Yeah I know. That's my point. There are no rails. There's no contact with the water. It's not surfing as such. But each to their own.

me? I want to hit a lip and and do a scything cutty. Let's see a foil board do a turn like Slater or Egan or Knox or Occy.

They are something completely different. Fun for some I am sure.

How dare anyone do anything different. Everybody should be the same.

Nothing wrong with people doing different sports, but i think you missed the point is that its not surfing, Its something i agree, and you may enjoy it, but i don't see it as a progression to surfing, oh and this is a surfing forum thats all

Paddling for a wave, dropping in and trimming, feathering lips, turns and the drive of the wave. Non of those things are what a foil is..

Really?? Looks like all of the above are already happening for those who are proficient.

If you get hit by a surf foil it will hurt & bruise, but is unlikely to cut you - its too slow and the leading edge is like 1cm thick and totally blunt.

You don't need a sharp edge to draw blood mate.
These things have no place in any lineup, whether ridden by Kooks, Kai or Laird himself.

Nasty bruise.

The injury and resultant photo showing a massive head wound sparked big-wave charger Jamie Mitchell to make a hydrofoil PSA. From his Facebook, Mitchell wrote:

So lately I have been asked consistently about my thoughts on the so called "NEW" foil popularity and haven't really said much. But, yesterday sadly I saw a photo that I new was coming sooner than later. In my opinion Foils are for open ocean swells, Outer Bombies, and places where there are no people or very few people doing it together. Foils are dangerous, very dangerous, and do not belong in the surf zone with the masses and general public. Yes, Kai and and a few talented kids can probably control the boards amazingly well, but you can't control other peoples' actions and movements. I see more and more clips everyday of people trying the foils and I am so scared that someone will pay the ultimate price and die. Look at this photo below. If a foil hits you or you hit someone with the foil, it's going to end badly. I sure hope the people and companies that are making money off these are doing their best to educate people about the dangers. I don't think this will be the 1st or last incident unfortunately. I'm very happy that the gentleman in this photo will be ok. Please think about your surroundings before you just jump in and start surfing those boards.

Any piece of equipment in the wrong hands will be dangerous. That shocking injury was self inflicted by a kite foil not a surf foil. Kite foils are a totally different design to surf foils and are way more dangerous.

We have a regular foiler at my home break. However, he's not interested in the fast, steep walls that we are and keeps well clear of everyone else. We're not interested in the waves he's catching because we can't catch or ride them.

Any new activity has opportunities, threats and fears, real and perceived. For the most part, the foilers will keep well clear of everyone else. If they get too close or are dangerous to others, they will cop abuse from those affected. The line up has a tendency to self regulate by calling out bad behaviour by saying so until the offender gets the message and moves on.

Regarding catching waves, I took my kite foil out for a bit of a play in the surf without the kite. You can let the white water engulf you and you get enough of a push to end up riding out the front. As long as you're moving then you can pop up on the foil and have some fun.

Not sure about surf foiling but a tight radius kite foil carve feels a bit more like throwing a mountain bike around a berm. There's a big dip as you weight up the wing, like loading suspension, and a massive swoop on the exit.

Getting air is huge fun. It sounds like a light sabre as the hiss of the foil gets louder then goes swoosh as you carve and pop.

I suspect crowded lineups won't be a concern. Most foiling will happen on days shortboarders would not even go to the beach.

I guess there will always be dickheads and kooks. There's certainly enough of those on Seabreeze.

I ought to show you the scare on my right buttock hit by a sharp single fin of my 7'8" pin tail by the year 1975 and today it's looking more and more an horrible scare .
After seing that ...pic , you will ban single fin as well as you want to do it for foils.

Did I say ban them? Did I even comment?
I posted a pic and comment from Jamie Mitchell in response to a bloke saying they would bruise you. Look him up if you don't know who Jamie Mitchell is.

If you think that they aren't dangerous in a crowded lineup or beach then you are a ****ing idiot.. Even the top guys riding them say so.
Same as single fins with no leggies on crowded days.

You don't know what other people are going to do and as proved by your arse. The rider isn't always in control, accidents happens despite people intentions or perception of their own ability.

Just go somewhere there is no one around and no one will give a **** what you do.

I quote the all thread with other ones and your own negative posts. This present topic is about to "ban the foil " Showing that pic and comment of Jamie Mitchell is still one comment and argument to ban . So you desserve the pic of my wound so closed of my a.. made by own board just by myself on a remote Maroccan break.
About Idiot, I only know the kind of who come out where there is only frustration to bring back in, so avoid the crowded place whatever what you ride or paddle or search the mean to have freedom and fun .
In last point I report what said up here in this topic "The asian surfer who cut his face open was learning to foil on a surf foil using a foil designed for kiting (small & sharp), and thats why he got those catastrophic injuries in the photos." Any one who learn has to pay his due even in Hawa?.
Due to my age I will probably never do Foil but it will be a big lost in my surfing life even if crowd of idiots succeed to ban it.

They don't please many kite surfers either. At least they can't kite where normal kite boarders play - near the shallows.
