For all those people who worked on the refreshed GPS Challenge site I for one would like to say thanks. It looks very good on my Mac with Firefox.

The linking of sessions to teams is very handy. The rearranged ranking menus are an improvement.

There are bound to be other changes too. Congratulations to all involved. The GPS Challenge builds up the windsurfing community.

Hi, Like the new look and functionality too - great work.

Miss the mix-up of the NZ teams in the pot - lost a bit of spice?

Any chance of integrating them back in?

Thanks - MartinJE

Nice job guys. Has the age thing been sorted cos I am still listed as in the 'Master' class even though I turned 45 last month?

Great site, well thought out and really well written!
I hate to think the hours that Ben has put into this site re-write.
All we can do is support the site, and the sponsors.
I think some T-Shirts will be available at the presentation for purchase and this helps offset the costs for the site owners.

I for one and some others are clamoring for polo's, please - please.

Thanks for the kind words

If you're in the wrong age division, then change your birthday in your preferences. This should then rejig the rankings

Tim set some blistering speeds when he was a junior, so those results stay for posterity. I've just set his birthday properly, so any results you see for him in the junior table were done when he was a junior.

Check the open rankings -- he should appear there as well.

Yes I agree that they gave the site a bit of spice, and I'm trying to figure out a sensible way of showing the data, while keeping each countries rankings separate. Any ideas?

How about in the drop down box where you select the country, you have a category for "All Countries" as well as "NZ" and "Australia"? Maybe this would open it up to other countries as well (Croatia?). And then Hardie's world domination would be well under way

ok sounds good, i like it that we have a target to strive for during our time as juniours. Also just saw the pic of izaak and i which appears at times at the bottom screen. Very happy with the site, actually im about to post something on it!!!

Great job Nebs!!!

I think it would be nice to see "The Whole World" as a page, similar to the separate Aussie & NZ pages.
Especially with the competitiveness between Aus & NZ, it would be good to see the combined results.

I think if you can incorporate international competition, it might give other countries an incentive to join.

Whether you leave it team based, or pick the best 2 results from the Country, is an interesting possibility.

So Nebs, has the Doppler / Trackpoint thing been resolved? I am assuming that you want doppler where available, but I recall there was some discussion that Alphas are more accurate in trackpoint? Is this right and what is the GTC policy on this?

According to sailquick, for alphas GT11 is more accurate in trackpoint, GT31 more accurate in doppler.
But I looked at Adams 40kt GT11 & Gt31 files and the 31 shows a good alpha that doesn't appear on the 11, with trackpoints, until the separation distance is increased to 64m. When I changed the 11file to doppler that alpha came in at 50m, so in future, I'm going to check my GT11 alphas with both doppler and trackpoints.

Hi AUS1111,

The general consensus is as follows:
NAVI GT11 - Use doppler for most things, but trackpoints for alphas
NAVI GT31 - Use doppler for everything
Garmin - Use 2 second trackpoint, or 1 second trackpoint if you can set your device up this way.

Please note that there is now a new section of the rules, which reads:

Responsibility:

You are responsible for your own data. You must believe that you actually did a certain speed before you post that number, however you work it out. This website works mostly by the honesty system, and if you aren't honest with your numbers, then you will be found out eventually.

However you decide to work out your numbers, the idea is to be as honest as possible. I hope that the explicit declaration of doppler/trackpoint makes it a bit more transparent as to who's using what. I'm not going to set in stone which system you should use, as this should be up to the person concerned depending on their individual circumstances. For example, there are times when you might decide to use a different system because some data is invalid. Sometimes people have posted the display max speed because their track was invalid, for example. I have no problem with that.

I'm very pleased to see the 2008 winners (Swan River Mob) proudly using doppler, I think this sends the right message about which system to use.

Cool - that's pretty much what I thought, and what I have been doing anyway.

It seems fair to say that if you are serious, you would be using a Navi / doppler. That's not to say that everyone should be serious of course!

I think our team captain, Pete, specified a while back that SRM are to use doppler.

I've noticed that there are some odd Alphas in my test data for the ka72 site. In at least one case I had an Alpha (that I've previously posted here) where the end point was clearly outside the 50m circle.

It seems that Mal has some code in RealSpeed that tries to compensate for the 1 second gap between points by allowing that you *may* have travelled back to within 50m of your start point. My site isn't that smart, yet...

Dylan, was that alpha calculated from doppler or trackpoints? cause the tracks, must be trackpoints, if the alpha's doppler, then the doppler data may be within 50m.
That's what I assumed was happening with Adam's 2 files, the trackpoint and doppler data gave different separations.

That's the doppler alpha. The trackpoint alpha is on the same gybe, but not the same set of points. The doppler Alpha is only 277m long, and the trackpoint one is 203m, so they are both well within the 500m limit.

Anyway, just pointing out that the calculation method is not necessarily a straightforward distance between the first and last points.

I wasn't worried about the 500m, it's the 50m separation, that I think is changing here. If you could display the doppler track, I think your alpha would be inside the 50m radius, it's just outside the trackpoint 50m radius

Just got back from the wop wops.....new site looks nice but makes me
(at least )feel like "Neddy no mates"............. stuck out in the back room competing on our own.
How 'bout listing us with all the other teams?

Had a feeling you guys would feel like that, it's not the same without you.
I vote for a "whole World" pages that shows all teams.
I think there's merit in keeping exclusive aussie pages, but not sure if every other nation need their own pages, After all they may only have 1 team, so there's not much reason for them to join.

As far as I know, the coordinates of each point are the same for trackpoints and doppler. So the distance between the start and end points is the same regardless of whether you are looking at trackpoints or doppler.

I've been working on both types of data for a while now doing the ka72.com thing, and there is only one set of coordinate pairs in a doppler file, not two.

The main difference is that doppler provides more detailed information on point speed, bearing and distance traveled between points.

Well that's strange, my theory was the only way I could explain, the trackpoint alpha needing to be 14m wider than the doppler alpha.
Mind you this is with GPSarPro not realspeed. I'll have another play around and see if I can come up with a better explanation.

OK we've now got an international leaderboard...

Please let me know if you can think of a better way to lay out the information. Ideas are welcome!!
