Heard that they actually had to run a whole lot of electricity and communication lines over the hill - which took time and money - which they actually did - though by the time they did it .....
It was too late and by then Snapper was going to get the conditions anyway to finish it!?
The first comp had some probs but I'm glad it's on. I never had much time for comps or pro surfing until it hit the Tele. I love it now. It's a bit like a test match ever changing over a few days, dramas such as the champ making a complete goose of himself on live Tele. What a tosser. Can't wait for bells.
Its our turn soon. Lucky us. Can we keep the professionals on the East coast?
Please...
Pretty pretty please....
Cmon drip! Might be nice to the pros get smashed by some 15 foot Margs bombs Hey. Every cloud has a silver lining.
moving snapper to dbah would of been easy its a kilometre away, fully easy lgitimate solution, dbah may be one state away but its closer than burleigh and currumbin. its probably closer than kirra to be honest....im not sure how much the government puts in to these events, however judging by the amount of people in the area i reckon they got a fair return along with all the local buisnesses. people would still be spending their money within a kilometre of where the comp was held and i dont think anyone could say they had missed out.. id definatly say surfing would of gained, the viewer would of gained and the sponsers would of gained. i know snapper has an ampitheatre but i reckon you would get a pretty good view of dbah, off the beach, rockwall, top carpark, hill outside the surfclub etc etc
im still calling dbahgate.
pffft.....you just don't get it...its about money,,,i don't know how explain it any more ...**** even the stupid kid next door understands...how about moving all your major sporting/music festivals to the east coast...its just ****ing stupid....like your reply![]()
They have held it at dbah in previous years so not sure why an issue now?
Everyone thinks of dbah as on the goldy anyway
Although i don't agree with Chrispys aggressive/annoyed tone, he is correct in saying it would have never happened at Dbah. QLD government did pay a substantial amount to the organisers. For them to move the event onto NSW soil just was not a viable possibility, both technically, emotively and i think legally
My issue i have is the same as Raz. The adds non stop online, the product placement is getting crazy. Yes i understand its a business, they are there to sell products but it does seem to have taken a step further down the business model and less about the surfing model.
Not much can be done if the surf is crap. The window was long enough, this year they were just unlucky. I watched the kids yesterday at Trigg point deal with absolute wind blown crap. Its just how our sport can go sometimes..![]()
I did not though that the tour wasn't allowed to go to D'bah
I always thought it was a backup venue.
So it's a case of run it at Snapper or cancel
I thought in previous years like 2009 Dbah was used!
It may very well have been in previous years. Possibly the QLD government hasn't contributed those years, or they had a better working relationship between States..
Best. Interview. Ever
Then Freddy P basically caught nothing in his heat and threw a tanty and ollied into a rock on the way in. Epic
Gabby sounds as drunk as a skunk in that interview...bizarre
Typical Brazo arrogance right there folks. Someone give that kid a hug. Stop crying Medina ![]()
Couple of years back I was loving the webcasts but it all seems to have become a bit of a spank lately. To my mind it all comes down to the dollar, when the circuit was funded by surfing companies the content was built for surfers, now it's funded by multinational telcoms they (arguably so) want their pound of flesh and the content has suffered accordingly.
Unfortunately the global downturn has seen those surfing companies bleeding coin and they just can't sell enough $200 pairs of boardies to keep the whole shebang afloat. Probably doesn't help that tightwads like me are content with $10 boardies from best and less.
Personally I wouldn't be too upset to see the ship sink. Might mean less easily influenced kooks attracted to the fold and if the circus continues down its current path it's not one I want tickets to at any rate.
Start bailing WSL.
I don't get it?
Why wouldn't ya want to see the worlds best surfers surfing live all over the world. I agree some of the commentary is annoying but if ya hate it that much just turn the sound off and use the heat analyser. Looking forward to bells and margs leg this year hope they get some decent swell.

maybe i fired from the hip a bit early....... i do want to watch it and in fact im stoked that i can, i just want it to be held in good/epic waves where the worlds best surf good waves. With the amount of money invested and made by all parties involved it has to be only beneficial to everyone to wait for pumping waves
Disclaimer: I bet a minimum/maximum of 50 bucks on heats throughout the event I cannot bet against the aussie lads even if i know they will lose.
disclaimer: aussies very rarely lose heats when snapper is 4-6 foot
(if you do footy tipping you will understand, i pity st kilda supporters for this very reason
I would love to see Margs 4 times+ overhead - I mean properbly big - & clean as a whistle.
No going right or shifting to the Box as I found that a bit repetitive & hard to judge from a competition point of view. Just good old fashion big Mainbreak lining up to the Rivermouth al-la Curren.
It would be interesting to see how the Top 34 go in those conditions, I'm sure they would rip given the right boards - but how many of them would have them in the board bag. I'd be backing JJF & Mick in conditions like that.

The simple fact is that Dbah is in NSW. Not Qld, even though right next door. These type of events need to have some rather serous contracts drawn up between sponsors, councils and the organisers and media may have talked it up (moving it as an option) but i don't believe it would have happened. It would be like the Cottesloe council sponsoring and having a event like the Sculptures by the sea but then it actually being set up at Trigg beach. Why would one council pay for another to benefit. The QLD government had sponsored the comp and wanted the event run on QLD soil and thats why they extended the waiting period instead of moving..
But saying that there was lots of right ups and quotes from people regarding the move and the legality/viability..

About three years ago they set up 2 comp sites one at snapper the other at d-bah and had two small sites set up at Greenmount and Kirra.

Im not saying it has never happened or might not happen again in other years to come. Just this year gone i doubt very much they would have allowed it. Id say after the issues this year they will write it into the contracts to be able to be moved though![]()
Ok so its not a credible source. Shame that would be interesting to know.. ![]()
queensland government and council were on our news saying it was not going to happen. yeh mac it did happen a few year back.
they did not go into the finer details but it really did come down to investment dollars from the qld and gcccc.
razzonator your response gave me a big laugh, cheers. but seriously how many times does one thing need to be explained to you? or are a bit like jb and his sharks and only want to hear what you like?
the wink one is for you jb![]()
razz I also agree I would have loved to watch it at dbah.....
oh they can move the site...to kirra for example as they did last year....because it is in Queensland![]()
+1 for Dooma and Snake to come back, those two were a crackup. I haaaaate the commentators now, even Ronnie Blakey, who used to be pretty honest, is a WSL kissa$$ now. ![]()

Bearing in mind that all the blokes doing the commentary are doing it to earn their crust-Ronie's a mate and very candid in person-so they have to toe the corporate line-unfortunate reality of the new fuggged up WSL paradigm. Case in point-the interview the morning after with Medina after his dummy spit-total case of cleansing the World Champ and his tarnished image. Transparently sickening.

+1. I reckon margs got a bad rap last year coz they only had small south swells. A big macking west swell would be quite interesting. It has a lot more grunt then it looks when it's big. Would be a lot better then watching waist high snapper anyway.

And I reckon you are understating it. I have surfed six foot Snapper and it is a cuddly teddy bear compared to six foot Margies - and at six foot you can go right at Margies so it's not even proper Margies. I mean I was in a twin fin at Snapper. Try that at Margies.
Solid Margies is very very grunty. In my experience, none of the East Coast waves match up in grunt factor to the west coast, but I guess you just need to look at a swell map to understand that.
I wonder what size board the uber freaks of sponno world would surf if Margies hit 10-12, let alone 15?

At least on a bigger board they could put more stickers on it!!![]()
new moon april 18 not saying much more but the old surgeons table at mainbreak will be looking good. historically your looking at a 2.5-3metre swell...may just get what we all want too see.
and yeah drip 6foot mainbreak is very very different to 6foot snapper
gladiators ready![]()
