The reason I use 110 as lightwind board is pretty simple. Anything bigger feels huge. It can carry a 7.5m sail, which is the largest sail I feel is fun. 110L-63w is about the smallest board I can comfortably uphaul. With the board I can start sailing at about 14knots, under that i choose not to sail.

I can fully relate to the above. My 111 Futura (69 cm wide) with a 7.4 is my a great light-ish wind combo- and fast, but to maximis the light days I bought a 136 litre freerace board. I've only gained an increase in planing ability of around 2 knots- 14 knots down to 12 knots. The trade offs of more gear and that dull big board feel, nearly over rides the slight gain... My hat goes off to anyone who happly owns just one board and 3 sails

Like me.
had a f2 axxis 273l 56w 98lt for the last 10+ years, use it from 7m down to 4.7, on the lake
or the ocean. i pulled the foot strap screws & mount through the deck a couple of sails ago
so am looking for somthing new now while i carnt sail due to injury.
also got a 262 55w 85l axxis a few years back for the 4.7 - 4m days.
i was about 90 95kg mostly, then 70kg & the same gear.

1board 2 sails, minimised my gear to this happy combination. For me, anyway.

Flat Water Sailing - implies light wind, non ?
i did an analysis on the data from the first page of this post
only 3 people said they used Formula type boards
i use a 10 sq meter sail and another said he uses a 10.7
these are obviously very wide boards and plane early

in the 130 to 140 liter category - again only 3 people
these boards were also quite wide at over 80 cm = early planers

about 6 people in the 120 - 125 liter category
most of them were over 90 kilos
some of these boards are around 80 cm - still wide and early planers in flat water

MANY people were in the 110-117 liter range
besides the iSonic 117W these boards are probably NOT very wide and NOT early planers
except these people are lighter on average

under 105 liters - unless you are a featherweight - difficult to be considered flat water boards
freestylers - perhaps

how much wind is flat water in the regions these people are saying they are using these boards ?
what are people's wind minimums - one fellow said 18 knots - that's good wind here
one thing i try to do is - NOT to base myself ONLY on what others are using
example: i use longboards and FreeFormula
few and far between here
in any case - i find this interesting
and have the time to analyze as i come out of hibernation and wait for the snow to melt
had about 15 outings on ice n snow this winter and met a fellow who raced once
that's more sessions than some of my windsurfer buddies get in the summer !!

volume helps early planing a little but plan shape is the main factor here. 15 years ago course slalom boards were same width the 110L boards so yes it is possible for them to be used in 12 knots, i personally start sailing in 12 knots, i weigh a ton & a bit- yes im not planing at times & i pick where i turn around. Sailors like volume because of that feel good safety feeling & for some float in transitions.

I would say that wide does not equal early planing.
I used to have an 80cm slalomboard, which I used with an 8m sail. I then bought a 112L 68cm freestyle board and a 6.9m power sail.
The planing threshold between the two was equal, if not lower for the freestyle kit.

I chose to go the light and small route. But I can still sail in the same winds, although now I am focusing more in manouvres instead of speed.

I am into GPS so the flatwater boards quoted can be for 25-30kts + and with small chop.
I also do general lake sailing so there can be 1m-1.5m rollers.
I've just quoted all my boards. I suspect others have done the same rather than stick specifically to the flat water specs.

my point exactly

for me 25+ knots with chop is
1) not flatwater
2) at the limit of my skills as an average joe windsurfer

hey sue, its getting there ridding me bike again start at the gym in week or two.
I read some snow skiers take a year or more to ski again, better not take that long.
7m on me 98lt would get going in constant 15kts.
6.2 is 20 25kts
5.5m up to 30.
then its 4m ish wave sails & hang on causes its blowin crazy.

early planing doesnt just depend on width no, it's many factors combining. By narrowing width & sail size you decrease drag, makes the board super easy to unstick etc. But if you want to be high average speed on most points of sail, some float when gybing (particularly if racing) & maintain going when lulls/many people upwind of you then the width helps. In constant undisturbed wind they should plane around similar time once it is on the surface. The other area where width helps is try plugging your 8.5m race sail into an 80w then your 68w and see which one goes first, less lift to counter the greater weight & downforce. Volume is the first weapon for early planing, it gets the board to the top of the water. Then rocker & width & rail shape & fin get you moving. A good sailor can substitute technique for volume, much to my dismay over the years of having quite a few of steve allens boards all of which were bloody small on volume for a given length & width.
