Was sailing in towards the rock wall on Saturday, and a 3-4ft bullshark exploded out of the water about 30m in front of me, must have been chasing some bait fish around. Was probably <50m off the rock wall. A couple standing on the rock wall also saw it. Pretty cool!
Anyone else seen anything similar there before? I sometimes see schools of bait fish there getting chased around, now I know what might be chasing them!
I saw a similar size shark do the same thing at the entrance to the harbour last week when I was rigging up ![]()
Yep, Adam and I have seen them at Sandstone doing a similar thing. Do a bit of a google search and you'll find out that it's how they behave in summer, apparently they jump out of the water heaps when the water gets warmer. Brisbane river ferry skippers see them do this a bit.
Had a 3-4 foot bull shark pass directly under me when I was on the SUP off the rock wall between RQ and Manly a few weeks ago - it was chasing something (not me!) Polarising sunglasses are great while paddling for spotting the marine life down there.
Have also seen reef sharks circling crab pots.
I don't wanna know!
My grandma always use to say - "what you don't know wont kill ya"
I hope she was right!!
Have seen this at the entry to Manly Harbour. They are all over the bay even seen them in the shallows of Wellington point. The bigger ones hang around the boats when they are checking crab pots as the eat the undersized sand crabs and fish frames discarded.
More concerned about hitting one at speed.
Was out cruising around Cootharaba on SUP on Monday, had about a 3 foot bull shark jump out in front of me up near the green beacon. A lot of mullet swirling around as I went through were he was.
Someone reported seeing a large shark from the shore at Queens beach last week, said it was a tiger. Don't know how you could identify the shark whilst standing on the beach.
Green beacon is ESE about 3kms from elanda, Russell was talking to local fisherman who said he netted approx. 60 on Tuesday & one of his mates in Brisvegas pulled in over 260 out of Tingalpa creek [Lota] last week as well.
260 in a week!!! 260 less to worry about. Must be 1000's lurking around. Surprised we don't see more of them.

Gees Mal, I don't know what's worse, seeing them or not seeing them........

Just after I started windsurfing I heard that the commercial fishermen capture about 1000 bull sharks every year from Lake Cootharabah.

Lucky the water not clear in the bay ![]()
Could we see sharks from drones ? It will be quite interesting to see full windsurf session on and plenty dark shapes beneath the water just waiting for failed gybe...
At 2.00pm, yesterday, while waiting for the tide to drop, a group of windsurfers from MBM and BCC observed, from the carpark lookout, a 3m bull shark leap out of the water, mid channel in Lota creek . This didn't stop 15+ sailors rig up and enjoy the flat conditions on 7 metre sails and 90 to 100 lit boards.

Agree, not very helpful subject in encouraging young kids to leave iPads at home and to try windsurfing or any watersport around the bay.
Actually even I don't want to hear it.... just might get into back of my mind

George, It definitely good motivation not to drop your gybes![]()
Here's some pretty reassuring data. Last shark attack, non-fatal in this part of the Bay: Wellington Point 1 Apr 1972. And here's all the Qld data since records started

But Remember that has nothing to do with when the next might be for example WA had many years with not one attack and then heaps in a short period. Also despite our very small population we are have the most fatal shark attacks of any country.
Gee wizz, hundreds of people die on our roads every year but we still jump in the car ............. sharks are just another creature in this world that we have to live with. If we manage ourselves properly to lower the risks then it just comes down to plain old bad luck ![]()

Similar with Ballina. Now it is a fast food joint.
Greg, Chris, Anne & Paul were standing in waist deep water near Elanda Pt on Sat arvo when Paul was bumped on leg by something large & solid?
Crapped himself & jumped into middle of sail & they all got out of there in a hurry.

So that's why the lake is always brown.
When I was just a little boy it was ghost stories that scared the pants off us.
Now it's shark stories. Same pair of pants, different pocket.
Gives us plenty to talk about when there's not enough wind.
Keep 'em coming. Did I tell you about the time I was...............
How about a little competition for the best or scariest story.
