Learn to sail in the smallest boat you can, and preferably a monohull.

Agree! Bit like learning how to ride a bike. Once you know how to ride, it does not matter how big the boat is.

Which leads to another saying, so not really advice (and I've said here before)
You start off with an empty bag of experience and a bag full of luck. The trick is to fill the bag full of the experience before you empty the bag of all the luck.
