Dean just sail over with a few guys, you can't miss it, you'll see the reef break and depending on wind direction it can be between about 6K to about 12K. Forget it in marginal winds as It'll be hard to get back to Green, guys do it but not me. The aerial photos posted here look like Michaelmas, you'll need a boat to get there, awesome spot and I've only been lucky enough to sail it once.
If anyone's interest, this is a video sailing Green to Arlington, I didn't sail across it because I was on my own.
ah yeah, drip 'trip'![]()
I'm keen as, but also mindful it's an 'event' , and all the Insurance BS that goes with such, Ideally would be great to do a 'freerace' over there and back! ![]()
Really looking forward to it, last year was great, I got 4 Day of great winds, hoping for 7 this time!..
Thank's Bob, looks awesome, can still see the island in distance which is reassuring. Green Island really looks the solution for a cheap fix in the middle of the no wind season. Got flights for $169 each way minus some points accumulated from work, down to $100 both ways. The go fast Red looks excellent in the vid.
I can't help myself, the memory of the warm days sailing on crystal clear water has got to me..
I'm on my way up to Green Island also... can't wait.. Just gotta get it all booked now but the decision is made!!!

Are you coming up Scot?
I'm arriving Friday afternoon. Good tides for some training straight off the 8am boat on Saturday ;-)
Any local comments on conditions or forecast for the upcoming week?
AKA WT
should we pack!
Mainly asking for fellow QLD crew going up...Although I may try something radical and consider bringing 2 sails!![]()
Looking windy!
With wave forecasts of up around 3m for Tues/Weds, I wonder what point the ferry stops running? Better take the seasickness ginger pills those days ![]()

Not looking good at this point Sean, was dead keen and had been planning it for a long while but the work Gods have conspired against me. If I do make it its going to be a very late call.
Very local tip (like sailed yesterday on the island!) is bring some small gear! it's howling and going to be even more!![]()
check out the graphs!

Spoke to mate of mine you use to be skipper on the Green Island Ferry. He said the ferry only normally gets cancelled if there is a gale warning for insurance purposes. The swell will be on the beam and the diesel fumes tend to work there way into the cabin. Would you like a hot tuna milkshake with that!!! Forcast looks unreal.
Word is a few 6's got thrown in this arve before boarding the plane after a heads up it might hit 30 knots.
3 local Qld'ers up here so far that I know o******ave S and I loaded up a maxi to the hilt....if you haven't left yet.. BIG Tip...QANTAS Scales are dodgy!
Very stressful time at airport trying to make the weight! Had to ditch my secret stash of red snakes, museli bars, couple of boardies, a towel, a harness, a fin....the list goes on ...what a drama...made the weight with 2 minutes to spare!!! phewwwww![]()
Mrs was super impressed with the distress call for an urgent return back to the airport to pick up the 'excess', with screaming toddler on board...![]()
Makes you really think about your gear, 1 board and 2 sails isn't really the issue, its all the extra padding, packing, mast bags etc..every little bit adds up!
Will try and post pic's updates via Freerace Face Book Page...forecast is still no Wind tomorrow and then windy rest of the week!...![]()
Jonesy did you purchase the extra baggage online? I bought some last night for $30 flying with Qantas. Has anyone carried fins in there carry on, or are they considered weapons with the sharp trailing edge?
Dean
Put the fins in your suitcase. Security guys will take them away otherwise.
Keep each bag under 23kg and you will be fine. If you are slightly over go online and buy another bag. It's not worth the stress like jonesy went through to save $35. If you have time, buy a handheld luggage scale from jaycar do you can accurately weigh the gear.
Also take the sails out of the sail bags if you are close. They weigh more than you might think.
Have a good trip.
Thanks for the tips James, see you up there. Green Island accommodation may be popular if the trip across becomes a misery.
A simple way to weigh your bag is to pick up your bag and stand on your bathroom scales and record the weight. Then re-weigh yourself without your bag. Subtract one from the other and you have the weight of the bag. If you are over, buy extra luggage allowance on line before you go to the airport. Its cheaper than being slugged with an over-weight penalty at check-in at the airport.
Good luck to all Qlds. The forecast looks epic.
The wind and waves are never a problem going to Green, it's all the asians chucking up that takes the edge off it ![]()
Actually the windier and rougher on the way over the more excited you'll be ![]()
