I actually did that after gluing it down , two minds alike !
When squeegeeing the glass over the top the cork was sucking the resin up like a sponge . It is amazing how porous cork is even though it looks relatively solid . I think the cork itself sucks up resin .
When i did tests before diving in i was amazed how tough resin soaked cork is . ( impact tough not tensile strong ) .
Bagging wetted glass over the cork would be soo much lighter , but i suppose you would loose the solid ( and heavy ) as a rock sandwich material .
I still think bagging cork would be perfect . Mabee next time ?
If the cork sucks resin then if you had bagged glass on it may act as a bleeder type material and suck to much resin out of the glass, justca thought.
So you sealed your cork with epoxy let it dry and it still sucked resin?
I think you should have a look on swaylocks forum guys were doing lots with balsa as a sandwich maybe they might have cork sealing ideas. I know they seal their EPS foam before glassing.
The technique i used was because i wanted to see the cork .
If i was just using the cork as a sandwich medium i would have used a squeegee and coated it with a resin Q cell paste mix . It would have filled the voids and stopped the resin seeping in . Just doing this all things the same i think i would have saved 1kg . Also i had to use straight resin for the filler coat . It would have been lighter and easier to sand if again i used Qcell .
I would estimate still using my primitive lay up method using Qcell in many stages ( including resining the top cork down ) , i may have saved up to 2kg.

Hey Imax looks like it came out awesome! Stoked with how good the cork came out! You are right! Beauty is worth the effort!!
The board had its first outing today. 15 kts , 9.4 two cam . Totally rapped , I could not be happier. Blending three boards worked great. I know that it's going to sound like a new board advert , but it does go faster , smoother in the chop , turns better and planes just as easily as my favourite Xcite ride. It is however considerately more wobbly to uphaul but doable when the wind drops. I didn't at all notice the weight so I could only imagine how much better a lighter bagged version would feel. Shape wise I wouldn't change a thing.
Cant wait to use a less whopper of a sail.
One happy camper ![]()

Great to hear mate, now the test is durability.
But I wouldn't mind betting it will outlast most production boards.
Great job Imax.... Beautiful finish.
I will have to be careful with the resin on mine... Think Ill use microballoon/resin mix to seal it off.
Did you wet the glass on the board or did you squeegee it on a table first?

Yes I wetted on the board to get rid of the air bubbles to see the cork. If its going to be painted then I would definitely wet on the bench. Definitely seal it first and let set .
