I really think Foils should be banned from all line ups
As we all know the crowds at most line ups are beyond a joke
Why add an out of control craft with a big blade underneath
Are jet skis or even motor boat allowed to be out in crowded beaches husling for waves
An accident waiting to happen

Ooh, the paddle-kooks are going to be pissed at you.

They'll be sharpening their carbon fibre pitch-forks right now...

Or have them sit up in the dunes with a 22

I agree, tho doubtful anyone will use a foil sup board or surf board anywhere around Perth. I mean where is it deep enough to?
Also there is generally only a handful of adequately skilled SUP surf riders that could ride a foil, and generally i would think those people will not as they are generally either surfing or SUP surfing.
I surf and SUP surf, and think this foil business is ridiculous. Seems predominantly Hawaii based so all good.

I'd hate to see a collision with a kite foil.
At the very least it would be severe lacerations and at worst a fatality.
It would be like a shark attack.

Would you be scared if you knew that shortboard foils are already in the lineup ? I've seen several on the Gold Coast.

I don't want to upset TimKay but some of the New Gen foils are now designed for 'normal' surfing. They work in normal waves, are no deeper than a surfboard fin but are way faster across the wave. Be prepared to poo yourself at the extra speed on a 4 foot wave !

There are no rails when you're foiling.
There's plenty of vids of sup and surf foiling.

Yeah I know. That's my point. There are no rails. There's no contact with the water. It's not surfing as such. But each to their own.

me? I want to hit a lip and and do a scything cutty. Let's see a foil board do a turn like Slater or Egan or Knox or Occy.

They are something completely different. Fun for some I am sure.

Just reread my post.

I'd like to see me do a turn like Slater et al.

But anyways, I can't do the things I want to do on a foil. It ain't the future it's just a thing. Surfboard vs wave ski vs booger vs kiting vs SUP. Except they can all do a cutty.

Snowboard vs skiing?

I leave bigger cuttys on my pin dick when whacking off with my microscope and tweezer set...........

the he only foils which will ever be respected in the surfing community are those wrapping the devils lettuce............

this is is not surfing, yeah I will entertain it for light viewing or enjoy watching someone pull in at the box or triple head cloudbreak on one and see people get six shades of **** whipped out of them,,,, other than that you need to let go

so probably not the thread to jump in and hi but I'm a kiter who has just bought a surf foil for kiting in waves. Im based North of the River and this summer will be my 3rd on the hydrofoil. I usually do the downwinder with the kiters from Floreat to Trigg

Do you guys know the difference between a surf/sup foil and kite foil ? Kite foils are usually carbon fibre and razor sharp. They have long masts - 1m+, and are built for speed - the course racers are now regularly reaching 38-40 kts downwind. They have relatively small wings but very elongated - high aspect - and yes we cut ourselves to pieces regularly. Surf foils in comparison are huge, thick and usually made of plastic (G10) or other composites and totally blunt. The masts are short - like 60 - 70cm and are also slow as hell - like you can foil at walking pace, but this is exactly what makes them suitable for paddling or supping. If you get hit by a surf foil it will hurt & bruise, but is unlikely to cut you - its too slow and the leading edge is like 1cm thick and totally blunt. The asian surfer who cut his face open was learning to foil on a surf foil using a foil designed for kiting (small & sharp), and thats why he got those catastrophic injuries in the photos. Anyway - if you are worried about getting injured - its the kite foilers you need to watch out for. From experience i doubt you'll see to many surf foilers in Perth lineups because our banks are pretty shallow and we often have breaking waves, noob surf foilers really want small unbroken swells with maybe a little mushy whitewater at best. I doubt you will be in the water at the same time - suppers maybe. But I just thought Id say if anyone is curious to see / try my surf foil up close, let me know. Its mounted to a 4'11 x 18 x 1 5/8 surfboard so if you want to try to paddle it, you are welcome.

The foil designs differ because the kite foils are using the energy from the kite whereas the surf Foils get it from the wave so they hAve to use all the technical foils to get lift. As the surf foilers get better/ faster the foils will need less lift so the foils will be lower aspect and thinner.
It's early days and it could all disappear overnight if councils pass a No Foil Law.

You don't need a sharp edge to draw blood mate.
These things have no place in any lineup, whether ridden by Kooks, Kai or Laird himself.

So following your logic LS, that rules out most surf craft except maybe the surf mat

Nothing wrong with people doing different sports, but i think you missed the point is that its not surfing, Its something i agree, and you may enjoy it, but i don't see it as a progression to surfing, oh and this is a surfing forum thats all

Paddling for a wave, dropping in and trimming, feathering lips, turns and the drive of the wave. Non of those things are what a foil is..
