No need for more battens... TR-'s are already extremely stable.
By the way, having stability assured by batten count, instead of extreme skin tension, enables for a nice soft feel and great ease of use. As for weight, TR-5's are slightly lighter than '09 8 battens Gaastra Vapors.

Maui Sails TR-6 2010 : Perfect evolution

MauiSails' entry for the 2010 racing season is TR-6, the perfect evolution of easy to manage power and acceleration, comfortable handling, and impressive speed. World Championship results in Formula, and Pro Slalom and Speed wins are in the lineage of the TR design catalogue, and the feedback and observations of the competitors who test and perform with them provides the foundation of the development. Each year there is a search for the elusive ideal, and the TR-6 is our statement.

Small adjustments to the outline increase tip span, reduce boom length, and in combination with batten angle changes, make the twist even and correct for each situation. A flexible material panel in the lower sleeve evens tension and allows for slightly more cam pressure with positive rotation. Sleeves are smooth and the powerful lower sections are stable for high end control and speed.

The continued use of our custom load cell is developing a data base which helps us to maintain the same feel throughout the range and to make the transition from size to size and mast to mast progressive and dependable, assuring similar handling character and performance. By utilizing this scientific method of development we are able to define the tension required to adequately form the skin of the foil, bend the mast appropriately, and balance luff curve against twist. A soft feeling responsive wing is the final result.

Whether you are looking for superb light wind Formula with our outstanding 12.0, excellent mid-range Slalom performance, or maxed out overpowered Speed sailing, the TR-6 will blow you away with its fantastic all around characteristics, made for sailing that is fast. and fun.

We will continue to use ODL04 Technora? X-Ply from Dimension Sailcloth for our larger Slalom and Formula sails in the XT range. Significant weight savings, superb durability, and World Champion performance supply the added value and make the TR-6 XT the perfect choice for high level competition. The MauiSails SRS 100% Carbon race masts and the super-stiff MauiSails Monocoque Carbon Race Booms complete the perfect rig package.l get ready to race and win.

Features:

? Low profile batten tensioners with load oriented attachment for smooth leech

Orange is 12m
White is 11m
12m needed 10mm and 11m needed 5mm more downhaul than i had in these photos.
Sailed with my new 12m and a new board!!!!!!!!!!!
It was like being was "blind"
Coming from North Sails to Maui Sails, is like being in a parallel reality where 12m sails are easy and efficient to manage. And where a 12m Formula sail is like freeriding.
Am still spinning from how good it all feels, So I can't really comment much.
Except that the 12m felt like an 11m, as far as weight and handling are concerned.
Yet LOW END GRUNT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
The super efficient twist dumps and releases the flow of air in a tidy and efficient manner.
What an amazing 12m this will turn out to be!!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to get back out.

Hi W100,
Last season I was on 2009 Exocet/2009 North Sails.
Sailed mainly VMG Blades as well as a few Hurricanes.
Yesterday was my first day on the water with my New 2010 Exocet/Maui Sails TR6 xt.
Not much wind yesterday. But enough to feel that the new board sits a lot higher in the water.
It rails much easier, does not sail as flat, and is deep and easy downwind.

Last season, I had all my fins raked back quite a lot between 4/5 degrees.
This helped release the nose of the old board which had a tendency to stick. (particularly downwind)
It also has a slightly different sailing position. (out on the rail instead of last years model that was more on top.)

The Maui Sails TR6 has AMAZING low end power. Makes my old North Sails feel underpowered.
Fin that I had in yesterday was a K series VMG 76 cut down, with my 12m TR6xt.
This combination felt fast and pointed well. (I need a few more days to get the most out of my new gear)

I feel that this board is not as fin sensitive as last years board.
Am looking forward to testing all the other sizes. 11m, 10m, with my VMG70 and VMG73.
Will also try my old faithful Hurricanes.
But my first impression is that my new board/sail combo will fly with super speed this season on VMG!

I think that Gonzalo has done a great job with the input and development he has done. It can't be coincidence that the TR6 feels so good on this board. As Gonzalo must have used the TR5 for R&D.

Cheers & Good sailing

Hey JJay

It is always great to get new gear I know th feeling, weel done.

The sails are impressive maui really keep there own look.

The 11 and 12 as your choise is intersting, why so close I would of thought that 2 sail sizes apart would give you a better versatility just interested?

Anyway good stuff

Kind Regards
Walt

Hi Walt,
I have all 3 Formula sizes.
TR6 xt 10m as well. I didn't get a chance to rig it yesterday.
Last season I had the 3 North Warps, 9.8m, 11m, and 12m.
I was using the 12m up to around 12 knots.
The 11m up to around 18 to 20 knots.
Then the 9.8m over 20 knots.

Cheers

Hey JJay,

Thanks for the reply,

Wow you are set for all conditions.

I struggle to hold my no cam Ka Koyote 6.6 in 20+ conditions what is the secret to sail if you are holding down the 9.8 great going.

Hope to see you at the bay to see it in action.

Kind Regards
Walt

Hi choco,
I live mainly in Greece.
GRE200 are my registered sail numbers.
I try and come back here to OZ for parts of the summer.
It's great to sail and race as many events as possible with Stormriders and the NSW Formula fleet.

hallo JJ,
are you satisfied of your gear?
Now,probably, you can give a better feedback.
Which performance area you think your board/sail/fin succeed and which not compared to other comps?

Hi W100,
The new Exocet together with the New TR6's is a sweet combination!!!!!!!!
I'm coming back from nearly 2 years of no regular TOW because of injuries.
So my results are not an indication of how good this combo is/can be.
The new EXOCET Formula board is SOOOOOO easy and free downwind.
Teamed with the TR6's and their deep powerful profiles, downwind ability is even better.
I found over the last week of racing that the board and sail combo was easy to rail and track upwind and when trimmed right (need to find the sweet spot with the outhaul),,,the sail has amazing upwind speed. In general the whole sailing sensation Of the TR6/Exocet combo is higher and more alive and free.
Gonzalo has obviously developed the board and sail together. So keep an eye on how the top riders will perform on this sweet combo.

Cheers
Jjay

P.s I think that the secret to a fin for this combo of EXOCET/TR6 is speed over power.
Think of trying some fast fins rather than super powerful fins.

COOL

SORRY FOR THAT

The new EXOCET Formula board is SOOOOOO easy and free downwind.

I AGREE.EASY NOTICED THAT WHEN FIRST TIME I TESTED THE BOARD

Teamed with the TR6's and their deep powerful profiles, downwind ability is even better.

YOU'RE THE SECOND GUY WHO SAY THAT (FIRST ONE WAS GONZO ON EXO FORUM).WHAT EXACTLY MEAN "DEEP POWERFULL PROFILE"?eVEN THE NEW NORTH SEEMS TO HAVE THAT DEEP POWERFULL PROFILE.I GUESS IT'S MORE WHERE THAT DPP IS LOCATED RATHER THAN HOW MUCH DEEP IT IS (AND,I THOUGHT,THE TR'S HAS IT A LITTLE BIT FAR BACK).
IF YOU PLEASE WOULD EXPLAIN IT TO ME I'D REALLY APPRECIATED.

I found over the last week of racing that the board and sail combo was easy to rail and track upwind and when trimmed right (need to find the sweet spot with the outhaul),,,the sail has amazing upwind speed. HIGHER,LIVIER,FREER THAN WHAT?

I'M SURE HE'S GOING TO BE AT THE TOP ONCE MORE.

ok w100,
1st,,,,,,,,,,,let me try and explain IMHO, (in my humble opinion)
I don't know about the new 2010 Norths Sails Warp. But I do know about the old ones.

I sailed North Warps in models 2007, 2008, 2009. I felt that all of them were a little underpowered.
They were just not deep enough. Very shallow down low. Power was well forward, but not deep enough. And when I released my outhaul there was not much difference in power. Possibly due to super stiff battens and overall sail tension. I'm not sure?

Anyway, I like my power well forward for tracking upwind. I find a flatter sail gives me better angles. But for the downwind I want to keep the power on for as long as possible when tying to point low with the wind. (low apparent wind). So by bagging my sail I feel like my center of effort expands or moves slightly back.

Always felt like I struggled with the Norths in light wind. Trade off was that in high wind formula the Norths were fantastic.

With the TR6's the deep low end profile/power is quite sensitive to outhaul trim.
Of course all sails work better downwind when you bag them a little.
But it has suprised me,,, how much the TR6 can change character buy working with the outhaul, compared to my old Norths.
The already powerful sail can become even more effective downwind with a little practice.

2nd,,,,,,,,The new board sails Higher, and more free and alive than the old board. The old board sailed very flat because of the very flat rocker, and wanted to stick it's nose down.

3rd,,,,,,,,,I used to concentrate on fins and set up that would release or lift the nose. Now with the improvements in the rocker and rails of the new board as well as some tweeking to the tail cut outs. We can concentrate on speed at all angles with fast slippery fins, instead of worrying how we were going to keep the board flying with thick super powerful fins that had a little more drag.

I'm no ARG3,,,,! For he really is one of the Formula Immortals.
I'm just a keen guy like the rest. Trying to get better and go faster.

Love my Formula.
