May have been answered before, but how are each fitting GPS on person/rig so it doesn't get hidden from satellite view. Do most do what I have done and strap onto upper arm? It tends to slip around under arm, so if you do, what are you using to keep it in place?
I use upper arm with the walkie talkie aquapac. Never had it slip around under. I have had gps ripped from upper arm once, so forearm equals gps goooone.
Homemade custom GPS holder, very comfortable, doesn't slip around arm. Only complaint is that with the mesh it's hard to read the numbers, so for my next version I'll use clear plastic instead of mesh.

Most sailors that I have seen wear it on the upper arm or wrist. I wear one on the right wrist where I can take a quick peek at it on the run and another on my left bicep for backup. Both usually have no problems with sky view but it is important to have them firm enough so that they don't rotate around the arm and hang under it. That has a tendancy to ruin reception.
EG:
We are looking at mounting them on the helmet for even better reception.
I use upper arm also mineral, I have the walkie talkie pac and no probs with it slipping down. I also use the cord, incase the strap comes undone in a getoff etc.
Being a blind old b*stard, I wait till after my sail to see my max speed, but I do keep an eye out for the flashing red led ![]()
Just posted a photo of my navi case, not sure how to do the link to it from here, but its made in the same way as the garmin cases.Gets it first test tommorrow...I Hope
The buttons on the Navi stick up and seem to stick to the vinyl. Do you guys have any trouble with random button events? I was wondering if it would be a good idea to protect the buttons in some way.

Decrep being the wise guru of fixing stuff came up with and easy fix
Bung a piece of sponge in after your GPS which holds the cover of off the button.
The sponge has to be slightly thicker than your GPS, if you are sneeky about it I'm sure your Wife, brother, sister wouldn't notice it missing from their pillow.
Yeh, but so far only setting it up before going out. I did see somewhere how to fit a nylon washer over the toggle. I thought about a rubber O-ring instead ?
As Elmo says, I'm using a piece of foam rubber 4cm thick, I've used it on about 3 sessions without a problem.
I had thought about some sort of washer, but keeping it in place seemed a problem.

What I did this afternoon, (no wind and all) found some packing styrene, and carefully cut a window for the screen and a groove for the toggle, on/off and LED, thick enough to have toggle below surface. cut it same size as NAVi, and held in place by two large office type aeroplane engines (big lackey bands)
Slips into aqua pack no problem.
Decrepit, like your idea, styrene will probably start to crumble after a bit of my treatmentwill see what we have in that line at work tomorrow, that I can use
Good idea Mineral, will also add boyancey incase of nasty hispeed dismount.
Well done.

In my case the regularity of that, is more than one would expect![]()

I originally started with the Foretrex strapped to my upper arm, but found that I got "muscle pump" too easily - there was no optimum position where I could have it tight enough not to move, but not affect the muscle. Eventually I found that my wrist was the best spot, as I can tighten it as much as is necessary.
And if you using an Aquapac, some (usually the bigger models) come with a strap/string which you can use to wrap around your neck (upper arm) or wrist (wrist).
Hardy started me of with the rope round my neck.
Elmo kindly pointed out, that in a bad catapult if the rope happened to tangle in the boom, -- you could strangle or loose your head!!!!
Since then the rope goes round my arm.

Perfect, just slid it into the aqua pack, and NAVi rest up against it, bit at the base so it doesn't flop about

Think I'll stick with Elmo's advice anyway, putting a slip knot round my neck just doesn't feel right anymore!!!

Mathew, if you (or your partner) are handy with a needle and thread you could sew some of the hook part of velcro on the inside of the arm band so it catches on the wetsuit nylon. Had the same circulation problems as you. Now with a 4 x 5cm patch on the inside even if it's loose it never slips or rotates. Makes it easier putting on one handed as well. I used some old hook side stuff from worn out footstraps.

I use a foretrex in an aquapac. The velcro strap on those is really long so I have it wrapped around my spreader bar. It doesn't foul the hook at all and it's super easy to look down and see it whilst sailing. Plus it makes the whole thing totally floatable so if by some weird and bizarre circumstance it does get ripped off in a wipeout it won't be too hard to spot it floating nearby.

actually Mathew, the unit is totally unobstructed by any part of my body. I can easily look down at the unit as I'm sailing to see the screen. It is effectively at waist height and due to the natural leaning back stance of windsurfing the unit is always face up to the sky and pulling in all 4 satellites 100% of the time. I have never had any loss of signal and rarely had a spike when wiping out so I think I'm on a good thing. But you're welcome to your point of view ![]()
