Starboard has come out with their own foil sups now...
Its funny how they had to cobble this together and it definitely looks like its all been thrown together quickly to stop everyone looking at naish. The shorter boards being ridden in that video looks like hard work and that race board looks like it has its bum cut off and a section added to support the foil in a mad panic!
Anyone else notice that the foil section is blurred in the surfing bit of that photo. Like the foil is made out of a star-witness in a mob murder trial.
What a pack of douchebags... guys think they have split the atom or something...
First person to buy one please post a pic of it here...
Naish seem to be doing a better job of it. Kai's video makes it look like fun and the Naish product release looks like a real product.

I would be interested in knowing how the Malolo goes without the foil for all those no swell days.
Similarly, could you get the Malolo into a wave up on the foil then go surfing?
I wonder if you need a really ****ing long paddle?
On the SUP foil topic, please do not forget the true pionnier: Bruno André
His blog: tendance-innovation.blogspot.com/
His latest video, with the full ride and the eerie sound of the foil at speed:
I still don't see the point ? Isn't it about surfing the wave face
downwinders I get but foil surfing no Bueno
I watched the starboard video again, and really think it's not a good look! They seriously look to be struggling on those waves pumping. It looks like they said quick we need to film our number one guy on one and that was the first session?
And on the wave surfing with a foil, there is a video of Laird Hamilton riding a foil board and it's on big fat waves, that's where they will shine.
If I took one of those out to my local break I would be lynched, personally I thought the hypernut board was crap to begin with, I can see why Starboard might try whack a foil on it and try sell them for 5k +, my favourite part though is how no one can wear a leg rope with one in the faint hope of not killing yourself but more than likely slicing some poor unfortunate person in your vicinity in two.
Starboard must think we are all just bloody idiots by using someone else's equipment and shading it out.
I built my own short race board and foil set up and got it on some small waves last week, it felt almost the same as surfing the surface, going down the line and turning except it was silent and with far less resistance and much more glide. It will be perfect for surfing waves that are not currently surfed by any form of craft, I'm just hoping it doesn't catch on two quick and i have a few years of waves to myself!
All that hopping reminds me of this..
I was trying to remember what that thing was, cause like you, the fellas riding style reminded me of it.
I reckon Hobie will modify a mirage eclipse to have a foil with a mirage drive. We will have hordes of people scooting around the waterways at 15knts face planting into their board due to hitting submerged obstructions.....

Starboard is being fairly transparent in saying it is a GoFoil product that they are licensing. No doubt GoFoil has done the hard yards in R&D and if this thing works, I hope they have some well defined patents in place to stop the copycats and to ensure they receive their dues. The blurring in the video is to safeguard the design at least until it appears in shops.
The promise of foiling is the ability to ride unbroken waves. Imagine getting out on the ocean with a 2m swell running and catching a swell. You could surf without needing a bar or reef for the wave to break on. No shore break to battle through.
The height of the mast gets added to the "wave" height so the apparent wave size is much bigger.
It remains to be seen whether the current crop of SUP foils will deliver this. We seem to be in the second age of foils and this time around they're definitely here to stay for kiting (and probably windsurfing). Hopefully SUP foiling can take advantage of the rest of the foil developments that are happening.
Kais foil downwinding looks pretty graceful too and the Malolo board looks the right shape to control while foiling, the starboard looks too long and unbalanced
It's pretty obvious that Starboard is literally a chopped off All Star, hence the apparent lack of balance. They haven't even gone to the trouble of concealing that fact by throwing some colour matched spray paint over the cut. On one hand it's disappointing not to see the final shape, but on the other hand, I appreciate that they are not really attempting to mislead anyone with the wrong board. No doubt there will be more details to follow.
Do they come in a 10' version and can you nose ride them
The Naish is a 10'4". I'm tipping the Starboard will be about the same.
Doesn't the board become somewhat irrelevant with a foil?
If the board is too long the nose will dig in when you pitch the foil down. Too short and the board wont have the glide required to generate the speed on a runner.

For Surfing:-
No you need the paddle speed & stability to paddle onto a wave. I've been playing around with it and have a 8-6 and 8-2 Sups set up with foils. The 8-2 is definitely easier to raise to the foil but harder to catch the wave. So the board still plays a very important part. What's the ideal size and shape ? still working on that one

Not really it's more the leverage point on the Mast , too much in front just won't let the foil up , too much behind the foil will rise too high and cavitate and drop. It's a fine balance and the closer you get the Mast mounting point to the sweet spot the easier it is too ride and set the trim.

Actually, on non-breaking waves especially, a lot of the wave power happens under the surface.
So basically, with the foil, you surf in 3D the underwater waves.
I reckon it's awesome , for the days it suits. You don't take a knife to a gunfight
unless your chuck norris![]()
I'm sorry but i just don't get it!, maybe i need to try one and then ill get what all the fuss is about??? or maybe it will be another fading fad like the Slate type boards from last year???....Just seems a bit strange to me.....
