Not sure if there is any interest but i thought id throw up a few pics of my 9.6 SUP im building.
Just about to start on the rails. getting there slowly.

Cheers, Still about 10 hours of sanding of the decks to go. Then time to start on laminating up the rails.![]()

That is really awesome macknt. I've been thinking about doing something like this since coming across a boat building process by Bowdidge marine and deciding doing a 21 foot boat might be a bit much for me. (A SUP might be much more attainable).
What wood are you using? Is it paulownia?
Please keep the pictures coming - it is really interesting to watch something like this.
Thnx
the other ET
Hey ET,
Im building this in anticipation of building a boat one day. Its been good fun so might be a few more in the future.
Using paulownia and red cedar.
Still sanding, go the nose and tail shaped today. not sure if i should go a square tail or a round one any one know how the difference will effect the stability.
Should get the board sanded out tomorrow and start on the rails.
Couple of pics. ![]()

Hey makntracks, that board is going to come up a treat!
I do a lots of glassing work for a Perth company Bodhi Tree Surfboards who sell complete kits for a SUP as well as a range of surfboards. Greg the owner does building classes and I do group glassing tuition. www.bodhitreesurf.com.au/
Is yours a kit or have you built yours from scratch?looks like a kit box in the background? ..and have you decided on your layup for glassing, type of resins, gloss finish coating etc?
Looks like you have it well and truly under control mate tho if you need anything materials and tips wise feel free to give me a shout - always happy to share experience. Might be able to help you out on the boat building project too - been involved in a few wooden/composite boat builds since the mid 80's with West Systems and similar systems.
Looking forward to seeing the rails shaped!!
Hey Mackntracs, do you have to glass it?
Since seeing your post I have been doing a bit of online researching and there seems to be a lot of conflicting advice re glassing / not glassing paulownia surfboards & sups? A lot of seemingly knowledgeable people say a good oiling is enough. This would cut down on weight if correct?
Hope you keep posting photos of your progress. I am keen to attack one soon, but would like to see the guinea pig surfing his first - although not much surf in Darwin?
ET,
Hollow boards need to be glassed in my opinion, Paulownia solid boards can just be oiled ect. The 6mm veneer isnt overly strong and the joins would move and contract with the varied temperature even with a vent.
Ive cut all the timber for my rails but need to start getting into it they will take the time i think.
Best thing about Darwin is Bali is only a 1.45min flight away.
dude avoid that kinetix resin from shapers its rubbish.
try and get your hands on some resin research epoxy. dont get kwik kik, get regular or slow for the darwin weather!
Hey hows the build going? Just about to start my own, doing the whole AKU Shaper and template maker bit.....lots to think about!
Sorry been busy kiting in Bali.![]()

Board is going good just starting on the rails doing a hollow rail with a bit of trial and error but getting there slowly.
Any idea on what shape i should make the tail..
Still have no idea on what epoxy to use i have heard good and bad reports about nearly all brands and the UV stability.![]()

Nice sounds like a good break
!!!! Yep lost a bit of sleep thinking about the rails, just ordered some paulowina so I can run it thru a mates thicknesser at the same time as the WR Cedar! Can't help with the resin, a mate has offered to glass mine for me. Trying for a 9' board that I can surf!
Makntracks, got sick of waiting to see/hear more from you, so started on my own project ...
Not much work, nor much surf so have gotten stuck into it.
I got the paulownia wood and instructions from Geoff down at Paulownia Timber Sales on the Goldie
The thing will probably sink because I sink too many coldies while working on it - but the project keeps me occupied anyway while waiting for swell or job offer.
Mrs doesn't see much of me lately either.
I've been using West Systems epoxy and it seems to be pretty damn good at sticking wood together anyway.
Great work. whats plans with your rails?? is your west systems uv stable?
Got my timber from Geoff as well, great bloke. you were lucky to avoid the $200 freight charge.. ![]()
About resin work on wood i tell you what i know about:
Be care of oily wood, in case of it wash the surface. Can be done with stuff used by profesional painters, ask them about.
After that, you have to do a primer whatever the resin you will use ( polyester, polyurethane or epoxy)
Do a primer with as you may do a hot coat ( polyester as conventional board) but dont put any wax, put some more stirene as you would do for hot coating.
This way i said is to fix the laminating or coating job as deeper as possible in wood fibers .This will attached your next lamined job whatever the resin you may use.
Keep working wood that's great![]()

Hey Bertie,
what don't you like about the Kinetix resin? you had me worried as I had just bought some for my next board, always used SP and West before but the Kinetix is almost half the price, did a couple of test laminates today, although the resin is bloody thick once mixed its consistency is good, runs well, wets out nicely and has cured perfectly well, and as it says super white/clear, so I can't complain at the moment.

Which glue are you guys using, and how hard is it to get the excess off?
Im using tightbond 3 from the US but think the others are using epoxy. i love the tightbond easy to get off, but doesnt fill gaps at all.
Just heard the **** news.
Don't know exact details but Geoff has departed this earth yesterday. Died while doing what he loved - supping in Lombok.
Very very sad.... he seemed like a really good, helpful, generous sort of bloke

Very sad.
Makntracks, not sure about rails yet - haven't thought that far ahead. Had one quick read thru Geoff's instructions and decided I need a beer.
Now we are alone...... I feel pretty damn sad when I go down into my garage now - it's a weird feeling especially since I was only talking to him last week.
As for UV stability - no idea sorry. Is it a worry? I have a feeling there might be additives I can put in it if I glass over the external?
1Bonehead I'm just using the WS epoxy with a slow hardener and 403 filler as glue - it's amazing how strong it sticks the wood (the wood will snap before any joins do - a bit like good welding?)

Thanks for the advice guys its really appreciated. Just waiting for the Paulowina to turn up from Vic. Plans are printed and look huge when you roll them out. Going to do a solid Paulowina stringer with 2.5mm Model Aircraft Ply for the spars. The ME Ply is marine rated, light, flexible and strong. Next thing will be to borrow a mates thicknesser and table saw and mow all the old WRC cladding boards I have found down to 6mm x 45mm (Nails and staples have been carefully removed!). Sunny days have been a bit few and far between down here and make all the mess outside! The board I am making has a Vee in the last 2/3rds of the board so I am trying to work out how I can vee the gluing side accurately and still leave enough in the strip to sand the bottom shape, not sure I want to split the centre strip and bevel the edges.....should be interesting.
