Wow, nice work K888. I've loaded the Beta test software, just waiting for Nathan to invite me to the test team. He might not wake up before I head out for todays session so might have to wait till tomorrow to run the test build software.
As expected missed the invite today but now got the new Mike/Nathan Hoolan app installed and officially on the Hoolan test team for the new software. Will upload all raw data (daily/as recorded) to google drive link previously mentioned for those that want to follow but won't give any updates for a while unless anything changes/something significant. Once a decent data set is obtained to compare results will let you know.
Have you tried contacting Massimiliano at Waterspeed re fixes? I've found him reasonably responsive to dealing with issues
A long time ago, I reported the nature of the GPX issues and how to create a single universal GPX.
I followed it up a couple of times, but then lost interest since I don't use the app.
I haven't discussed the speed data because it's only the last couple of days that highlighted an app issue.
Loaded up the Hoolan App and took it out winging today. It recorded my session fine, but pretty limited on water feedback (e.g. max speed, distance) I think that's why I ditched it last time and why I probably will again

ya Stretch, Hoolan on water feedback is super limited at present but Nathan/Lucy all over improving it. However, thats not really the point of this thread. It's whether the accuracy of the Apple Watch(s) logging is any where appropriate for speed sailing. On water feedback from the app is a completely different (but important) topic in my opinion. The awesome motion/mini devices and the new DIY T1 don't/can't see any stats on water but reliably record the session.
The DIY GPS units dominate for on water feedback and its unlikely any watch gonna come close anytime soon as you can't look at your watch whilst sending it. Even stationary the big screen gives way better feedback than the watch.
However, the whole purpose of this discussion is making the device (any) useful for the general user who doesn't have an 'approved device', so getting the best on water feedback is of course what we all want.
Don't think anyone before has requested Windsurf related feedback on Hoolan so is early days. Since the raw data recording appears good, I've suggested adding all the normal GPSTC categories, first post processed on the phone but then on watch. Nathan for sure seems willing........maybe you should join the test team as two sets of data better than one. I don't have your email to forward to Nathan but you can DM me or K888 with your email if you want to join in.
I've been using my Ultra paired with Mini Motion for a while windsurfing now. For winging I just use the watch and don't bother posting to GPSTC. Given the Ultra is not approved for GPSTC, my interest just is in the on water feedback. I'll butt out now, but I do wish you the best in your investigations. Will forward email, happy to contribute files if that helps ![]()
I've written up my Waterspeed observations at logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/apple/waterspeed/
I'd always assumed the repeated speeds were an Apple thing, or perhaps the GNSS chipset.
The first two days of Hoolan data (3 Feb and 4 Feb) did not contain repeating speeds, so I then figured it was a Waterspeed issue.
In today's plot twist, the Hoolan data contains lots of repeating speeds. The spotlight is back on Apple.
FWIW, absence of speed in the FIT files generated by the HealthFit app is due to HealthFit. Nathan has confirmed that the speed data is present in the Apple Health database, so it is the HealthFit app which is ignoring it.
We've also confirmed that the latitude + longitude data from Hoolan is not being modified by the FIT export of HealthFit. The main finding is the HealthFit export is ignoring the speed data from apps such as Hoolan and Waterspeed, but retaining it for standard Apple activities.
First test using new Hoolan beta software seems to have eliminated the time stamp issue..so good work K888 and Nathan. Following suggestion from K888 I've archived the previous data (still accessible on the same google drive link for those interested) and started new goggle sheet with data from the Ultra using Hoolan (beta version 2.4.0(2), boom units, T1 mounted next to Ultra, the average of the DIY units and the Ultra difference to the average of 3 approved units. I'll also try and track number of repeated speeds on this sheet, today I count 1.

What activity or app do you use on your Ultra?

Waterspeed usually. I also have Hoolan, but don't use it much
