666 room useless for most things, anything that is not stock standard was going to type brands here but too many of them, out of their league.
I know more than most in there now.
Hope no one from there is reading now.....
Wax I reckon will work, apart from standing on it a long time, no padding, feet will hurt.
HTFU Nozza probably the answer there.
I just hate the dirt in the wax look I see a lot.
No knee time for this little Noz.
And does anyone unwax / rewax?

It's OK Nozza, I read the 666 forums but don't post much. You're secret is safe.

Back to the wax. All my 666's have deckpads, none of my surfboards do. Maybe that is how it works best. I do like waxing up a board pre-surf, part of the ritual.
But wax comes off fairly easy, so why not do the experiment and try that first. Light base coat of a cold water wax and see how that goes. Might not be the most comfortable, as you have said yourself.
But either wax or grip, you'll still have one pristine side to show off.
My Sunova custom, from when Bert was still in Mandurah, below. He'd got a fresh batch of balsa in and made a nice pattern with the grain.
Still my favorite shortboard.

For interest, the colour scheme on your re/white board intrigued me. A mate of mine had a board made my by Bert, also 15 odd years ago and asked for blue on the sides and a translucent white in the middle. Both Berth and myself were unconvinced that it would look good. But it did. Will see if I can find some pics and post in the 666 side.

Just remembered another another idea, an old tip for putting dogs and kids on the end of a board with no grip.
Use a non-slip bath grip, the ones with suction cups on the bottom.
May look a bit odd (unless you got a nice one with ducks or something!).
Comes of easy post surf and might even add a bit of comfort to the feet.

Hey Nozza,
I routinely strip the wax off my boards once they start getting dirty - hate the look of dirty old wax. Plus, it gives me something to do while drinking.
I'd guess that it takes around 45 min to completely strip (inc cleaning with wax and grease remover) and rewax.

Give the wax a go. Don't like it, then strip it off.

All good.

I hate deck grips. Even on my SUP.

Anyway, I don't bother with that base coat/top coat crap. I just use Sex Wax in appropriate temperature gradient.

I only clean the wax off when it starts moving under my toes during turns so my boards do get pretty grimy looking. I use a wax comb every couple of sessions rather than rewax so that does a little of the renewal job. A new wax job should stay looking good for a few weeks though.

When it's time to remove the wax completely I scrape off as much as possible with the comb (its a pretty easy job), then remove the rest with kitchen paper towel and turps, and finally get rid of the turps residue with metho. Taadaaah! The boards in showroom condition. Apart from the crack. And dings. And dodgy shed repairs. Anyway, the whole job takes maybe 10-15 minutes. Quick and easy.

hope that helps.

I don't use my wax comb any more for removing wax.Only use for roughing up, etc.
I bought a plastic paint scraper from Bunnings, nice and wide with a good size handle, takes half the time to get all the wax off.
Just use any wax after you get a good base down.
Cheers.

I think u may be over complicating it.
wax it...surf it.
when the wax gets too dirty or too thick scrap it off with a plastic scrapper and wipe with metho and re wax it!

Sit the board in the sun to soften the wax. If at night, run a hair dryer over sections and scrape it off (in said sections).
i then grab a rag and wax and grease remover from the paint isle in Bunnings. Wipe it down with that, then wash/wipe with a wet rag to clean the wax n grease remover off... then whack your new wax on.
base coat then top coat... depending on your preference.
Personally, I just tend to use 'tropical' or similar year round.... then I don't worry about having a base coat and a top coat, it's all the same. Slipping off the board is the least of my worries when surfing

Okay, I'll try a serious answer, MR and I have a mate called Mick, he recently scored a 10.6 Ian Goodacre Board that's a real honey, but the guy had deck grip all over it from nose to tail. Apart the the extra weight, Mick found that he was getting blisters on his knees from the foam deck grip, I figure any other deck treatment will
likly do the same

but wait, there's more, I also figure that if Mick was wearing a steamer, it probably would not matter. So my serious answer is, if you use an abrasive deck treatment to keep your board pretty, then always wear a steamer

There's a bit more to that story. He's just gone and removed all the deck grip pads from the edges, so it's got a 200mm wide strip down the centre of deck grip and the remaining surface is now waxed....

Nozza,

Geeze their a bunch of smartarses aren't they. you cant get any sense some days.

Most important if you are using wax, make sure that you buy one that suits the water temp where you live. don't buy a warm water wax for Vicco surf.
Don't keep on applying new wax over old wax, use a wax comb to roughen it up each time you use it. If it gets too thick it will also hurt your feet.

after a couple of uses scrape it off and apply a new coat, this way it will keep looking pretty for you.

I find this difficult to believe as I was of the understanding that all blokes from Sydney have callouses on their knees and blokes from Queensland put on dresses when there not wear steamers in the 20C water

Serious question Tux, is a 3x2 wetty doable in the Torquay area around May?

The reason I ask is because I want to drive down there for one of my monthly meetings rather than fly. The net meeting is April 10, but that's out of the question because it's school hols, so the next before the dead of winter is May.

I spent a lot of years sailing skiffs with Helmy.
This generally happened once or twice a week, on Saturday and / or Sunday.
You would bring your sailing gear - wetsuit, booties, gloves, trap belt down in your waterproof sailing bag.
Remove it from the bag, put it on, go out and race, piss in it, sweat in it, whatever.
You would then come in, shower, possibly still in the gear, or you possibly abandoned it in the car park, put it back in the waterproof sailing bag, and take it home.
Apparently some people took it out of the bag, washed and dried it, then put it back in the bag, ready for the next sailing adventure.
Being a busy chap, this seemed like a total waste of time, very inefficient, when you could just leave it in the bag, and there it was, ready to go next time.
Some of my fellow skiff sailors suggested this made it smell bad, but I just took this as boyish banter and general good humoured fun.
I am sure at least twice, my sailing bag disappeared over winter , causing me to buy all new gear. Helmy denied any knowledge of what the fate of my sailing gear could have been.
Now I am old and sensible, I have replaced the sailing bag with my VW van.
My wettie, unwashed, is piled carefully in the back with booties, whatever else.
Possibly hung from racks I have under the roof, but towels get preference on those.
Winter tests things in Melbourne, but the bootie warmers I think I mentioned earlier, help the drying.
Eldest daughter has commented when I have dropped her off at the station "Something smells in here, really quite bad Dad".

Yeah less pads the better...tropical wax if your applying a base coat in the neat of summer & after that winter wax. But generally a winter wax will be fine in most parts of Oz. I just got back from Taiwan with an interesting difference to say Indo. Water about 25c, air temp 19-24. My board was already applied with a tropical base coat & light winter softcoat, The airtemp would not allow indo topcoat, only the little bit of Cream winter wax I had....sometimes it pays to have a quiver of wax, people who tell you diff wax temps are a hoax are wrong...
