Hey guys
Im a keen surfer and got a few different size boards. My biggest board being a 9ft 3 mal
Anyway im wondering what size is needed to hang 5 or even 10 ,hop on my knees and paddle out ,walk up and down on the board old school style. im 88kgs and the mal I have starts to sink if I hop on my knees
what do ya reckon 10 plus do they get much bigger? 11 or 12 cheers

Welcome bigtom, you don't need to go for 10 foot plus boards to achieve your wish list.Volume is your friend!

I'll leave this to the others because I'm no knee paddling nose rider,Lacey come in.

i only ask this as your new and we have no background on you big fella.

big tom, i'm 71 kgs, have a 9'8 cw hotlog with i think 70 litres. knee paddles easy. guess you have to do the figures at your weight.

maybe 85, 90 ish litres. i guess that works out a touch under a litre per kg for a knee paddler

Hey Weiry. Would love some advice on this stuff as every time I shuffle forward I dig the nose and wipe out. Obviously doing something wrong as the board has been shaped for this purpose...

We need some light weights to tune into this topic.

Watch some classic longboard flicks, you will note they sink the tail of the board so water is flowing over and keeping the tail down, they then move to the nose at a fast rate, not a slow shuffle, move your body weight as far back as possible while on the nose.

I can't do it but thats what I've taken out of watching othersFor someone like me I would need a 12 foot 666

Hahahaha i have done it but as mac said the light weights need to way in here.
mac is spot on its all about placement on the wave you wont nose ride on the shoulder.
if you go into the ....more longboarding thread... last two pages have some great vid's showing
nose riders doing it well its the thing i like most about longboarding.
also mac said about the tail being held underwater.... he is spot on
if you're in the top section of the wave with the lip feathering ...your in the spot

hi
i am no expert either, but it's great to watch some videos to get the general idea, most of it is about placement on the wave, and the right sort of wave if you don't weigh 50 kg dripping wet, i also find that that cross-stepping helps as it is smoother and quicker than shuffling, but you also have to soft feet instead of being thumpy if that makes sense

Weight has nothing to do with it. Eg Taylor Jensen is big, Tyler hatz.....

It is about positioning, stalling, board control and trimming... All take time to master or even slightly figure it out

Don't shuffle going forward it puts you off more than stepping. And looks ugly.

To practice just take off on an angle turn slightly to hit the line and run up there... Don't try to get to the nose just get to the trim point then figure out if your going forward or back...

Ok I'm crap but that is the money SP...the last few weeks on the small days I have had one plan and that was get to the nose.

I was a shuffler, and I struggled to get to the nose. The last third sure, but after that it was sinking time.

So now I have had the one plan,as soon as I pop up I would just run to the nose, fail or win I was learning. Since then I have had some great nose rides, some tens, mainly five over with my other foot close by.....

So after my long winded pat on the back to myself, SP has summed it up nicely....now I need to learn how.to get back

Thanks for the reply everyone. I guess it makes sense ould be fine about stalling and position on the wave and now you mention it when they nose ride on the films they do position themselves so the lip is on the back of the board.i suppose the right wave will make all the difference
aswell the board I have will proballly be fine for that.i thought it had more to do with the size , hence I was asking about knee paddling but that's no biggie if I cant do that should be fine to try to hang 5 .In the past I have done my fair share of face plants trying but might just try to time it better

Style & placement certainly does play a big role in noseriding mate. But so does the bottom shape of your board. I spent over a year trying to nose ride on my 9'1 performance LB. I mean right up with at least a hang 5, but the board wasn't built for it, too much rocker, thin, not wide, no concave. I've just bought a 9'3 that I should be able to get it to happen...What is your 9'3 like in shape, could you post some pics?

Thanks for the tips guys. Will have a go this weekend.

I think I know my problem. I'm too far out on the shoulder. Just need to work out how to stall properly and then it will start to come together.

Its hard to stall a 9'3, try delaying your bottom turn or cutting back.

^^ Sorry Mick i dont agree, doesnt matter what size board it is..

Stalling is simply shifting your weight.

Watch any good LB rider they turn and put the weight back over the fin to slow the board down, you actually dont want to stall/ stop cause you need the momentum. You just want to wash off the speed enough for the tail to trap and the wave to hold it.

^^^ this dude goes alright . Watch the nose of the board before he nose rides he doesn't really stall he just kinda keeps the tail down and nose up. It's more pronounced at the end of his turns

He also does a couple of take off straight in to nose rides aswell
