Well, after 8 races done on the weekend (12 min each), I learned some things.....

The 800 wing (Starboard) is not a good choice unless it's 20+ wind. I also rigged a 7.8 (slalom sail) instead of the 9.0 HGO which was terrible mistake (saturday only). I was too confident of the forecast.

Regarding upwind. I had good speed in general, but not the best angle. I mean there are moments I can trim the stance right, rail the Board, ride a little higher to get the windward rail without smashing the big chop.... But I couldn't mantain it, just for some moments.

I think one of the tips you gave me Is to straighten the legs, specially the back one. And not so sure I did it right

We were about 9 boards, with 3 of them just starting so the fleet was really 6.
I finished 3rd.... the last few races I was a bit closer to the top 2 guys, who were faster upwind

Settings for sunday:
1000 wing
-2 shim (remember I have the old tail wing that's 3.7?)
9.0 sail
Mast base back
82 kg

Wind around: 15 knots
Big chop

Maybe the best shim for the conditions was a -1.5 or -1.0
Downwind I had no trouble, I can go fully powered sending it ;)

Now back to training, and some gym too! (I'm pretty tired)

here's a google photos album (there are mixed categories)

I would use the 900 wing at all times if i was you, and slalom sails should only be used if you dont have a foil race sail small enough for conditions, ie 25 knots. Whatever shim you have for the rear stabiliser, try to make sure you are at least 1* above neutral. Mast base back as you did and keep working on "crabbing" sideways upwind when overpowered (pointing up into the breeze), then returning to a faster line when the wind drops away. Dont bear away too much in the lulls though as you will lose the gains made in the gusts. Saturday was very gusty so i rigged the 9m HGO as where i was racing was likely to have a lot of lulls, and i just held on and pointed up in the gusts.

I'm not sure I understood this... 1 degree above neutral?
I have the old stab from the original SB foil (black fuse with no shims)
So as Berowne said it's supposed to be 3.7 degrees, while the actual one is -2 degrees compared to mine
When I use the -2 shim (of the new fuse), I'm actually just like as someone on the new one is using the 0 shim, am I right?

I felt that going upwind, with 15 knots and big chop, the nose of the board when railing it to windward, went down
Probable because of the wind itself pushing it down as I railed it. So putting more stab angle (lift) would help.

Thanks for your tips! I have learned that the 9.0 can be handled up to 20 knots

Yep, i have the same rear stabiliser, so i use the -1 shim at all times.

@aeroegnr Yeah that's exactly what's going on. Great footage and recovery, gave me second-hand ptsd. The inconsistency of the thing is what's driving me crazy.

Today I went out with the IQFoil setup, +0.5 shim as was recommended. ZERO breaches or ventilation when upwind in both straps.

I don't think I am getting max VMG by any means but I did practice just putting lots of toe pressure instead of heel pressure when I felt myself riding high. It pushed me a little less upwind but kept me from breaching while adjusting height, and I aimed to try to miss the chop while railing. Still a lot to practice and tweak on my form but I figure I would share that.

VMG pushing less upwind to keep from breaching is probably better than VMG in the water from a breach...will keep playing and listening from advice from other IQFoilers.

You have got to be stoked for that reasource, you are in the mecca for IQ in the states, other than Miami it's San Fran right? In my area (south east atlantic coast) I am helping spread the word that foiling windsurfing is in the olmpics. I have yet to see the gear in person.

Yeah, it's cool when I can run into them. Their regular training times are hard for me personally to get to without taking vacation, but I may do that soon for an upcoming race. At least when they sail on other days I can be humbled when the pros show up .

It's nice to have something where you know all the equipment is the same, it's more the rider.
