! Every cruising boat with oven should have a bulk supply of Fray Bentos steak and kidney pies in there hold perfect with green canned beans and mash potatoes! Sent my last crew out to get supplies and she told me she had never heard of them and came back empty handed! What else is good?

Looks good southace and is a lot like what I had for dinner tonight except I got mine at the Tatts Hotel.

Do those Fray Bentos pies need to be stored frozen or refrigerated? Never seen them before. Who sells them?

At 425 gram with mashed potatoes, peas, carrots and a bit of gravy it is a great meal for two.

P.S. :- Even though Second Wind is just a little old 30 footer, she has a fine Kiwi built Mariner gas stove with a full sized oven so roast dinners can be cooked below with no need for a hooded BBQ up top.

Gee cisco they been round since I was a kid! Woolies,Coles, foodland should sell them....maybe a south Aussie product but do recall buying them in qld. No it's can food as long as you have a operational can opener you can have hearty pie with puff pastry! Great with green caned garden peas !

I sorta remember a canned pie we had around some shearing camps but they didn't look as inviting as the fray bentos ! Maybe in Adelaide with a few cans of peas you could have a pie floater ! Can of Stagg chili beans with some of that packet Canalone is ok, if your over fish ! Or can't catch em. Will keep me eye out for fray bentos

Yeah, l googled it and Coles selling it for 7.76.
I'll try it next time thou it is not a weight watchers dinner.
If one dwelled on it regularly one would go not just old but fat too.
On a second thought, if one had the canned peas with it and the Deb's mash, it might have enough preservative in it to keep us forever.

Cheers!

If you spin it around just right in the oven you can perfect it. If you leave to long the puff will keep puffin!

So is it going to become a puffin pie?

Still, would need a couple of banyan days to balance the calories.

Have any of you actually eaten a Fray Bentos pie? It will make mutton bird look good, believe me.

Find a butcher that does real traditional cold smoked bacon. Adds great flavor to pasta, even canned beans etc. Just hang it in a muslin cloth it will keep for months, even if a bit a mold grows just wash with saltwater/vinegar dry it and it will be fine.

Those Fray Bentos are excellent and keep forever without a fridge. The empty cans are handy around the workshop for putting small parts in and soaking stuff.

Here's a small selection from the on board stores at Fame Cove this morning.

The heat stable gnocchi are very good. Drop in boiling water for 2mins, drain, add a splash of olive oil, packet parmesan and munch.

Now, spam fritters .........!

Cheers

This all reminds of the line in Henry Lawson's poem about Queensland Railways.
"Iron rations come in handy,
On the way to Dirrumbandi."

I ate tinned pies on a passage many years ago on an English yacht. They were yummy. Good to see they can be bought in Aus.

We had Spam fritters too but they were just to have a change from having fresh caught dorado every day.

Aboard we eat pizzas. Make the bases from yoghurt and flour. Gnocchi bakes. Freshly made hummous in wraps with salad.
Cooking is really important to us at home and aboard. As a very last resort id be eating muesli, rice. Hummous wraps, as all that stuff keeps forever.
I hope to forage and keep us in fish

Ah well, l succumbed to pressure...

and went to Coles and could not find it, until a nice attendant led me to it hidden behind a concrete pylon, it was!
Saveth! Fray Bento's pie was smiling at me.
Peas and carrots plus Deb's mash on the top of pepper stake gravy - once l am on the spending spree, l am spending big - fell into the basket with a few bottles of Chardonnay at the bottle shop.

The suspense is killing me, but the Chardonnay is open and l lost my drive to cook tonight after fighting a filthy footed mongrel of a shipwright this arvo.
Tonight, Chardonnay and twisties, no more.
I owe you the report on Fray Bentos, yet.

What is the best way to turn that pie in the owen, Southace?

Hummous is made from chick peas, lemon juice garlic and olive oil and tahini.
Wraps ar long lasting flatbreads. Make it interesting you can cook some lamb on the bbq add it to the hummous wrap. Tomatoes, dome kinda hot sauce. Yummy. Healthy and a fresh taste.
Have to admit i bloody love pies. Too much. Ill stock some of those as well.??

Classic! I was about to explain the method of care to get the puff pastrie perfect! I just spin mine as the back of my smev oven seems hotter than the front. Pulled it out a bit early and realised it need a bit more time. Also good it you turn the oven off and leave it be for 10. But I have had some where the puff has risen like 2 inches but still was eatable! Enjoy

Haha ! How much did Coles have them for I think I paid 7 bucks at foodland last time. Unfortantly they don't budge on price much and the price keeps going up up up instead of down down down at Coles. Don't tell anyone or they may sell out!

Classic ! I know the feeling I got lamb cutlets and gravey with mash to do but that's on delay ! The pie could save the night wish I had one now in my stores! I re-read your early post see Coles selling them for 7 bucks.
i find heat and eat in ovens are better than frying stuff smoking out cabins. I do most steaks chickens lamb beef in oven now days when it's cold to use the outdoor BBQ. Butane stoves are good for a fry in cockpit I just find frying smokes out the cabins.

If I had a bigger boat and an oven and was on along trip. I would definately be making proper fermented sourdough bread. So easy to make and you only need flour, water, salt and a starter.
