I left him behind.

Had a bad effect on everyone on board.

They all hated me.

But such is life....I don't second guess my decision and I made the rules totally clear b4 anyone sets foot on board

Things are a little different out here.

Not so many lawyer's, rules and regulations.

No police. ..if **** gets serious they just send out the Marines

There is the problem and you should know better. They lie, they cheat and they steal.

Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

A crew is only what the captain makes it.

All the fault lies directly with me

You are right. We should not tar all of a group with the same brush just because a particular behaviour pattern is 99.999% prevalent in that group.

I just have not met the one in ten thousand of backpackers who is actually a straight up person who respects the customs of the place they are visiting and not a totally self centred git.

Um ..my opinion is that pot affects people differently. For me it doesn't work but for some people it does. They can function totally normal. They may have some idiosyncrasies but functional. If it were me i wouldnt want someone stoned or drunk on watch whilst underway and im asleep below but it depends on the person too. If it were a stranger then nup.

Cisco,

In defense of backpackers, I had a wonderful backpacker come with me. She was a 29 year old German girl who had never sailed before. I only met her the day she came on board but I liked her instantly. She got seasick but laughed about it, had a wave come over the cockpit which washed her dinner off her plate and her onto the cockpit floor, which threw her into fits of laughter. She brought food to contribute to the trip, and was eager to help and learn.

She is now back in Germany and keeps in touch. I'd have her back as crew any day.

Yeah I Have had a few backpackers through couch surfing , finda crew , and even just meeting people at the dock like my Canadian mate that stars in the utube video below.
Latvian lovely laura we traveled to Lizard island from Airlie beach,
Spanish and english couple in the video recently on my new yacht Dived on my hull / cooked food / cleaned my gally and got me two kilos of porterhouse steak fresh from the Coles bin!
Colombian dive instructor/girl friend hmmmm we won't talk about that one! Latvina hot blood!

I have worked with tourism now for 7 years and yes some can be painful but yes but without them this country would be worse of than it is right now.
i have met the grumpy old skippers on the Whitsunday boats and understand why they try to get the younger generation skippers on the boats!

Do I get this right, you dumped an unwanted crew member that you brought into French Polynesia onto Bora Bora without a return ticket out of the islands ?
If so then don't be too upset if the local authorities get somewhat upset when they discover .

I enjoyed dinner ( mahi mahi) with the "local authorities" as I always do ( I take his empty beer bottles back to tahiti for him each visit).

The x crew member will get out. But it will cost him $$$.

C.mon McNauta, no one really comes from the South Sandwich Islands, mainly coz no one wants to go there to begin with.
