hello, all the way from Greece !

I just bought a 14,5 flip tail and I own the 9,5 pedestal and I was wondering if anyone has tried to put this set upside down?
I haven't seen anything online but since the insert of the fuselage is unidirectional I tried it on dry land and seems fine.

thanks

The flip tip tails can be used on both the long and short pedestals. The short ped is a flat mount so you put the flat side of the tail against it, and the long ped is a curved mount, so (you've guessed it) you put the curved part of the tail against it. Because the short ped is a top mount and the long ped is a bottom mount, in both cases the tail will end up with the tips facing up as it travels through the water.

Nice, Dommo! Is that the KD Maui 14.5" you were talking about? Is it completely flat? A buddy let me get a session in on his 190 last week and all I can say is--OMG! With a lot less effort, it had almost 1.5x the glide of my GL, stayed high on foil (at speed) and had faster turns--almost felt like I was cheating! Was looking for a bigger wave addition to my 180 so now just need to figure out whether it is this or to consider a smaller size. Will be interesting to hear your perspective when you get your 160 in the surf.

I have 2 KDmaui tails - For flat water pumping I use a 15" which is his speed/pump profile (fairly flat for the mid section with the wingtips just slightly curving down) - it gives a really direct feel when you pump, so you can actually feel the drive you get from it, and is super stable. It also has the best glide out of all the tails i've ever used. The other tail is 14.5" and is his surf profile - its fast and turns like you wouldn't believe - it allows you to go from rail to rail instantly. I use this tail for everything else - surf, wake foiling, wingdinging etc.
I've heard the NL190 is a really good allrounder so if you're after one then that's the one to get. I'm greedy so went for the 220 & 160 to extend the range of use. If you're only prone foiling then the 160 may be your best bet but like everything it depends on your skill level, your weight and the conditions you're in.

Impressions: 10 sessions in on the GoFoil NL190.

Glides well, Pumps well, Stays Down, Turns Hard!

I have surfed the NL190 in 4 to 12 foot faces. Speed feels impressive but I challenge anyone to SHOW ME THE DATA. So far the fastest runs have been 22 mph or 35 kmh. I am coming from a GL210 and GL140. I surfed all summer on the GL210 in 3 to 7 foot faces but have ridden the 210 up to 12+ foot faces. The GL 140 works in 5 to 15+ foot faces (with a 7' 4" board). The NL190 fits nicely between these 2 wings. I weigh 190 lbs or 86 kg.

Shimming the tail makes a BIG difference. NO shim (18" Wide Narrow tail) and the foil stays down. In bigger waves there is NO need to engage the wing as some suggested it just elegantly comes up. NOT with a kick just comes up nicely. In smaller waves adding a credit card spacer to the back of the tail increases pumping ability significantly.

What I like is that this wing will stay DOWN on big waves and then let you fly and connect once the energy fade. Nothing like video proof. Here was ~ Double Overhead SPICY take off followed by Easy Gliding on Northern California glass (that is a joke).

Gofoil NL quiver?
I'm around 85kg with wetsuit. Mainly Sup foil small reef break , learning to wing ding and considering prone and kite foil.

So the main difference between GL and NL in general is;
GL Lower speed glide, wont drop as fast, wider arc turns.
NL is faster, glides longer but requires more speed / pumping and turns better, drops at lower speeds than the GL.

So what size guide for a quiver?
GL 240 for low wind wing ding (maybe tiny Surf SUP)
NL 220 surf on SUP up to shoulder high waves
NL160 large surf SUP over shoulder high, high wind wing ding, prone surf, maybe kitefoil??

I think if your sup surfing and not downwinding the NL190 and 160 would cover you. Would mean you need not to be under powered on your wing ding but be fine otherwise IMO. Especially is you have a GL240 already

NLs are great foils for winging.

However, in the recent KOTC one of the competitors shredded his wing ding 3km offshore riding an NL190.NL wing tips are not very forgiving when they get near your wing canopy. Beware. It can happen in an instant even to the experienced.

I have punched a hole in a canopy with a foil without winglets too! Be interesting if winglets become standard on all foils in the future, that we will see what happens i guess but recent faster wings tend to have them so i can only assume they actually do make a difference.

Winglets -
takuma LOL and Kujira
Go Foil NL
(another brand can't mention yet!)
Dunno any other really fast production wings yet Hilly. No one in oz seems to downwind on the Armstrong's. New HA is small. (Don't say with a ding cos that's not downwinding with just a foil!)

Not much interest in DW foiling in Perth even though we have the best conditions wind wise. Strip weed kills the joy.
Down here there are too many waves about to bother with DW. That may change in summer if we get a really flat spell.

Hi Hairybear

I recently upgraded from GL to NLs. I'm 90kgs on a good day. My goto wing is now the NL160 with flat tail. It's better in every way: when winging, I can get it going in not THAT much more wind than my GL240. 20% more grunt required, maybe? I tried going back to GL 240, and it felt like I still had the handbrake on. Yuk. NL is by far superior. Even if it's 10-12 knots... the 160 is my preference.

The 160 is great for tow-in surf also. Perfect. And easy-as to pump, and I'm no professional. And I have also towed the Nl160 behind the jetski at 30 knots/50kph. It's stable at high speed.

I might get an NL220... but honestly not sure I need it.

160 rocks.

Anyone know the difference between a GL180 and a NL190 both with a 14.5 flip tip tail for prone foiling in waves flat to head high ?

I'm currently on the GL180 and loving it but just curious what the pros and cons of the NL190 might be, I'm 87kg.

Hi Mate,

I've recently swapped from the GL range to the NL range. 130 and 160. Had a 180/140.
Bigger speed range. More versatile and a higher average speed. Not as easy to pump, but once you work out how to it's just as good as the GL's I find.
Turns better and is more fun to chuck around than the GL's. Doesn't have the glide that the GL's had. Well comparing 180 to the 160.
Overall for your level and skills I would love to see you ripping on a NL.

Rich

The NL190 is basically a step up in performance compared to the GL180. It's faster, has less drag, and turns better/quicker, BUT, you have to keep its speed up as it has a higher stall speed and slightly less initial lift than the GL180. They both have amazing glide - the GL180 has a lower stall speed so it will glide at lower speeds than the NL, but as long as you can keep the NL's speed up it's glide is phenomenal. The same is true for pumping - you HAVE to keep the NL's speed up - if you don't it's not very forgiving of mistakes in pump technique (as soon as you slow down it takes a LOT of effort to keep going), but when you get it dialled in you can pump it for as long as your legs can hold out!!!!
I used the GL180 and the NL220 one after the other in waist to shoulder high surf (SUP foiling) and the difference was night and day - the NL was soooo much smoother, faster and turned way better.
When the waves are head high I'd take an NL over a GL every time - they are so much easier to control the lift and much easier to throw around.

Anyone familiar with a Axis wings for comparison? Haven't had a demo on Gofoil gear yet.
Is the NL stall speed a similar experience to Axis 900 or 1000. You have to keep them moving with lots of speed or they just drop. Harder to pump back out in small weak waves.
What are the comparible NL wings sizes?
Im guessing the Axis 1010 is more of GL 220 experience, continues to glide at really low speed?

Hey Mate, I haven't tried the NL's yet but the GL's are faster, have more glide and surf better than the AXIS 900 and 1010 I was on so the NL's would be on a whole other level again! The GOFOIL carbon mast is next level smooth and stable too.

Kooky question on the NL wingtips....has anyone taken some sandpaper to the ginsu trailing tip? How much would it affect performance if dulled just a little?

Team rider on south coast NSW ground them off.
I only have 1 1/4 of them left on my 160. Still goes perfect.
I know they look scary but I really don't know why people freak over them as much as they do. To hit them you would need to manage a acid drop onto them - beyond my skill level. For what it's worth I've always made more contact with the tail rather than the main foil.
They do love sail cloth though!

I am embarrassed to admit it ... but if there's a way to mess it up and hurt myself, I'll find it. Yesterday, walking out with a buddy, chatting, not paying much attention in the 3" waves by shore. My leash was wrapped around mast, so I let go to spin around -- the 3 incher hit at just the right time and swung the rig around at perfect eye level. Got a scratch/slice just in between my eyes, starting in my eye socket .... meaning I was roughly 1.5" from possibly cutting open my eye. HOLY CRAP! I don't know if you could repeat those logistics if you tried. Anyways, goes to show once again....you don't tend to get hurt when charging hard in challenging conditions. More likely when putting your board on the roof or simple cruising in nothing waves -- when in casual mode, that's when you chop your finger off in the shop or kitchen.

Tell us more! I have been threatening to do the same because I can't understanding whether they do anything. But obviously not enough to ruin an expensive wing. I tore up one of them on some rocks last week and almost went for it, but decided to repair with some epoxy and re-sand instead.

Knocked off a winglet today on nl160...that took about 6 sessions. That's why i shouldn't have pretty things!

First winging session on it in some pretty significant swell, I figure it happened getting tumbled in shore break.

Will ride it asynchronous for now, then decide....grind down the other or Jerry rig a new winglet
