Be really careful with a painful cast. If too constrictive it can cause further issues. Get it checked out if concerned!
Yes I asked my chiro about that. It's intermittent and if I fiddle around with how the arm is positioned I can ease it a bit.
I've padded the sharpest bits I can get to with cotton wool . After the first change of cast I don't really want another. I got the first one wet. ![]()
It took 3 of them 30 mins to saw and hack it off ( it was well made) and they had to hold my wrist the whole time so the bones wouldn't move..

I'd hate to have a full leg caste, ![]()
And how did you get the first cast wet?
I trusted the 'waterproof ' arm cover too much..It went into the water and then I noticed the bag had water in it and the cast was dripping.
I used a hair-dryer and it seemed to dry it ok but I think they thought it might still be damp inside.
The waterproof cover is more water resistant, splash proof..![]()
I'm having pressure problems with the cast so I'm going to see if I can get in to be seen earlier. The original surgeon said 5 - 6 weeks.
6 weeks is due this Friday but I'm due for removal next Monday.
I don't want to put up with this pain longer than I need to.
The bone feels OK.

Good to hear bone feels good, thought you were going to say you got it wet when you tried windsurfing one handed!

The day I did it the wind was pretty nuclear. I wanted to lift the sail in the air and try and walk in but there's not much you can do with one hand...![]()
Hopefully the horrible painful cast will be off tomorrow..![]()

My personal rule for any major injury is when you feel you are 100% healed, pain free and ready to go- wait another week. Nothing worse than aggravating an almost-healed injury.

Yes .I'm still bushwalking ( easy stuff) and hoping I don't slip! I've got a pole for backup.
At least I don't feel like I'm missing much. The conditions have been uninspiring for sailing. Murky water and yuck wind..
The cast is off now the hardwork starts..

Bio-Oil is great for getting skin condition back quickly.
After looking at those pics....
I think they call that "Tyrannosaurus Rex" arm syndrome.
Perfect arm grip position to progressing to windwinging, the natural progression for windsurfers to escape the ice age extinction.![]()

I haven't looked at this thread for a while. Cripes it's got a life of its own..![]()
The arm is starting to look normal. All the scaly stuff washed off after a couple of days. It's still swollen but heaps better.
The whole arm was stiff and solid so I've got to get the fascia moving and I've got a bit of movement from doing all the exercises..
I still can't turn on a lightswitch ,hold a fork etc but I managed to use the computer mouse a bit today.![]()
I'm certainly appreciating all the little improvements. ![]()

A jacuzzi jet applied carefully can do wonders.

Pics from today 10 days after the cast was taken off.
I might need to go to a herbalist and get some natural anti imflammatories. I can't take oral ones . I'm icing it regularly but the swelling is making rehab harder.
Straight out of the cast

Today-

Ice is actually very effective in reducing swelling, on for 15-25 min., off for 1 hr., and then back on ice. There is a topical antinflamatory cream, prescription only in US called diclofenac generic name (www.drugs.com/mtm/diclofenac-topical.html) that is very effective, used on a knee that was shattered and put back together with 18 screws, 3 metal plates, and 2 bone grafts, and was really swollen compared to your wrist.
But if you want something really natural, try Arnica gel/cream just make sure it is 7%, I have not used it for swelling but that is listed as one of the uses, works good for forearm and elbow joint pain.
So I guess we will see you at LG in February ![]()
Maybe ..if the water quality is better and I get a leave pass ....![]()
be really careful, if you re-injure the wrist before it heals and strengthens completely it could set you back a lot longer. It could take you a year or more to get back to where you were before the accident.

Yes. Although it was ok on the day my hand has been very painful since. I rang the chiro today and he said it's probably inflamed after the use as it hasn't been used for so long. Getting into the wetsuit and gear , rigging , sailing , unrigging , getting out of the gear etc etc is a big day for it!
I've got to ice my hand, go easy on the rehab for a while and not sail till it's 100%..
Cripes I hope I can do some decent sailing before a year..
It's turned me off shallow weedy water..
Need to exercise it in controlled ways, grip trainers, hand sized rubber "squeeze" ball, flexion exercises, before going to multi directional workouts like windsurfing. When I shattered my knee 4+ years ago neither of two different PTs gave me advice on how to strengthen it or stretch it, had to invent/make a rig to stretch it past 90 degrees (90 degrees was good enough for PT!), and had to remember from a PT 20 years ago to start exercising right knee by itself (never with left knee). Finally after 4+ years was able to do full out backpacking trips (with 35-40 lb packs) last month for first time since accident, with several 15 mile one day backpacks out of the Rocky mountains, with no knee pain or swelling, still hard for me to believe! But could have done it sooner if a PT had given me proper advice.

But maybe the extra year or so delay in getting back to backpacking was good, had a torn meniscus and a bunch of tendons and ligaments on top of the shattered bone. We heal slower as we get older too.
I've been seeing a physio plus chiro. I thought that could gave been a bit over the top but it's working well.
The physio is mainly range of movement, strength and some massaging to get the fascia moving again ( the whole wrist/ arm was like cement ).
The chiro worked on getting the whole body working ok again. E.g due to the heavy cast and the way I did early rehab my shoulder and neck were involved when I moved my hand. After his exercises I can now isolate the hand.
I handled the sailing ok on the day .It was sore the next day but stated to settle. I got over motivated to get it back to normal and build up strength. I started doing heaps of ball work plus weeded for 30 mins solid.
Now I know why they only had me doing a bit at a time..
Oh well lesson learnt. I'll take it easier and back off if it gets inflamed too badly.

Avoid getting any inflammation if possible, and if you do get it back down asap with ice or meds, inflammation is your enemy in recovery!
