I'm 88 kg and have a 95 ExciteRide that is pretty old. I've been dicking around in small waves on it. Its better than nothing and my custom wave boards from the 80's. I bought a 6.5 NCX to do the LOC but just couldn't get on the plane and pulled out at half way. I reckon it was 15-16 knots at the start. A week or so ago I tried a 104 MagicRide and definitely would have been able to get on the plane with it. Gybes nicely and much lighter than the ExciteRide. I'm going to buy the MagicRide but probably should get a dedicated wave board again, not the least for the short fins.
I have just dropped some weight. There are still days of 15-16kn with zero swell, why go schlogging out hoping for a wavesail, when u can plane on freeride stuff? ![]()
Besides it is also for a LOC plan (one day... sigh...)
since you are a "wave sailor" with some weight ...
what would YOU use in 15-16 knot winds with NO swell ??
BTW for the nay-sayers it is fine.
16-18kn and my 98kg and it was easy planing. Very easy
I use 'Windsurf Calculator' and 'Windsurf Buddy' on my android phone..find them fairly accurate.. They both show around 18kn for 98kg and 7.5 sail...given your experience and as you have proved 16-18kn is not surprising. Did you need to pump to get planing?
Quite different than my technique that is BTW pretty useless.... With this much pumping you could get going with 2-3kn... Maybe even without a sail.
