Large can be dangerous if your feet get twisted IN during a fall.
Tall with narrow spacing is safe on shorter boards...like under 225cm.
Only toes thru is safest, which allows the heel to pivot the foot out.
Just like windsurfing.

I think another thing that might help, (Hard to be sure until someone collects the stats) is footstraps placed near the edge so your heel wraps around the rail. That way if the board rolls leeward and you go windward, you have that extra bit of ankle rotation before things might lock up. Only toes in and they lever out with the heels on the rail. Hold onto the boom though. Foils with downward pointed tips are reassuring in this sort of crash.
Just like slalom boards.
Racers set up like this but even freeride foil boards can have outboard footstrap locations.
(I notice not much has changed re position of straps, mast track and tuttle box freeride / slalom)

more guys are going full strapless around here, (I can't.... I really need the locked front foot feeling)
Jean Lou Colmas (on the pic) goes full speed strapless, he says booties are enough to get a good grip and strapless allows the most precise tuning (foot position)

WTF, I just noticed the boosting kite foiler! A windsurfer's worst nightmare
