Nice stuff was wondering where you'd got to Dex, bring on the videos!

Thank mate, yeah been offline a fair bit the past few months, long gaps between phone towers out there. I've been filming along the way though and will start dropping videos in december.

Heres a bunch of photos of my "new" boat, all taken in the last few months. Its a Jon Sayer designed and built 37ft, splashed in 2005. She's taken me from Brisbane, up through the Solomons, out to Ontong Java, round the top of PNG and now cruising Raja Ampat. I've loved every day on her so far, she sails like a dream.

Have you ever had problems with the bulb on the keel collecting kelp etc?

Hi Ramona. Cant say I've had any issues yet. haven't see any kelp up this way though, or cray pots for that matter. Ran up on an unmarked reef yesterday though and she just sat on the bulb nicely until i could figure out how to get her off again. No damage done to the boat, pride a little dented. Apparently it was designed that the boat would balance perfectly on the bulb

Great photos, thanks Dex. I was wondering last week where you were. Hey what's the story with that photo of you and the squall in the background, it looks fierce?

Not such a good shot, but here is Akoya this morning. Might get a chance to take her down to Sydney next week if the westerlies blow themselves out and should get some more scenic pics then.

Hi Dex,
good on you mate, living the dream. One day I'd like to take the plunge and head my 37 out on a tour. Those photo's are awesome, what kind of drone are you using, I'd like to take some picks like that! Love the weather shot.
cheers Richard

Thanks mate, seems like a dream sometimes, then a squall hits. ??
its actually not that much of a plunge, most of the fears and worries I had were completely unfounded.
I use a Dji Mavic pro2, great little machine. Easy to hand launch and catch while the boat is moving. I take these shots while sailing solo.

The next few years will be spent weekend sailing / holiday trips up and down the coast ,learning the boat , then we will retire and live aboard ,we will circle Aus for a few years , see how that goes , then on from there who knows

Yeah she is a little bigger than I originally was after but the value /quality was too good to pass up , I m fine with systems and handling her in close , its just the sailing part is a learning curve , luckily we ave some very experienced friends and youtube haha

Hi Stockie

She is an Ericson Independence 31. Bruce King designed her in the 1970s. She has a fin and skeg, but looks like a much older boat above the water. Very happy withe her so far.
Bruce King has gone on to design some spectacular boats and certainly has an eye for good boat booty

Don't like your chances of getting to Sydney this week. You might have to sit a watch sailing on YouTube. If it keeps raining like this you will soon be able anchor the boat in your front yard.

G'day tomooh, nice looking
cat. I'm a big fan of Wharam boats, I like the philosophy behind them.
I've never sailed one, how do they compare with sailing other boats of a similar size?

Hi like any boat it all depends on rig sails a clean hull with not too much junk on board. They are no race boat but mine would perhaps be a little faster than an average cruising 38 mono and sails pretty well upwind too. It has a pretty standard multi hull rig and full batten main and tacks easily and nicely balanced too. Wharrams may have a reputation for not sailing well but I have had 3 of them and have been surprised at how well they went. They are generally a lot lighter and more easy driven than a similar size production cat with way less wind age. Cheaper simpler and less room inside. Mine is for sale 78knz on trademe. Downwind i have peaked at 15 on a wave but generally 8 knots is common. There is some video on YouTube under MrTomooh it you are interested.
