Hi All,

That is good to hear the lake is still full, my daughter and friend are going up to kayak fish the lake next week and I was hoping it would stay full. That sounds a waste I know, they should be windsurfing the lake.

Thanks Adam, nice to be back.
Had a nice sail at old bar today - you should try it on a strong nor easter (ENE) and a decent bit of water... was a bit low today and that was with a 22cm weedy!
Heading up to SWR next week if you fancy a sail up there... Phil was saying he's been trying to get you to come up!

Hey KevB,

With the east to south east wind today and a cracker tomorrow perfect direction for the lake I'm sure you will be well powered if not over powered with the 8.
Enjoy.

kind Regards
Walt

Not for much longer,..word on the street is that it's being let out Tuesday. I was looking forward to some blasting on the lake this coming wk end, but it ain't to be. On the upside, the beach fishing at Sand Bar will be the dope!

I never understood why they can't setup a permanent drain at a certain level to keep the lake at a certain height. Wouldn't that be relatively easy to do, or is there more to it?

Maybe could be done but it would change the ecosystem. A stable, sanitised shoreline is not the best for a lot of wildlife.

Its funny though, in that the opening to the ocean is silted up with sand, and they have to use a front end loader to cut an opening to the sea. If they let nature take its course, they would end up with a flooded area, or a stagnant pond. Instead they let it build up, cut an opening, and then let it build up again.

How about two drains, with a choice of lake heights? One for Formula boards, and one for slalom boards? They could alternate between them to keep any wildlife happy that like varying tide lines.

I'm only annoyed that the times I have tried to sail there, it has been either not enough wind, or too shallow.

Try Botany Bay, it's the best silted up, very little wild life, polluted water way, that's close to Sydney and perfect for windsurfing all year round. Great for formula and slalom! I'm happy with Smiths, just the way it is thanks

Found out today from a sailor staying at Sandbar that the lake is empty

Looks like it was opened Sunday afternoon.

This site gives live feed for the rainfall at, and depth of Smiths Lake (Tarbuck Bay is in Smiths just around the corner). Most of January 2013 it was about 1.2m to 1.3. It is opened when the level gets to 2.1m, according to the local council.

Manly Hydraulics have rainfall and river level sites up and down the coast, some may be useful to sailors in other areas.

Thanks gh for the heads up.

One of the local's conveyed this while we where there last holidays so if they say so I guess it was true.

The last opening prior to christmas 2011 there where one or two boats that where swept out from the opening channel, That's some force of water being syphoned from the narrow opening.

Was planning to get away for a sailing weekend after easter, might wait now.

Kind regards
Walt
