yes, not straight lines....just looks like that.....gentle climb and drops is a closer description.....
From what Ive seen of late the big wave surfers are definately aiming for performance as well as making the wave and avoiding a major thrashing, like they say they want to surf these waves not just ride them, they're pulling in from halfway to the bottom instead of dropping right down and its through the designs of these respected shapers that allows them to do this, big wave surfing is at a fantastic point in time now the way they are surfing these waves.
I love people telling Roy why a design that only he probably understand is stupid.
It's funny as. If it works who knows, guess we will find out soon...
but one thing is for sure. Roy has thought the farker through and spent many years on this type if design... And defending it online...
Good on ya Roy....
And your Blef is a nice fin... Only used it once so won't out my thoughts down here but definitely be getting used again.

They are having major issues turning halfway down the face, due to the design flaws in the boards ( particularly the bigger boards) from 'respected shapers'.
Being able to turn anywhere on the face at speed is a major performance advantage and it's something I've always designed for.
By definition if making the wave is the goal then doing it equals 'performance' in that context.

Yeah it's pretty funny, they get all puffed up and try to sound important.
Thanks for the feedback on the fin. ![]()
Pffff to you Roy really who do you think you are coming in here with your weird maybe wonderful design and start slagging forum users, sorry this is not the place for your rude attitude.
Hmm the video I watched they didn't seem to be having too much trouble,it was at peahi and it was pretty solid waves, can understand the difficulties on the upper end of wave size although these were 35' faces easily, anyway it looked more about performance than just making the wave to me.When is your board for Camel complete, looking forward to seeing how it goes in waves of consequence.

sorry im loving roy and I really do want to see the end result of how this craziness ends up. hey we could all become a part of history...or the funniest story we can tell our grand kids about.
either way im impressed by roys take no prisoners attitude. delusions of grandeur? or pure genius? only time and results will answer that![]()

Lol !
I just said that I find it funny when some people get all puffed up and try to sound important as a way of naysaying my designs... crime of the century I'm sure
I had no idea that beneath the façade lurked such wilting flowers....
I would never make such an illogical statement... it's self contradictory since some people agree with me. ![]()
Nor would I make the English usage error re. 'else's'.

Maybe both, and if you are looking for what happens at the end it 'aint going to get there as long as I'm still living.

I think I saw that video, clean faces and what one might call 'smaller' for Peahi.
If you look around though you'll see plenty of nightmarish scenes unfolding as boards fail to do what they are told to do. Mainly at the upper end size wise I agree. When smaller boards can be used the designs seem pretty good... as long as short board theory is used which it can be up to a point length wise.
Not sure re. board for Camel we'll be making a bunch of different shapes in the same vein, seeing how they feel and what Camel is interested in.
The first board is taking forever to finish since the 3D glass is proving to be very difficult to use, the next one should be quicker to glass as I think we've sorted a method to make it easier. Might make some with conventional glass too, will need plenty of it to get the weight up though as the eps blanks are so light.
Laurie give this Roy fellow his own forum, that way he can spook his sh-t to himself, forum title FREAK SHOW.

well that's a bit self defeatist ....I was more under the impression you want to see the end result. I know I am enjoying the ride watching this direction your taking in big wave boards. I do not understand any of it...but im enjoying it nontheless![]()
I will enjoy it when I see footage of Camel taking off on a monster and hearing his thoughts afterwards. I reckon people would be happy to pay a few bucks to see that.

All good, it's just that there's always something new on the horizon, results happen along on the way of course. I've also had to apply stupendous amounts of patience in this game ( which can be frustrating) over the years so you might be hearing that too.

Yeah and let's hope he rides some smaller ones first...

that's a bit mean mister mac
Well a lot has gone down since I read the tail end of this thread this morning ! Am I the only one who works around here !![]()
My two bobs worth ....... I do find Roy's designs and attitude confronting and very 70,s
That may not be a bad thing though ,as a lot of good things happened in the 70's , .............I think ![]()
There have been a lot of designs bagged and howled down over the years , but if people caved in to criticism every time ,nothing would ever happen.
I recon Roy knows he is not the god of design, but what the hell ! . you have my blessing my son !! continue on with gods work !!! ![]()

Sorry about all the "face" things Roy, I lack your vocabulary.
All this stuff about performance surfing and big waves is pretty funny. Most big wave surfers aren't aiming for performance, but survival and it is only the elite who carry any pretensions of big wave performance. Those are the ones we see in vids. I saw a 12 footer a few days ago made for a bloke who surfs 20' Margies, and photos of him and the board in action. Anyway you look at it, he is never throwing that up in the lip for a snap. The same shaper (Tom Hoye) has also shaped boards for Camel - which is by-the-by. I guess my point is, most big wave surfing by most big wave surfers (the normal freak, not the elite end) is less "Wow check him out" and more "Omigod, check that out" surfing. Less impressed by performance and more in awe of courage as they paddle into frightening waves. For the waves Roy is aiming at, I would like to see some big cutties though as even my useless surfing of 12 foot waves involved some high speed, drawn out cutties. If Roy's board can get someone into the wave - and let's face it paddling into a wave with that much volume shouldn't be an issue - make the drop (weird tail but drawn out enough that I suspect skatiness won't be the issue) and get someone to a channel then that is a pass mark. After that, we will see.
And there are different types of big waves too. Boaties, Margies and Bombie are all next to each other and all very different. Different boards go best in each wave. If Roy's board isn't destined for a Pipeline type wave, maybe Sunset is more it's forte. Does it make it a bad board if it has some limitations? I wouldn't think so. It probably makes it pretty typical.
One of roy's wood boards has been ridden in SMALL sunset!....The opinion of the test rider was that HE wouldn't use that board in big waves. That board kinda looks like a bigger version of this poxy thing.
Cheers Vic... and guilty as charged re. the '70's. Thanks for the horrific but amusing Skyhooks vid,. I believe that we are all Gods in the making, and the term 'ego' I use in the academic theosophical sense. I'll stop before going too mung bean.
Drip you make a lot of sense. The design being made right now is very versatile. For Pipeline and similar waves I'd just make it thinner, but as an all rounder best to keep the volume up. Performance is one of the most misused terms in surfing ( and there are plenty to choose from). Performance isn't a style as is commonly supposed it's performance of a given task. If the board is designed to make more waves and less wipeouts and does so then it is 'high performance'.
Sure is.

Lol he said that he be scared to ride it in big waves... of course he'd be scared doesn't that go with the territory?
Besides he doesn't even ride big waves....
