautiful sails. I'd just leave it at spec and hopefully you should be fine. If you do have any troubles and you bought it from a shop. then hopefully you'll be covered by warranty if anything goes wrong. I'm sure you'll get plenty of great sailing on it. :)

I didn't have DH all the way as it was so light, about-2cm, although the leach was twisting off a little. Ill keep an eye on the specs.

I used the 7.7 yesterday on my new JP Slalom 71 and after using the race sails a bit lately it was quite a difference. The Hornets are grunty but lack the top end speed and comfortability of the full race sail in gusts. Still , theyre a beautiful sail for the price and for anyone who doesnt want to deal with 4 cams or more. :)
Dry rigged my 7.2 today for the first time just to check it out. When rolling up the sail noticed a small Y shaped crease in the monofilm near the mast . This happened when scrunching the sail onto or off the mast , can't help doing that. Must be carefull and watch that.
How are you rigging & derigging them?
my method.
Insert mast above cams
downhaul 75%
attach boom with spec OH
release DH to 50%
pop cams on
DH to spec
adjust OH
now I'm not real sure of the derigging method. I've tried to do in reverse but cams didn't want to pop off.
What's your methods?
^^^
I kind of rig the same but start with about 90 % downhaul.
The monofilm damage comes when u have to scrunch the sail getting the mast up the luff pocket.
I have done this a million times and am doing it properly. The problem is .... the sail has a small luff pocked with a lot of curve.
To pop the cams off easily derigging , I release the downhaul first , pop off the cams , then release the outhaul . ( the outhaul rope is a little stiff to unclete but not too bad ).
Then I have to scrunch the bottom of the sail quite high up the mast ( past boom height ) to reduce the flex of the mast enough to slide the sail off . Again , small curvy luff syndrome ( S.C.L .S ) for shot , u heard that here first .![]()
