Ok. So, what is your favourite? And ONLY ONE. No reason or explanation. Mine... Fanatic Gecko.
As of a few days ago, the 2021 M_Oz Customs Fire98
How much is a 2021 M_Oz Customs Fire98 going to set me back? Around 4 grand? I could buy half the boards on my highly esteemed top 100 list for that sort of cash ![]()
OMG - half that.
F2 Sunset slalom v1 circa 1986 was ahead of its time. Back when all round sailing meant speed, jump gybes, full planing duck gybes and carving 360s. Comboed with the cambered Gaastra slalom foil 6.2 which could be easily duck gybed- sweet combo. Mistral Hookipa was verytidy too- and the f2 lightning/ mistral equipe were very functional.
Starboard Evo was a pivotal moment in wave design. As were the Fish. Probably deserve a bit more credit.
One man's meat, another man's poison.
Many moons ago I subscribed to a guitar magazine which did a survey of readers to determine the most popular band at the time. The winner was Oasis.
At the same time they also asked what was the worst band. Winner? Oasis.

This doesn't work for me at all.
is this the best selling boards of all time, in terms of numbers made or sold? (In which case, who cares, because the market is not what it was - so better modern designs will sell in fewer numbers... )
I suspect this list is already a bit old, because where are the more recent classic designs like the Starboard Kode? Some good modern brands don't even feature.
The boards that came out over the decades also suited the average sailor's ability of that time. So certain boards found their middle-market place - even when they proved to be a bit rubbish in skilled hands, or useless for beginners.
My own disappointment with this chart is that it leaves out many of my favourite boards - but I guess a lot of people will feel that too.
Most of us will also not want to go back to any of the more popular or 'best' boards listed here, because board shares have moved on so much. Who would want any Mistral board now?
So this list is mostly about nostalgia.
There is not a single board on there which I would like to own now. (OK, except maybe the Starboard Hypersonic, or the JP freestyle board, hahah. )
if you want to talk to which boardS were ahead of their time, then that's a different discussion.
Ricardo Campello doing a great job, just a few days ago, sailing this Naish Hawaii 8'10" waveboard circa 1991-93 (cost him US$30). Somewhat similar to Mistral Screamer/Stinger shape (albeit more wave oriented for sure)...might even be Harold Iggy/Rick Naish templated inspired (shaped by Stevie B.) like the latter earlier boards. The "nut on the tiller" is always important. There was a video on facebook but they took it down lest people just buy the old gear and recycle it instead of the new Naish gear.

I gotta go with the Astro Rock. Instructors always said, "If you can't learn to jibe on an Astro Rock, you can't learn to jibe, period."
