I've started doing the big rewrite, and was wondering what ideas you all had for next year. Put down whatever you think might be a good idea, they all go into the pot, and simmer away for a month. I can't guarantee everything you say will go in, but if you don't say anything you can't complain next year!
Guaranteed:
* Redesign of colour scheme / look and feel
* Proper setting of age division (I haven't forgotten you Tim!)
* Speed up most pages including rankings
* Include NZ on the map
* Include board / sail / fin info in sessions
* Include calculation method (doppler / trackpoint) in sessions
Wishlist:
* Ability to upload your file to the site, and it automatically figures out your numbers
* Allow people to flag questionable sessions, if enough people flag a session as 'dodgy' then it stops counting towards the team's total, until it gets verified by a timekeeper
* Change rules to ensure that people always post the most accurate numbers that they have data for (doppler / trackpoint)
* Set up "Claimed Speed" somehow
* Full international support (USA, UK, France for starters) while retaining existing Australia-
centred site for Aussies. This would work similar to a franchise scheme.
Any ideas? Speak now or forever hold your peace.
1.how about entering your weight, so us lighter guys can see how we rank
2. 500m division
But overall the site works really well
I like the idea of a 500m division. It's the standard distance for a world record, and some spots are too small for a nautical mile without a gybe. I know the sandy point guys would agree...
I would like to see a handicap event running as a seperate simultanious event.
We should have enough data to set up a fairly accurate handicap scheme which could have some interesting results at the end of the year.
Get rid of distance- no relevance with going fast at all, only shows how much time you have to waste and how windy your location is from dawn till dusk, replace it with 500m.
On the sessions screen instead of having sailors willy nilly listed within the team have them in their ranked position (bring on internal rivalry [}:)]).
Overall I agree the site is great, thanks guys.
I would agree with adding 500m.
Also like the idea of adding weight divisions to the rankings as an optional filter.
Cheers
David
Also a member cleanup might be in order. Send a note to all members who have not posted for the past 18 months asking whether they want to remain in the comp.
The trouble with adding a 500m category is that suddenly all the tables don't line up anymore. I think six categories is enough for anyone... I do agree that as 500m is the world record standard, then it should be considered.
If you want a 500m division, then something else has to go. Perhaps the nautical mile?
Regarding international competition, some of the other countries seem to want to have different divisions, so should we rank the various countries on only the 5x10sec number?
Take either distance or Nm out then only dedicated speed spots have a chance
.
Same with adding 500m in as well
The balance is good, please don't mess with it![]()
Nah leave distance in.... find it very interesting and for someone to be able to sail fair distance (oh i duno take Sam out the hat, 404km, outstanding) that should defently be recognised because thats incrediably skillfull also!!!
Cheers
Bubs
definitely leave distance in. It really gives everyone a chance to be equals, even if your not the fastest sailor you could be a great endurance sailor. Also i think that the weight divisions are a great idea to.
As an outside observer I think you should clarify the "team" thing.
Some teams are getting quite large whilst others have only a few members.
No, Nebbs, I mean Total distance ever. I know I can look at profiles but just interested to see how much distance people are covering. Not just in one session.
Just a request if it is reasonably simple to do.
With the team thing I think as long as people are encouraged to post for a team and the team is active the numbers don't really matter. At the heart is getting a social group around sailing and the more the merrier. I think the consolidation of teams to make a functioning one is fine.
If you take out say the NM and replace it with the 500 (which has a similar speed to the 10 sec ave) you may upset the balance of the multi discipline comp. Having the NM and distance takes out any speed course dominance and allows other spots a chance to win the month. Having the NM is a big disadvantage for us as we have to jybe but having the bank at the pit is a Huge advantage for the 10 sec, s The biggest problem is every one gets (or not gets wind) Maybe trial a handicap system along side the current system to see how it would work, Maybe use the difference in last years points between the winner and the 10th place.
Here’s the top 5
Srm won by 412pts (over 10th) + current points 226 =638
MBM 375+259=634
OSD 370+285=655
MM 330+301=631
PC 327+330(Aprox) =657
TAS 0+492=492
BCB 0+510=510
P 0+630=630
What this would do is reward new teams and over time might produce a more level playing field as the top 5 is the same as last years. It makes the top teams work harder.![]()
I also like it the way it is too, just like everyone to get reliable wind all year ![]()
The balance is spot on right now. If you ditch the NM and add 500m Pit crew would have a big advantage. At the moment we have pretty much the fastest top speed spot but we have not dominated at all. In fact we usually struggle to stay on the top few teams. Each of the states/areas has something in the mix that they can excel at and keep the mix interesting to all. It is either inspired design or pure luck.
Whatever it is, it works. ![]()
If anything we should insist that all posted sessions take place in 'home' waters! [}:)][}:)][}:)]![]()
PLEA: Keep it a TEAM challenge. That is what makes us different and interesting. Those who crave individual glory have ample outlet on GPS-SS where there is a different emphasis, even on accuracy. Lets keep our comp a FUN, TEAM comp.
Nebbian, In your opening thread, you mention the age division. I am not sure what you mean, but I have often thought that the splits are a bit weird. I think it should be considered by experts but I have never heard a, say 55 year old, complain that he was beaten by a, say a 25 year old, because the latter was younger. I started windsurfing at the age of 50 but now in my 70s I do see my performance on the wane. In these times of aging windsurfers it may be worth considering a split somewhere about the 70 mark.....Herby
Another idea .. Some teams have a massive amount a members where others struggle just to field a team. Instead of the 2 member minimum posting what about 1/3 of team members have to post to qualify a day (keeping the two members for the smaller teams)?
One prob with distance is it does disadvantage people that can only sail 1 or 2hrs.
All other divisions are doable by most people.
not sure about 500m maybe 250 would be better.
ta Vando
not that i've contibuted a track this year BUT!!!!!!!!!!
i think everyone is down on the distance component because you are all scared of sailing more than 400 km's in a session. ![]()
hehe ........ [}:)]
