All this talk of helmets made me go and buy one for an up coming Indo trip. Surfed with it today for the first time.
I hated it.

It kept pushing down on my eye brows making me squint when prone padding. Kept dripping water in my eyes for much longer than I liked causing issue after I had come off. copied a heap of **** from all my mates and had blow ins drop in on my because I thought I was a kook and did deserve the wave. Not happy.

I think it's going to take a while to get use to.
on positive note it felt better and cooler than a surf hat.

What type did you buy?

Have you got a pic so we can also have a good laugh.. .. Kidding (not really)

Gath convertible, took the spacer pads and the ear pieces out because it was too tight and don't like my ears covered when surfing.
Waiting on smaller ones to arrive. Will give it a second chance then.
No photos, luckily.

Probably a good idea to turn on English subtitles
(I would hate to use a helmet - it makes my scalp itch)

I wear one in the bigger waves and when there is a strong off-shore wind - on numerous occasions I have had the board get caught in the wind, go straight up, and come straight back at me. I was once surfing and it happened to another guy. He cut his head and hurt his neck.

One problem, I tend to be a little braver with a helmet on...

Like Cantsupenough said I wear a Gath on bigger days and strong wind condition. I had the exact scenario happen to me but I was out cold and was rescued by a mysterious surfer who to this day I have no idea who he was. I suffered concussion and amnesia and spent a day in hospital. Never did get memory of the incident back but I bought a helmet the next day

Got the Mystic from - www.wetsuitcentre.co.uk/mystic-impact-cap-2021.html but I think they may be low on stock

www.leisureoutlet.com/212435-mystic-impact-cap-black - also has them a bit cheaper.

Hope this helps

What a story, hail the mysto guy. So if the waves start to have some energy and size, I am fully vested up and start to wonder if adding a helmet would make sense.
Can these helmets do double duty in the skatepark?

I went for a ride engine soft bump cap. Seems to do the job. I like the peak as keeps the sun out of my eyes. It's quite cool to wear compared to a Gath hat, which I tend to overheat in.
Offers some protection, may stop a bump becoming a bruise or a graze?
