Here are 5 animals more likely to kill you than sharks:

Cows kill 20 people per year just in the United States.
Dogs kill around 30 people per year in the US.
Ants kill up to 50 people each year in Africa.
Hippos kill around 2,900 people in Africa.
Mosquitoes kill up to 820,000 people per year (800,000 from Malaria and a further 20,000 from Dengue) around the world. This makes them about 117,000X more deadly than sharks. Think about the next time you get bitten.

I had planned to, but I removed a good chunk of skin on my leg in a bike stack the other day ..... so I wast worried about a shark but more so an infection from all the other poo that would be floating around after the heavy rain.

looking very gusty

When cows start showing up at my local beach I will be worried! Or I'll be at lake George!

ive met Andrew, and seen his board with the teeth marks. It is a serious mouth that fit around a board. The teeth marks are on both sides of the board.

How fast was he going when it happened? Planing?

I've heard of a guy attacked in WA, I think it was Gnarlrooo (whatever it's really called). If I remember correctly it was a Euro tourist, was planing but not top speed or anything, and it was a mako shark. If I still remember correctly it could get him through the sail after the initial attack.

Makos are the fastest shark out there.they usually stay well off shore.if l remember a fisherman was found dead (disemboweled) on his boat in a pool of blood many years ago.the coroner signed the death certificate as death by shark.

After spending nearly 30 years floating on a surfboard at dawn and dusk, riding a sailboard feels as safe as sitting on the deck of a cruise liner.

despite the logic and statistics a lot of surfers have an unshakeable irrational fear of sharks. Compared to horse riders a lot of surfers are complete whimps.
www.smh.com.au/world/kelly-slater-calls-for-a-shark-cull-20170227-4r2qg.html

2 million surfers in Australia, vs. 1 million horses
horses 77 deaths 2001 - 7
sharks 16 deaths 2001 - 7

So two to one higher participation rate (at least) in surfing.

That becomes 144 to 16, call it 10 to 1. It's 10 times more dangerous to be riding a horse than riding a wave.

Damn. Just when I was going to get back on my horse after 10 months away due to a broken ankle..

Are there any workable shark deterrents windsurfers can wear? Too many seen in lake Macquarie lately including a 4.2m great white who hangs around.

You're better off just giving up. Stop sailing.

Dont listen to Rexi Sue! He's a nice bloke but just a little bit simple with alternatives.. Just hang at Budge with the mullet and smugglers. Join our team as well we are a lovely bunch

Thanks Mick.. Doesn't Nathan think there's a shark in the channel?

Seriously Mick!!! This is a windsurfing forum. The sport revolves around water. If individuals don't like or are scared of what is in the water stay out of it! What more 'simple alternative' can be better??? Should I have said wear a tin foil hat maybe? Would that appease you? Maybe a chain link suit of armour? The idiocy is in the question, not my blunt answer.

I think it is a good question. i know they make special stripey wetsuits for surfers that are supposed to fool sharks..just wondered if anyone had come up with some sort of thingy you could wear on your leg that would emit sounds etc to deter them..

I know that Jason in Gerroa wears something around his ankle to deter sharks, maybe you can ask him, some time ago that device was pretty big and had a sort of antenna, impractical for windsurfing, but now is as small as a gps

Ah ha! That's what I must have remembered..I thought asking the windsurfing community would be the fastest way to get an answer from someone who had tried something..

I have taken to towing an enormous inflatable killer whale behind my board and wearing a crocodile onesie to repel sharks. So far no shark attacks so this must be a truly awesome strategy
