O.K getting back into windsurfing after a 20year brake. Kit has changed a bit so I'm a bit lost. I'm trying to get away with one board and sail to start with so I'm thinking the new starboard Carve IQ 151 and a 2018 severne Overdrive M1 8.6m.
Im 90kg 6'7 and was a good sailer 20years ago. What wind range do you think this will cover?

Where will you be sailing?
How big is the board?
Thats a HUGE sail to be starting with!!
Why did you choose that size? And cammed?

With you weight and proper tuning of the sail (downhaul and outhaul) I'd think this combo would be OK for 11 to 16 kts. If you added a 7.5 to your quiver you, could then stretch this to about 19kts. The limiting factor would be the size of your board in chop generated in higher wind conditions

Carve iq 151
when i I used to sail a lot 7m was the most used sail I had and I didn't bother going out under force 4, now I reckon there's more sub force 4 days then over force 4 so went big. Love cams all my old sails had 5 or more and was guessing to would widen the wind range to have a few.
prince Edward island Canada, open ocean but there's lots of sheltered bays etc if the waves get to big outside.

That's kinda the wind range I was hoping for, as for the chop/board problem, not to worried about this as I can find sheltered bays and some of my favourite days out were when it was howling with big messy chop on my old F2 lightening race board.
Was actually thinking about the Phamton 377l but price was a bit much

Cool, i see the size now, sorry.

Well the 151 will offer enough float.

I have Mistral EQ2 and love it so i hope that your F2 is still in working order for you.
I use twin cam 8.2 on my RB & light wind board

7.8 is often a very popular sail because of its wind range.

I agree with what John340 said about the range but dunno about smaller than 8.6 though.

I am 100kg and have trouble holding down my 135L when 7.5 is properly powered up. 150L and a 90kg bloke in approaching 20kn - it will be railing up like crazy. 150L is a seriously light wind board

Also sails are far less powerful than 20yrs ago, I'm not a racer but seems almost 1m bigger sail for same wind now?

Thanks,
back when I sailed a lot my 267cm 44cm wide Salomon Board was considered normal and we would never think of going bigger than 6.8m on it so going to something shorter and twice as wide with a 8.6m is going to be interesting.

winters here now so it might be a while before it gets warm enough to try it, (sea needs to melt) can't wait

It's not to late for me to go for the 131 or 141, can you up uphaul the 135? Not planning on needing to but always nice to know you can float home if the wind dies as I'll be mainly out by myself.

"carveiq" - name confused me - knew of the carve and the atom iq, but now there is a carveiq ...
the 151 is 84 cm wide with a 48 cm fin - that's a serious floater
as i am a lazy planer - i would say 13 to 18 knots with an 8.6 and 90 kilos ... about
here in Montreal, Quebec, Canada - after that it gets choppy
that's when i prefer the 7.x sail and about 70 cm wide board
have used a 7.x (7.0 - 7.5) sail on a board like yours, but it gets bouncy
did not slice nor fly over chop
welcome back to the greatest water sport in Canada and Australia
why would you discontinue for 20 years ??
and it ain't winter here yet !! we had almost 20 degrees today and same for the next few days !!!

20 degrees in Quebec!! Not fair. Do you go out on the river? Last time I was there was for skiing and the river was frozen solid so didn't look to inviting.
-2 here right now, that's winter to me. Was looking out to sea today, conditions looked perfect but it felt very chilly. My kit is going to arrive in march, sea will be solid still, hoping late april I will be able to get out. I used to like every on Hayling Island on the south coast of England (birth place of windsurfing) if you want to see chop that's the place to go.

my job took me away from windsurfing, I was a Pro cyclist and just didn't have time for both.

A good rule of thumb is that minimum volume you can uphaul is your weight plus 20kgs. 135 litres easily satisfies this criteria. My weight varies from 85 to 95kgs. I can uphaul my 112 litre board. I also have a 137 litre board

For only one board and one sail at 90kg - I'd say a 115 to 140 litre with a 7m to 8m max. Or around 70 to 82 cm wide.

8m will start to feel overpowered at 20 knots. Will work great in the 15-18 range.

A Mistral 137 at 82 cms wide and a 7.5 KA Koncept or 7.9m KA Race sounds about right.

Impact or flotation vest, will help with flying the cam sail when water starting.

I'd get the 131 instead of the 151. You will grow out of the 151 very quickly and the 131 would be a better light wind board when you get the inevitable smaller board latter down the track.

Money doesn't sound an issue, so this is a really good windsurfing kit, but be sure you are sailing in a place with steady wind, a 8.6, 3 cams is quite heavy to handle and is not fun in a big gusty wind spot. Spot where it blow 10 kts,-15kts will be good, but if it's 10kts - gusting to 18-20 kts with peaks at 22kts like where I sail, you will find that quiver very hard to handle. As I was mentioning, you don't seem to have money issue, so this is a perfect light wind for a fairly advance sailor, 151L / 8.6 overdrive, but since you are an athlete you might cope with it better than others. You will get going in very light wind. Than you next board will be in the 120L range I guess...so you are going for a 2 board quiver to cover for your light wind range. If noney is not an issue that's good, if it is, than reconsider a 130L and a 7.5, you will not get going in 11-12 kts..maybe at 13 kts, specially if you are not good at pumping a sail

BUT below 13 kts, to get going it's a lot of money, for each not you want to go...you need big heavy gear!! ;-)

again if money is not an issue, go for Carbon Boom in that size, and add some Adjustment outhaul(pulley's system to adjust you outhaul while sailing)
Have fun.

Yes it is unusual to be that warm this time of year in Quebec, kind'a screwing up the wind pattern on the Great Lakes also...cheers.

The StarBoard Futura is a good board too. Lighter and less volume but very similar widths. A higher performer too.
On th SB site I noticed that the free ride boards all had pictures with Severne NCX sails.
And the Futura is a little more expensive.
Maybe you could get away with a smaller board and use the long board when you need to get out but there's only a little wind. The 8.6 will make the RB fly.
Do you still have the F2? If not find one! Save one!

I thought about carbon for the hugh price increase it didnt seem worth it, and chances of breaking it while remembering how to sail are probably high.

If you are worried about breaking stuff you should get an easier sail to start with. Go NCX as they come in the big sizes and will allow you to sail much easier than a cam sail. They have huge wind range/stability from 7 battens and will be so much easier to fly after you drop it in the water which you will do often.
You have a great journey ahead so be sure of your equipment choice to assist you not hinder.
The shop might have a cheap second hand or old model sail that's smaller and better for the initial beginning. You don't want to put a hole in the M1 because fixing it wil be a bugger.
Happy times after the thaw
