Thanks again, all my FW boards are futures. It gets bloody expensive trying different fins but ill look into those options tomorrow online maybe.
I picked up a new tail pad today but didn't go the Dusty Payne (But your right its wider) i went one with a slightly lower kicker to hopefully protect the toe a bit more..![]()
I picked up a pair of Futures T1 twins in their composite material from my local surfshop's odds and ends fin box for $40 box the other day.
Worth seeing if the local shops have any. The composites are fine for smaller waves with their level of flex.
The composites with trailer are only $65 new anyway.
Cheaper than selling your board and buying another one.
I don't mind buying fins as they are easy to sell again if I don't like them.
It's worthwhile building a good varied fin quiver if you surf varied kinds of board shapes and sizes.
If you're only riding hpsbs (high performance shortboards) then its different because you can use the same kind of fin template (and adjust sizes) for the incremental changes in your board dimensions.
I've never seen a specials box In WA with any furthers fins, That would be nice. I already have a small collection and I'm not totally opposed to buying more, i just don't like all this choice, i find i end up second guessing myself all the time (Just like this entire thread TBH) and i get stuck over thinking it![]()
I can't believe the angst in this thread. Surely it's self-evident at a single glance what sort of board it is and how it will perform?
If I took your Prado to Wanneroo, should I complain that it's not cornering and handling as well as a touring car?

So your saying just except the tail slide, really whats wrong with asking for some idea from people who may have a good idea![]()
So far I've moved the tail pad, looking at different fins options and now have some good idea that Its not just me, others have had a similar issue or experience..
I appreciate you input Legion but we can't all obviously be as incredible as you are in the surf, and quiet frankly your attitude to people who are not of your ability is obvious and really quiet frankly part of the reason this place is so quiet..
Would i expect my Prado to race around Wanneroo, no but then again if when i turned the steering wheel and got nothing, i might try and find a problem..

Funny that ...
You're thinking about putting slicks on the Prado and lowering it to try and change its nature.
So your saying just except the tail slide ...
Yep. Use it to your advantage. Tail sliding boards can be heaps of fun.
If you want a board for steep hollow waves, get a board for steep hollow waves. Yours is 20 3/4" wide FFS and 2 5/8" thick with full rails. For me (different measurements to you) I'd be looking < 19" x 2 3/8" with a very much smaller tail and refined rails.
Why are you surprised at how one of their least performance shapes performs? They have about 30 boards further up in the range, some obviously designed for HP surfing at places like Trestles, some obviously designed for hollow waves. The one you chose is designed to be forgiving and fun, not hold a sharp line in difficult conditions. Not turn sharp in the pocket. Bust the tail loose over a section, sure, maybe. Use it for what it is.
As I said I'm on a similar philosophy board right now and you make the most of it. I don't expect deep barrels and critical placement and big rail turns. I will try for little airs and slides and busting loose instead. Occasionally I'll experience exactly what you are but you compensate and make it fun.
I'm a kook, can't surf at all ...

I thought he was talking about how his Prado was handling on the rutted out 4WD track on the way to Wanneroo!![]()
< 19 inch boards. So ninetees legion. Wide, short and thick is the go these days. Unless you don't weigh much or surf like Mick Fanning?![]()
So i finally surfed again today. I had moved the tail pad back nearly an inch and it actually feels much better.
I also tried the AM2 (Large) in Hex core and had no slide out and still turned sweet..Much happier finally![]()
I tried to look at my rear foot after taking of, it didn't happen, that would take a lot cleaner waves id suggest![]()
Thanks again for all the advice..
So It was fins ![]()
Yeah i guess![]()
The good thing is though it still turns nice..![]()
I reckon the unibrow looks the goods JB. Much thinner in the tail. Did you have a look at that one? Good to hear your Dom is working better for ya now though as well.

Yeah maybe. Id really like to try a Uni and a Spitfire in comparison. Another mate was out yesterday with His Chubby Checker and that looked good also. But sadly we don't get demo days in Aust like they have OS.. I still have a sweet spot for the Vanguard
Still just too much choice![]()

i am a big fun of them. wrote few posts on this forum before how good they are

I have a UB and recommend them as long as you get the volume right. It has a fat tail which can lead to issues at and above double head but not insurmountable you are just not going to rip the heart out of a Margret's set wave. For around Perth it will be fine, slow waves or barrelling it will go great.
I have a hellfire which has a problem around the bottom of any thing that gets a bit square where as the Uni has a bit more kick in the nose and no problems driving with the front foot off the bottom.
Its the board I ride in Bali no matter what size.
Down the line speed is excellent I run quads and thrusters depending on the wave, I have persevered with quads and just starting to enjoy a bit more control.
I started with Firewires at their inception (Burt made a heap of boards for mates over the years) and have had alternators, flexfire, hellfire and now the Unibrow al good boards depending where you are with your surfing.
