Might be a shorter list if you asked "Who is under 60"

Its good to see older windsurfers continuing to enjoy the challenge and enjoyment of windsurfing rather than taking up an easier pastime like lawn bowls or kiting.

Yeah lotofwind, most windsurfers have an IQ well above 60, but I'm not so sure about kiters

He might be 60 but I'm guessing that up until then he was low milage, only ever driven on Sundays.

A better question.
Is there anybody out there who learnt to loop at 30 still looping at 60?

1984? This was 1985, so you would need to find one of the first windsurfers ever to land a loop who was also 30 at the time.

Robby Naish might be a 30 year looper. He's 51 now and landed his first competition loop in 1985.

Boards Magazine did a story on the history of looping years ago. The forward loop was first photographed in July 1987 (Mark Augulo) but was based on the Cheese Roll which was invented by Italian wavesailor Cesare Cantagalli ("cheese" was how the Hawaiians pronounced his name).

The article also mentioned that the first loops landed were push loops with Angus Chater being one of the best proponents. However, when the forward came along, all the top sailors started doing them and the push loop was forgotten (for the time being, anyway).

I am 61 and have been windsurfing for over 30 years. The 2 boys I usually sail with at Gosford are both older than me, one is 69 and the other is 68. All are still as fanatical as ever about the sport.

However, we have also lately discovered SUP surfing and are now actively doing that as well when conditions are right. A great adjunct to sailing.

Wind = sailing
No wind + waves = SUP surfing

ha, thats funny, i joined about 8yrs ago, im 33 now, yep a lot of old people windsurf, not many younger people, its a shame, a younger crew would definitely be nice, might also mean topics such as politics, agro the puppet and vaccinations aren't considered heavy, ha,,,,,,,,,,,,but its still better than kiting, on the central coast, most of the people i sail with are oldish, still passionate, dedicated, nice people, some sail really well,, like matt and micky, there still going well for their age

Matt & Micky..they're spring chickens!

Congrats on getting back to the sport and a tip to make it easier is to rig the sail properly because i can see your sail in pic aint right.go online to sail makers tips to rig it right make the sail feel lighter and handle better..

Xtreme I'm sure you are right about the rigging, from the photo would you suggest more down haul, out haul or both?.

Cheers Kevin

Well you can tell by the batten tensioners it isn't a new sail. Sails from the early 90s didn't have a loose leach, so it might not be as badly rigged as you first think, certainly if that was a more modern sail it would be well under downhauled.
It certainly wouldn't be a bad idea to try more downhaul, then adjust outhaul for required power.

Thanks, that's what I will do, it's probably not far off the best I'm gonna get, given its age 1994?

Grew up in the whole puberty blues scenario on the northern beaches of Sydney and it wasnt until I discovered windsurfing did I realise what fun was.
Most of the guys I grew up with are either dead or boring as **** and just go to the pub or have no life.
Same as Hardie, mid fifties and having a blast!!!
LG!!!!!!

Have to agree with Hardie & KA43.
Somehow fit work in with tennis twice a week, golf (9 holes) twice a week on way to work,
a bit of MTB bike riding - & windsurfing if the wind blows.
60+ and kids are waiting for me to grow up

Oh yeah - & shed time is good! LG

This reminds me of my favorite song. My wife call this my theme song and she is not completely wrong!

In the insightful words of Jimmy Buffet:

I'm growing older but not up
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
So let the winds of change blow over my head
I'd rather die while I'm living then live while I'm dead

This poem about getting old was recently sent to me. Some of you might enjoy it.

"I have outlived my pecker." A Poem - by Willie Nelson

My nookie days are over,
My pilot light is out.
What used to be my pride and joy,
Is now my water spout.
Time was when, on its own accord,
From my trousers it would spring.
But now I've got a full time job,
To find the friggin thing.
It used to be embarrassing,
The way it would behave.
For every single morning,
It would stand and watch me shave.
Now as old age approaches,
It sure gives me the blues.
To see it hang its little head,
And watch me tie my shoes!!

Here's a good example.
Windsurfed from aged 50 until he was 80 and then took up kitesurfing.
Died on the water kiting aged 88.

What a way to go I could only wish...

Good on you Kevin.

re: gym - large weights
At 54, it doesn't work for me any more. Small weights, a lot of repetitions is better.
Better still, just windsurf as much as you can, and it will build up over time.
I significantly reduced the lower back pain that was killing me for ages.

That's one of the saddest things I've ever read, worse than a puppy getting killed story,,,,,, I hope I don't have any of his genes.

Salt of the... wow.

You need more dowhaul.

60+... you know I was just saying to my wife today I'd like to be , maybe, 26 physically. I think that was probably the peak for my body. But mentally... as I am right now. And I'm sure you feel the same. There's no way I'd swap this mental state for the one I was in at 27.

You can do this easy for another decade. I do another sport that's much harder on the body and there are guys in their 50's that are tough, you know? 60+ for windsurfing is easy. I think Agase and Slater and even Schumacher (has he woken up yet?) have shown that 40 is the new peak. It's surprising how much you still have in you.

I hope I'm like you in 20+ years.
