Ok, I'm no legal expert but as soon as the thread became a possible "missing person at sea" situation it became more than just playing a few people, don't you think? Sounds like you are downplaying the whole episode. At that point I am assuming by law the hoaxer is mandated to let the relevant rescue agencies know that a rescue is not needed, or at the very least email or pm a forum participant in the thread to notify that a rescue was not needed. Given the fact that they where getting their jollies from taking prople for a ride thy would have known what was going on. The forum Admin at the very least should post updates on this thread....this statement is not enough..........

The poster did say to McNaughtical they were no longer using this and now communicating with NZ.

I'm relatively new here and get the feeling there is more "in-house long term member" dynamics going on here that I don't have a clue about. Maybe the culprit should hire you as his defence lawyer? Sorry if I sound frustrated....... While I thought it was a possibility someone was in real trouble I went in to bat for them, now we know it was a hoax..!! then I say F#$% the hoaxer who F'd with peoples genuine support interest, care and concern not to mention sending the notified authorities into hours of work that could have been avoided by a timely notification from said F whit!! So in my humble opinion they deserve a whoping reality check....... and the sooner the better!

I thought the answer would be obvious in that NZ SAR would try and establish the legitimacy and identity of the vessel before searching.
I realize Admin is low key etc, but I think we have a right to know,..... Maybe a freedom of info application will do the trick.

I don't think any body has forgotten Eero. And maybe that tragedy played on a few peoples minds. You certainly can't fault them for that.
But is a water sport forum the correct place to hinge a rescue response on?? I would certainly not think so. But that is not to say that leaving passage plan details with an ETA with someone on here is an irresponsible thing to do. Rather I thing the opposite. That is only an answer in my opinion the individual can answer and in Yarra's case, it seems so and that is his prerogative.

If Yara (in this direct case) said nothing but it turned out to be something, how would he cope/deal with that? I am glad that there are people in this world like him. When I am hopefully cruising next year, I hope people take more than a passing interest. But in defence to this site; I was not prepared to give you (regardless of the situation) a direct number. I was in contact with the site owner at the time and informed him of your request. It was at that time already largely determined that LJ to be a hoax, but not 100%, and an effort was made to get in touch. Unfortunately we lead lives outside of here. For me, immediately after my response to you I had to leave for work. As an airline pilot, I am uncontactable for many, many hours. And do not feel for one minute that this did not play on my mind the entire time. So please do not judge the credibility of this site based on slow/incomplete information.
For the big question and answer. I doubt anybody here knows who the idiot the Mods believe is behind this. I can definitely confirm it is not a regular or even a semi regular contributor. And the suspect came and went in his original form just as quickly as LJ did. Please realise that this can't be 100% confirmed. But the suspect has not logged on since LJ's sign up date (but later then Southaces 60 days of the member he suspects). So I don't think a "name and shame" will serve any purpose.
I agree with Southace on many many of his opinions on this thread, from the inappropriateness of a 'watch' on this forum, to the beheading of the fool on this forum, to the appropriateness of a 'watch' on this forum. But if you are going to use it as a tool for SAR, than own it. Remember what you have said and advised and do the decent and considerate thing, and follow through. But also remember that neither this site or it participant in NO WAY are responsible of holding a SARWATCH for you.
As for the call for this thread to be closed and deleted... My opinion is for it to not be.. Closed possibly (but I don't feel there are any 'Trolls' here and the suspected fool certainly isn't). But deleted... I think it should stay until it runs its course for us all to learn the trouble that can be caused for what turned out to be nothing more than ****s and giggles.

My mind constantly swung from believer to doubter, again I spent hours searching the net trying to find anything I could to identify the person or the boat. By the way, there are quite a few "Lady Jane" boats out there, from super yachts to dinghys, one little Dragon class Lady Jane in France does quite well it appears, skipper is an Olympian, I even checked out his 300+ Facebook friends to try and find a Jane, and form a link in a chain. I couldn't find anything that linked this story with a fact that could be passed on.
I may have wasted a bit of time, but I'm glad I at least tried to help solve the puzzle, even in my own mind. Well done Yara, McNautical, Toph and others who actually made an effort to do something, to alert, seek further or disprove what was happening. Sure beats a smug "knew it all along" type.

That person who ever they were never asked for any emergence assistance other than where to do repairs in Australia, scam or no scam .
And as they stated they had a sate-phone and would have been quiet capable of contacting some one for assistance them selves.

I felt all was in hand.
It was nothing like Eeros situation to me. A forum to me is not the place to call for emergencies
Why I asked about Eeros where about's in sea breeze was because Eero and my self usually chatted on face book regularly and I had not heard for him for a week .I then found a post on his face book page and my concern lessened but it was a bogus post which I didn't realise could happen but it can on face book.
I tried you ring him on his mobile many times with out success that's when I posted on here. As Eero had suggested he might sail down to the sea breeze get together down Brisbane.
Just before he disappeared he sent me a water flow meter sensor its sits next to my PC, but will fit it soon to the engine as a remembrance to him so every time I open the engine sea cock Ill see it. He was a good soul

Jane died of cerebral cancer in 1992 without achieving her dream, sailing solo to Australia. I wanted to write that dream with real material from real sailors from Australia to make it real as a tribute to her, to ease the pain. I have achieved nothing, just made it worst. I have deceived the members of this forum beyond any reasonable level and I shall pay the price for many years to come. I am not asking for your forgiveness, I deserve every comments posted. You have done the right thing Yara by calling NZ, I would have done the same. I am so sorry to have disrupted such a fantastic community. I shall never post again.
