I can categorically state that I have no affiliation to Simon or the Minion brand or with any company forward that matter so my personal narrative is not influenced by bias but I have to send a big kudos to Simon and company. For too long we have been subject to the big players in the market which has resulted in many a fan paying an arm and a leg some to see on of the smaller guys making inroads as well as changing the playing field is a positive sign. Let's keep supporting these guys who are there to offer that personalised experience which you just don't get firm the standard templates offered be the big boys. At the end of the day these boards have sold themselves.
I bet Colas right now you are saying "I told you so guys". And you would be right to feel smug.

Ozzie, I enjoy your narrative, but I want it to switch to one about YOURS soon!

I agree mate and I cant wait. Sufficed to say that over the weekend I sent a text message to Casso to initiate a contact. I really need to trial one as with my weight I am potentially looking to go under 7 foot. I am thinking 6'10 x 27 x 4. I could go narrower on that as well but lets wait and see. At 74kg one can afford to push it to the limit :)

I like the look of the Fang tail - it would be interesting to hear how they compare.

Yahoo. I'd be thinking give it a little more length and thin it out instead to about 3 1/2". There isn't much difference in performance between 610 and 7'2" but heaps in that 1/2" of thickness.

Not many as yet, although the board does feel good In what I have ridden so far. Still waiting to put it through its paces in some good waves if I can get some.

Hi Ghostman , good choice 6'10 x 27 x 4.Must be your favorite summer board 2015
Don't order thickness, order volume, these board are stable from square outline . Reducing flotation at a minimum allow to bury rail easier. So ask close to up 83 liters for your body weight 74kg+board weight 6 kg instead of ordering thickness.
You may have thinner rail as possible this way.

Some interesting contributions in terms of dimension. This has got me thinking. I gave thought to something following these numbers:
7'0 x 26.5 x 3 3/4.

Ultimately it has to be a board that can handle the very worst conditions sitting out back. I am guessing those figures would yield a board
around the 90 litre mark? If I take it to 7'2 then I would look at reducing the width to 26 inches.

The nature of this design lends itself to a friendly juxtaposition of thinner rails with reduced length it seems.

Cheers Ozzie

At 60 years old i would not stand up on choppy conditions on those dimensions...Will you do it , i bet yes
IMO, i do not expect stability from extra flotation, keep in mind that is the rectangular shape that make the board stable. And as you did understand this design make thinner rails.
Last point, while riding that kind i feel important to get my back foot on tail and front foot as close the nose as possible, like skateboarding. Too much length make you riding from the back of board and add inertia to your move.

Re: the fang v swallow tail.

I chose the swallow for pragmatic reasons - no sharp corners to break (clumsy) or hit me in the eye (accident prone). I have ridden both, but have not compared them enough to notice the difference. Overall they seem to perform similarly and it just comes down to personal preference. In the overall shape and design approach, I feel that this would be a marginal difference.

I haven't riden the swallow version so I can't compare. I do love the feel of the fang tail though - a bit like having a swallow tail on each side and using one at a time when you've got the board on rail.

Impromptu business trip to WA resulted in me missing out on the opportunity to see Casso last weekend to have a demo(Sorry mate for not getting back to you on this but ultra busy during this period)
but another trip beckons back to Perth so curious if there are any Minion riders on the West Coast who I can catch up with and have a ride.

Marcus thankyou for the kind gesture. Now that would be an awesome challenge. My initial impression was that the width or lack of it to be precise might be an issue but I would suggest it would be worth the effort.

At 76 litres I would be challenging Archimedes principle of flotation or at least pushing it to its extreme but then again this revolutionary design lends itself to pushing the boundaries. How practical this particular size is in relation to weight will be interesting.

Keep you posted. Another trip coming up very shortly.

@SUPMaori, how are you getting on with your Minion? I've only had mine out twice in beach breaks at Waipu Cove up north and then in reef breaks down in Taranaki. I'm still dialing it in but OMG it is so fast on a wave! I'll report back when I have had more time on it as only had three hours on it so far...

Yes indeed. Very prudent comment.

It appears it is time to sell the 2014 JP 8'2 x 28 PRO. If anyone is interested in purchasing this board at a reasonable price which is in great nick then please message me.

I can hear the MINION calling out to me :)

Stevo I've had mine out about half a dozen times. Like you still dialing in but man what a ride. Feel really comfortable on board now..as stable as my prowave but so much more speed and turn on the wave...loving it..lots of interest from guys in line up and on the beach..now want some quality summer waves.

I'm also finding the 7'4 Minion at 104L nearly as stable as the 8'5 Prowave at 109L but not too much difference. I'm now looking at the Prowave and reckon I need to sell it as the Minion will be my go-to board now! (Are you keeping your 9'3 Prowave or selling it? I might be after a 9'3 for the choppy/big days if you are selling it…)

Mate mine is the 8"10 prowave but I can see its going to be dry as a bone and decorating the wall. My minion is my go to board now..one break of mine is a good 1.5km paddle from beach around the coast which hasn't been working yet..ive still got to try the minion over that distance..otherwise may use my pro wave for that

I reckon in clean/glassy conditions a 1.5km paddle on the Minion will be OK. I was out at Ahu Ahu/Weld Rd in Taranaki and had the GPS watch track my paddle and it was 774m to get out to the outer reef which was pretty easy even being hung over as ****, second time out on it and a stiff x-shore breeze picking up. I think with the Minion you can use a faster cadence to good affect as the straight rails and planing hull help out with tracking.

Cheers Stevo..cool cadget alright. yea im going to try it anyway..its a good hard paddle at the best of times..but it will be so worth it to get the minion round the corner. Awesome when it breaks...super clean , charging and can easily get a few double overhead...Bring on Summer. We got a pulse coming in tonighht so aiming to get amongst it in the morning.

Hey, I have the Minion 7’4 x 27 ¾” x 4 1/4” volume 104 litres and was wondering at some point in the future if I could tweak these dimensions in a custom shape?

What would a Minion be like with thinner rails and to compensate with being slightly wider and longer?

Couple of ideas:

7’8 x 28” x 4” volume 110 litres

7’6 x 28” x 3.75” volume 105 litres

I'm around 80-85kg.

Interested to get some feedback from the chaps that have a Minion in terms of how they paddle in general conditions particularly over relatively long distances, say 500m-1km.

I would have thought that's Simons speciality. Those dims look good. Thinner and narrower is the go I reckon. The length difference when you're talking a few inches doesn't have anywhere near the performance implications as an inch of width or half an inch thickness.

I dOnt distance paddle mine but I rack up a good couple of km paddling back out when our reefs are breaking. The minion isn't quite as fast but the lack of tracking/yaw makes up for it as per Stevo comment n

Hi Tang,

Bit of topic but I am still making up my mind between a minion and a SB Airborne. I know you have both and got some experience under the belt on them.
Main aim is to maximize fun in slower waves, beach breaks and 1-2ft mush (and the odd head high beach break if we are lucky, but unlikely bigger). (75 kg intermediate)

would appreciate you take on these 2 from your experience.

Thanks
Rene
