hi cats, long time lurker finally signed up. Im 45 from Newcastle, back surfing (on a longboard) the past 12 months after a .........30 year break.
anyway, ive got my mojo back and have a few boards but feel the need to spring for a real gem. I dont really want to spend the coin on a Mac T but i noticed Goddard boards feature on this site a bit. So are they any good?

steve

This was was original question and the first 2 or 3 replys answered the question. So before Ron got back to me i guessed his boards prices would reflect their reputation, and rightly so. The response i got from Ron was great and explained that as i only gave him a 9'6" longboard to quote i guessed i was not going to get a solid number. I was happy with his numbers and his explination as to what type of thing add to the cost.
i did email McT with a similar question and got a great respose also. Only difference is they did not get on a forum and rant about inocent hardworking potential customers "tire kicking" in fact i have had a couple follow up emails from Tav sudgesting other options and glassing schedules.
What ****s me in any industry is when people selling a rather expensive product are not prepared to at least appear humble and interested in a new potential customer. Its like buying something you have an interest in but dont have 40 years experience making it. Think about buying a new car, or jet ski or big flat screen tv, sure 99% of the public appear to be uninformed clowns to the salesman but sometimes you need to put the time in to get the sale and only then should you expect repeat sales, esspecially when someone lives 7 hours drive away.
Bag McTav all you like but at some stage Bob put his money where his mouth is and employed staff, salesmen, managers, office staff, advertising people, PR staff and sunk big money into expanding workshops Ect..and it payed off.
i guess after all this i would be better of getting something local from Pete Sheely or Jye Byrnes.
i understand Ron is a top bloke and knows his stuff but instead of whining about driving a bus for a living instead of making boards maybe he should be happy to invest a few minutes in an email that could have ended up in a long happy relationship With a new customer.

I don't know if it is even worth a reply...but seeing a few green thumbs means there are a few that agree with the crap you are carrying on with, I have had a couple of tim tams and I am quite calm by the way.

"only difference is they did not get on a forum and rant about innocent hardworking potential customers tire kicking"....

hang on a second got to dry my eyes....that's better where was I......were you not on first telling everybody you were going with Mct...when you had emailed me telling me you would contact me when you were ready...cutting our correspondence before I could appear "humble and interested in a new potential customer".

"sure 99% of the public appear to be uninformed clowns"......let me adjust that hat...there fits perfect

"Bob put his money where his mouth is and employed staff, salesmen, managers, office staff, advertising people, PR staff and sunk big money into expanding workshops Ect..and it payed off" you my friend are an uninformed clown.

"whining about driving a bus for a living instead of making boards".......I am making boards bonehead....and I drive a bus as well...I can't see where I was whining about it..... as a matter of fact I'm enjoying both.

"maybe he should be happy to invest a few minutes in an email that could have ended up in a long happy relationship with a new customer"
like I said ..you cut the correspondence....oh hang on a minute............you're not gay are you Steve?

ok Steve that's how it goes...you have a bitch I have a bitch...it's all on a public forum and it ends up a sh1t fight...we end it right here....you have something to say, you either PM me or email me, or you can talk on the phone...and likewise from me.....where I was brought up it was fu(k em if they can't take a joke.....if you could not take a bagging you didn't cut it....so throw anything you like at me and we can still have ä long happy relationship"

Ron I can understand your frustration regards China etc as I said it's happening in my industry too. But surely someone doing something as simple as a price enquiry doesn't warrant a public shaming on a forum. Reckon most people would shop around a few places before making a desicion.
You do raise an interest point though shapers frustrations with customers but what about customers frustrations with shapers (I'm sure there'd be a few)

Hey Ron, I had no problem with your private response to my email. I just wanted to know if you were the real deal or not. There are guys on Gumtree selling hand made full customs for $500, and I did not want one of them. My only mistake was stating that I was going to spring for a McT. What I was doing, rather than kicking your tires I was throwing it out there as to different glassing schedules and as McT is well known and I had all their. board details from their site I thought that was a good starting point.
Be honest you spent all of 3 minutes responding to my vague initial request I don't think a few lines in an email is too much to ask.
Anyway one of the other fellas was correct. With shapers like Pete Sheely, Jye Byrnes, Sam Egan ect here in Newcastle I'm buying local now, and for the same coin you and McT would charge, only it won't come out of a CNC machine like Tav. (Not bagging them)
Went and spoke with 2 local blokes today who were very helpful. In fact we I did not ask price, ust stated that it will cost what it costs. With $1500 to spend I will get a nice board. Sorry this all got blown out of shape Ron, I still think your boards look sensational. But local is the way to go me thinks.
Thanks anyway and sorry for kicking your tires, and McT's. You obviously have enough local work without doing long distance jobs.

Talk about getting knickers in a knot. Some of this chat is similar to my kids arguments. I reckon it's pretty poor form to call prospective customers tyre kickers - maybe straight up say it's xxxx for a performance log. Xxxxx is extra. Not hard and it eliminates the head aches later in the sales process. In other industries like wine sales they refer to products being reassuringly expensive. Thus the more expensive but the product the better it performs. Most customers looking at mals have a few years under their belt and will walk away if labelled a tyre kicker.

All good Steve...out of all this.... going local is a smart choice....make sure you get in contact with Sam Egan, a nicer guy you will not find...a true gentleman of the industry, not a grumpy old pri(k like me and he is no slouch when it comes to longboards either.

what's wrong with forums is that at times the words don't show the true emotions of the writer...one can be having a good old belly laugh behind his keyboard, and to others he's tying nots in his underwear.

you reckon my form was poor... labelling prospective customers tyre kickers...if you got a listen in, at the office of your local car sales, you would ride a pushbike for the rest of your life.

oh and your post was contradictive in that it starts telling me to straight up show $$$$$ and finishes with "like wine sales they refer to products being reassuringly expensive".......hello best bit.......thus the more expensive the better it performs (is what I think you were trying to say) I like that

goddard surfboards....the more expensive...the better they perform try my new model....the shiraz

ok thanks to everyone, order placed with .........Peter Sheely (he only lives 10min away). I did speak with Sam Egan and Jye Byrnes who were both top blokes and all 3 could do whatever i wanted but Peter put in the most effort and was the most enthusiastic about building me a dream board.
Going with 9'6" x 23 wide 3" thick foam so it will end up a bit thicker. He took a heap of measurements off my 9'4" Mark Rabbadge board and tweeked them a little, very little. 60/40 Down rails up front to hard in rear. Slight point on nose and pin tail. Concave nose and some magic down the back....cant remember Veethrough middle to twin concave at rear? Anyway, 6+6 ond deck with 4oz patch and 6oz on bottom. He assured me thats heaps of glass and with a killer stringer it will work well. Blue foam blank with 3/8" laminated stringer i think (he said leave that to him) fins are 2 +1. Full gloss coat and was happy to leave most of the art to him. All i said was light sky blue stripes top and bottom with pin lines (not unlike the McT striped boards) but i told him to just go with the flow and work his mojo.
sorry for all the stress Ron, i hope my board comes out looking half a good as yours. Will post a photo early December.
