You northerners wouldn't understand, it is 7 hours odd from Melbourne, but a different climate.
Every time I go there, it is brilliant.
Today....
Froth'n for Hawaii in 8 weeks...and scared coz I know I will have to have at least one crack at pipe or I will be pissed at myself later for not having a go.
Just got back two weeks ago...Waikiki was firing after 2 lumpy 'freak' swells.....over surfed the shoulder, now frozen for 2 weeks straight...no pipe for me, it was even bigger (check Jamie O'Brien Vlog)
Have mates that get stoked on redoing old cars and driving them around . I get the same Stoke discovering old banged up boards and getting them back in the water .Becomes a bit of an addiction . And I find the old boards much more fun to surf then the old cars are to drive .
I get it fixing boards, I love doing pointless stuff on them.
I love getting an old neglected board, and bringing it back to looking like new (if you look from a distance, on an angle, with one eye closed)
But the old cars make me smile a lot. Nothing beeping at you for not doing something. If you didn't lock every door with a key, it's not locked.
Reaction they get from "young folk" today suggests we lost something somewhere along the way.

Love my old 85 camper bus and my 74 kombi was my favourite car ever - sadly Sold it to Qld few years back . ( one of those sales I regret )
Cracks me up when the kids try and find the button for the windows -can't work out the window winders
When I buy tropical wax and once I get it in my hands cause it means I'm off to indo or northern W.A...... it just really sinks in at that point
