I did the move from Perth to Coolum about 3 years ago... Mate you will not regret it!! I've had so many good quality waves here than I ever did in Perth and surfing in boardies most the year sealed the deal even more.

Nah mazdon no gig lined up, it's just me and the missus ( no kids ) packing up and getting the hell outa dodge and starting up somewhere else. It's a big move for us.
There are things we can do but nothing lined up, so we are expecting a lean period for quite a while but can deal with that.

We visited briefly and just loved the place, but when I say briefly it was a couple of days and a flat spell (the Goldy was also flat at the time, even D-bah when we arrived there ) so the surf is a bit of an unknown from firsthand experience, but it would be hard to be as bad as Perth.

Thats why I'm trying to pick peoples brains re: the surf ............

I'm a big believer in "making things happen" by just rocking up, not being picky, using positive energy and of course hard work to get in the position you want to be in. Sounds like you are as well, and half way already.

kiteboy Dave in the kitesurfing forums basically did as you are talking about a couple of years ago and whilst not working in his professional field at first, found some positives and lessons from the other jobs he was doing and writes (from what I can tell off the forums) that he is enjoying things out that way immensely - have a look for his thread or send him a pm - seems like a friendly enough chap.

I spent about a month June - July there years ago, as well as occasional visits cyclone season. As drip says, doesn't usually have the punch we are used to from WA indian ocean swells, but I still scored epic beachies Coolum/perigian stretch, moffats is world class and got that pumping, and countless smaller headlands that were "average" sunny coast but would have been super fun perth days...
all the best with the move.

Moffats is my go to wave over there.

world class might be talking it up a bit, but it's good fun.

I really enjoyed the Sunshine coast when I was there July 2009. The roads are good, nice beaches & epic mountains up behind. From a holiday sense, accomodation & food is cheap (outside Noosa). I got lucky with a big July swell & not so lucky losing a fin on rocks at Kirra before heading North. I missed a day surfing when I arrived getting my board fixed but enjoyed checking out the mountains.

This was on the news the night I arrived

This was the reefie 2 mins walk away from out accommodation the arvo while my board was getting repaired. Enjoyed surfing it at 1/2 size on my own the day after. The sandbanks out the back of the rivermouth were double overhead long rights, 3 or 4 sections with like 2 guys out. Moffats was going off apparently. But I didn't see it, I was drinking beer filming this.
Warning for you sensitive types, video contains boogers, but clearly displays fun looking waves too

We went to Noosa after a couple of nights in Caloundra, arrived at lunch. I went straight to TeaTree, missus went shopping & I had a great time getting long rides with a couple of barrel sections & walking back. I grabbed some beers & filmed this vid that arvo, swell had dropped but still really fun. Next morning was waist high, heaps of longboards fully dominating.

But anyway the missus & I were on an exploritory mission considering moving over back then. The work situation was ultimately the deciding factor for us & we have since found a place we are very happy with. But if you can find a way to get by on the Sunshine coast or Northern NSW somewhere you will find yourself in a beautiful part of the world. Best of luck to ya m8

Dunno how good Noosa gets, but it was very good the day I arrived. I think I was lucky with timing, arrived after a few days of good swell & went out after lunch. But anyway, you can see in my video its not very crowded & looking like a lot of fun

Noosa is worse than snapper when there is a wave the sunny coast guys do get wave staved.
When theres a strong S steel all roads lead to Noosa,no carparks and not enough waves for the numbers, great wave but very hard scoring one.

Not saying its not a busy mate, saying I got lucky when I arrived. Maybe I should make this sentence clearer, "Next morning was waist high, heaps of longboards fully dominating."...I was not on a longboard, I had three waves I had to fight tooth & nail for

I wasn't gonna enter into this conversation, coz we kinda had it a few months ago in the longboard room, only not comparing to Perth.

I will ask you Queensland boys a question though. Have you lived & surfed in Perth
Just that your idea on inconsistent decent waves might be different to those who have

Photos and picks can be a long way from reality.. I could show you picks from my local that make it look world class, but if you saw it first hand you'd laugh.. But having said that last weekend a mate and were discussing would we prefer to live with 1km of Trigg. The crowd factor made us agree that with just two of us out, sharing lower quality waves made it worth it.

WA really could do with some more points, preferable long rights

For sure bro, they're some nice pics & I did say, I think I got lucky

I understand your point. Point I'm making is wave frequency for both Perth & from what you've told me of the Sunshine coast is also not consistent. However when Sunshine coast is firing & Perth is firing. The quality of waves & options differ greatly due to the shape of the coastline. Perth does not really have any sheltered spots apart from a few short groins.

Just had an idea...next time you have a beer with SDR, ask him his opinion, Perth vs Sunshine Coast in regard to surf quality & frequency. He will be able to give us a definitive answer

Yep, you cant read conditions.

Yeah.......that must be it

Loads of locals who don't surf it, doesn't bother me
It can have its moments though

I only wish i had a little more time to head offshore were many older locals surf

Here's the definitive answer:

Sunshine Coast gets more surfable days per year than Perth;

at their best, Sunshine Coasts waves are better than Perths,

there are more waves within a fifty kilometre radius of the center of the Sunshine Coast compared to 100 km radius for Perth (measured from Floreat);

Noosa isn't worse than Trigg point on a day of days (both a dog eat dog battle to the Death-except there's more and longer right hand points at Noosa, and if Noosa is on a whole bunch of Sunshine right hand points are on).

Gold Coast is better again for consistency and quality, but less wave options;

Northern NSW is arguably better again in all regards except the on the handful of days the Goldie lives up to its potential (the day I surfed Snapper that was in the surf mags I also drove to Lennox and it was bigger and firing, but not as perfect a barrel).

southern NSW is better again in my opinion but I guess I can't call that bit definitive.
