My backup is the Yanmar 2GM engine. Even though it sounds like he has serviced it well, I feel I should have it serviced. Do you agree?
A service is usually, an oil change., a filter change and a listen to see if the tappets are noisy.
And of course writing out the bill.
If the oil change and filter change are recent, that's enough.

Check the belts for wear and alignment and carry spare belts
Carry a spare sea water pump impeller.
If you don't know when the impeller was last changed, you can change it and keep the old one as a spare.
This will give you practice at the job in benign conditions.

You will be sloshing around, so draining the fuel into borrowed tanks or containers and checking the bottom of the tank(s) for gunk would be a good idea.
If you are going to have any trouble with the engine I suspect that is what it will be.
When you run the engine, run it fast. Don't fart around trying to save fuel or not load the engine.
It's a diesel and it was made to work..

Here is a bit of single handed sailing with running backstays. As you will see Kevin doesn't tack often.
That is usually the case on a longer off shore passage.

Fair wind and kind seas.

gary

Thanks for putting that up.
Very interesting.

Delphis looked a bit rough about a year ago. You can single hand a half with runners but it's a pain. Even with a reef in they may not clear the boom. Should be about 2-3% quicker than an S8O.

That puts it in perspective. I am glad I didn't proceed.

The owner had a different understanding of 'extremely fast'.

Any comments you have about the Cord 32 would be appreciated.

I know it was built by Syd Fisher from a Petersen 30 hull mould with a Traditional 30 cabin. A raked transom was added.

It raced in Div 1 of the Parramatta Sailing Club

against an Etchell 22, a Adams 10.6, a Adams 10, a Pacific 36, a X-yacht, a Farr1104 and a Ross 930

I am looking for a racing cruiser.

I used to see the Cord racing past when I was on my own mooring. I sailed one once when they were new. The problem is that not many of them were built (I suspect Syd built some boats for tax reasons rather than as a normal business) and none of them ever really raced hard of seem to have been rated. At a guess I'd say a touch quicker than Delphis; none of those medium displacement boats are super quick and the differences between many of them are less than the difference in crew and gear quality.

Typically, for example, a boat that is 1 foot longer will be about 1% faster than a boat thT is basically identical but 1 foot shorter and with beam, sail area etc reduced in proportion. Inside a yacht class, a boat 3-4 years newer was often only 1% quicker. A better crew makes much more difference than that so unless all the boats are unusually well sailed the finer points don't really matter in the end

You'd have to factor in the cost of a rig upgrade; unlikely to get racing insurance with a rig of that age.

Beautiful boat,,, I reckon the VDS got the internal design spot on with the 34s. Seen in a few of them and basically they're same layout.

This is actually the first yacht I looked at buying in 1991 when it was for sale at $95,000.

The VDS 34 was specifically designed for metal construction using the frameless fairing method and in steel were the lightest design around.

Dehler used the design for their 34 at the time. I believe the VDS 34 is a classic.

Very nice Swanson 32 at Batemans Bay has just had a price drop! This might be of interest to Canberra people, boat and mooring package. Not sure how he seized the engine. The Bukh ran like a Swiss watch when I checked it for the owner before he left here! I suspect he forgot the seacock.

I'm quoting myself again! Just appeared on eBay and this is going to be a real gift. This is on a brand new mooring in Batemans Bay. The engine is seized apparently, I don't know the full story but I suspect something silly has occurred.
