Those Cobhams are seriously bulky and would be seriously expensive, but if we're going to be really serious about being safe when in the water they seem to be the goods. In fact they look so snug I think I'd be tempted to blow one up and drift around the bay on a nice day!![]()
There was a similar concept back in the 1800s, when ships were sinking at a horrific rate. A chap invented a rubber raincoat, that could also be used as a bed, a tent and most importantly, a one man liferaft.
It sounds ludicrous, but it was actually quite successful in the early days of Arctic exploration. And it played a part in starting the first high-performance sailing craft.

The lack of lifejackets were never an issue with this tragedy. What was needed here was to have the kill switch lanyard clipped on to the driver, which would have stopped the outboard instantly and both men would have been fine. A good reminder to me to clip mine on to myself
