DUE TO LACK OF MONEY I DECIDED TO HAVE A GO AT A SMALL FIN 21.5 CM TO GET ME DOWN THE RUNWAY ON THE SPEED BOARDS CA44
IVE HAD A COUPLE OF DAYS SHAPING IT "WITH NO KNOWLEDGE WHAT SO EVER"
JUST WENT OFF AN AESTHETIC POINT OF VIEW. IT WAS 29CM
I GAVE IT A SPIN YESTERDAY AND SURPRISINGLY IT DIDN'T THROW ME OFF, SPIN OUT, IT FELT REAL NICE, JYBED LIKE A DREAM !! IT IS SET QUITE FAR FORWARD IN THE BOX.
I SAILED IT WITH 5.4 AND A 6.7M AND GAVE IT HEAPS UPWIND AND DOWN THROUGH THE CHOP AND I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IT ....
APART FROM THE WHISTLE !! AT 26 KN THEN IT DROPS OFF IN THE EARLY 30S THEN IS BACK AT 35 36
I DID PUSH IT TO 36.96 I FEEL IT WILL HAVE MORE BUT THE WHISTLE !!
DOES THIS SLOW U DOWN ?
SHOULD I JUST LEAVE IT ?
OR DO I START SANDING... SUGGESTIONS ?
CHEERS LEO
i do have footage and pics of fin but i know theres been a backlash with go pro footage ... so not sure if i should post ... personally i love it ! especially wHen theres a lacK of wind good to get in the straps yours or someone else's;-)
One person has made anti gopro comments. No one is forced to watch your vid.I'll be happy to watch it on this windless and humid Saturday.
I second that ! like they say a picture paints a thousand words. They also keep me sane at work. So go for it!
COMES WITH I MOVIE NOTHING SPESH HELPS YA GET YOUR HEAD AROUND EDITING
MAYBE I SHOULD SAVED THIS FOR A NOTHER POST
WHAT ABOUT MY FIN !!
The fin looks fine but more importantly it performs. I wouldn't mind getting some new fins but all my boards use power box fin boxes.
iMovie is great. I've used it to create my clips. However I'm a beginner with it. It's good to see what you can create with it.
The whistling usually happens from imperfections or uneven areas on the trailing edge.
I had a few imperefections called Select Fins! Most of them would whistle. I sanded the trailing edge to an even razor sharp finish, then sanded some of the sharpness out of them so I wouldn't slice off a limb in a crash. Ofcouse use a sanding block otherwise you follow the imperfection without sanding them out.
THIS IS WHAT SAM SAID ON THE PHONE ..
NOT SURE WHAT U MEAN BY INPERFECTIONS ... THE TRAILING EDGE IS SHARP .. MAYBE NOT RAZOR BUT WOULD MAKE A MESS OF YA IF YOU COPPED IT ![]()
ARE THE IMPERFECTIONS AS U RUN FINGER DOWN THE EDGE OR TRAILING EDGE SIDES ? IE ONE SIDE IS NOT THE SAME AS THE OTHER AS IN PROFILE ?
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
Good on you lelos12345, never know what you can do till you try. Looks like a bloody good effort too. ![]()
In the third photo it shows the layers of fibre which provide a good guide for the basic foil.

U have lost me on a few points.... well you have totally lost me..
but i will look into roving and a glassing wheel
I'd love to get it right Ill do my best and keep ya posted keef ... i know who to come see if i have any probs ;-)
thanks again for support on this mater
these toots and carbon i can get from miter 10 and bunings or do i have to go to a specialty shop?
It looks like a carbon fin, they won't sell woven carbon there. Fibreglass retailers will and the rovings will come off the cloth easily. I use west systems epoxy resin, which dries hard within 24 hrs and cures properly in the ensuing days.
It looks like the trailing edge, about an inch in has some flat spot there which will make it whistle. Pinholes in the finish will also make it whistle. Maybe some more wet rubbing will take that out. If you achieve the same resonance as the plane the plane might blow up, or the fin will crack, one of the two. ![]()
Here's a glimpse of my latest design, a 38 cm kevlar tipped weed burning crab killer!
You can just see the yellow kevlar through the carbon around the tip. After two coats of 2 pack the pinholes are pretty much gone.
daam big fin !! looks very nice mind did u build this from scratch ?
yes i've been inspecting the fin and i can see were i need to do more work with the wet sander and a block.
what would i use to route the box out with sandpaper or a good file?
also do i just keep going till the cracks disappear then start the rebuild
i feel a bit of a nonce but i suppose you have to learn some how.
i am enjoying the process... but wen i crack 40 on it u can say i had a part in that fin ![]()
cheers leo
leo the fin looks great, awesome videos great to see the GPS track played beside the video gives you a different prospective and great to show speed. pepe47 another great looking fin
Hi Leo,
Lots of G10 fins gets minor stress cracks at the base and most of the time they aren't anything to worry about. If I look at my favourite old Goldwings I'll find them for sure.
Sam.
Hi Leo, I have some carbon sheet / rovings kicking around in the garage. You're welcome to some of it. I'm located in Rozelle if your're in the area or if (???) it's windy this weekend I'll be down at botany and will try to rememebr to bring it along.
You can buy the roller in bunnings. I think I have one of those you could borrow, it doesn't get much use at my place.
Des
Hi Leo, the good thing about the tuttle boxes is you only have 2 angles to deal with, whereas the powerbox (sigh) too many to list! If you're worried about a crack opening up, I think what Keef was suggesting would be the best option. Using a router, or a small handheld laminate trimmer.
Mount the base in a vise (using softjaws) with a good straight edge along where you want to trim, you won't need too much. If you don't like the way it turns out you can always get it reboxed (if the cracks are at the base).
And, it looks like Des is there to help out too. ![]()
Des Pepe Sam aus718 thanks for you comments and laymen terms advice
Craig for you concerns and support ![]()
I have found a small router from a friend that will do the job of pulling it back
Des I will take u up on the offer and promise to drop everything back to you asap.
the good thing is the router is in hunters hill so if i can tie the two together that would be fantastic. Des i will PM you after this ![]()
looking forward to bringing it back to its former glory i'm sure i can crack the 40kn with it with a bit more love and a bit less whistle ![]()
thank you all its a fab community very happy to be part of it ..
